Chapter 14: The Woman Who Took Back Her Power

Richard Voss invited me to dinner.

Not a meeting.

Not a negotiation.

Dinner.

That was how men like him operated.

They wanted everything to feel casual.

Friendly.

Civilized.

Even when they were destroying lives.

The restaurant was private.

Expensive.

Almost empty.

Richard sat across from me with the confidence of a man who believed the ending had already been written.

"Emma.""

I smiled politely.

"Richard.""

He studied me.

"You look different.""

"I am different.""

He smiled.

"Your family is falling apart.""

I said nothing.

Because that was exactly what he wanted.

Emotion.

Fear.

Desperation.

"I heard Marcus is struggling.""

I lifted my glass.

"Families disagree.""

"Not yours.""

His smile grew.

"Your family has always been perfect.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

That surprised him.

"My family has always been honest.""

A small pause.

"That’s why we survive.""

Richard leaned back.

"You still believe honesty wins?""

"Yes.""

He laughed.

"You sound like your father.""

"That's a compliment.""

His expression hardened.

Good.

I wanted him irritated.

I wanted him confident.

Because arrogance created mistakes.

"You know," Richard said, "I never wanted your family destroyed.""

I almost laughed.

"You wanted everything they built.""

"I wanted what I deserved.""

"Nobody deserves stolen things.""

He ignored that.

"Your father was old-fashioned.""

"My father was honorable.""

"Your father was weak.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He looked confused.

"Why do men like you always call kindness weakness?""

Silence.

Then I continued.

"Because you don't understand it.""

For the first time, his confidence cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I placed a folder on the table.

Richard looked at it.

"What is this?""

"An offer.""

He opened it.

Inside were documents showing the Hale Foundation was preparing to dissolve.

His eyes moved quickly.

Then he smiled.

"You finally understand.""

I pretended to hesitate.

"Maybe.""

He closed the folder.

"You want protection.""

"No.""

I looked directly at him.

"I want control.""

He smiled.

There it was.

The moment he believed he had won.

"What are you offering?""

"The foundation records.""

His expression changed.

"What?""

"The archive you have been searching for.""

A slow smile appeared.

"You found it.""

I looked away.

"Yes.""

Richard leaned closer.

"And?""

"I want a deal.""

He laughed.

"Emma, you have no idea how valuable that is.""

"I do.""

"Then you know you cannot negotiate with me.""

I smiled.

"That's where you're wrong.""

He studied me.

"Why?""

"Because I know something you don't.""

His eyes narrowed.

"What?""

I looked toward the hidden camera in the restaurant.

Then back at him.

"I know exactly who you are.""

For one second, confusion crossed his face.

Then understanding.

His expression changed.

"You recorded this.""

The smile disappeared.

"You thought I was desperate.""

I stood.

"But I was waiting.""

Richard immediately stood.

"You made a mistake.""

"No.""

I smiled.

"You did.""

Outside the restaurant, Marcus, Julian, and Caleb waited.

Along with federal investigators.

Because while Richard believed he was negotiating...

He had just confessed.

Every word.

Every admission.

Every detail.

The man who controlled everyone else had finally controlled himself into a trap.

As he walked out, surrounded by officers, he looked at me.

"This isn't over.""

I believed him.

Because men like Richard never accepted defeat easily.

But this time, he had lost something more important than money.

Control.

Three weeks later, the trial began.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Financial crimes.

Manipulation.

Bribery.

Conspiracy.

Richard Voss finally faced the consequences of the empire he built.

But there was still one person missing.

Adrian.

He had disappeared before the investigation became public.

Some thought he ran.

Some thought he made another deal.

I didn't know.

Until the day I received a letter.

No return address.

Just my name.

Inside was a handwritten note.

*Emma,*

*I know I don't deserve forgiveness.*

*Maybe I never will.*

*But I need you to know something.*

*When Richard loses everything, the evidence against him will only be complete because of one final piece.*

*I have it.*

I read the sentence twice.

Then the next one.

*I am coming back.*

May you like

And at the bottom:

*This time, I will tell the truth.*
