Chapter 5: The Files My Father Left Behind

My father had been dead for seven years.

Seven years since the heart attack that took him away from us.

Seven years since our family changed forever.

And now Adrian had connected his name to the biggest threat in my life.

I spent the entire afternoon searching through old memories.

Trying to find something I had missed.

Something my father knew.

Something my brothers knew.

Something everyone had hidden from me.

That evening, Marcus finally admitted the truth.

"There were files.""

I stared at him.

"What files?""

He sighed.

"When Dad died, he left behind information about several business dealings.""

"Business dealings involving Richard Voss?""

Marcus nodded.

"Yes.""

I felt anger rising.

"You all knew?""

"We knew there was danger.""

"But you didn't tell me.""

Marcus looked down.

"Because Dad made us promise.""

I stood.

"My father made you promise to lie to me?""

"No.""

Marcus shook his head.

"He made us promise to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I walked toward the window.

"But nobody asks what I wanted.""

Silence filled the room.

Because I was right.

Protection without trust could become another kind of prison.

Julian opened a drawer and removed a small black folder.

"We found this after the gala.""

I looked at it.

"What is it?""

"Something hidden in Dad’s private office.""

My fingers touched the folder.

I hesitated.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure I wanted answers.

Sometimes secrets protected people.

Sometimes secrets destroyed them.

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Old contracts.

Handwritten notes.

Photographs.

And one letter.

My name was written on the front.

My heart stopped.

"Emma.""

My father’s handwriting.

I hadn’t seen it in years.

I opened the letter carefully.

*My beautiful daughter,*

*If you are reading this, something has happened that forced you to discover the truth before I wanted you to.*

My hands began shaking.

*I spent my life building a family legacy based on honesty. But I learned something too late. Not everyone who smiles at you is your friend.*

I continued reading.

**There is a man named Richard Voss. He will appear charming. Generous.

Helpful. Do not believe him.**

I looked at my brothers.

The room felt smaller.

*He does not want money. Money is only a tool. He wants control.*

I turned the page.

The final sentence made my blood freeze.

*And if my daughter ever marries a man connected to him, I fear she has been placed exactly where he wants her.*

I dropped the letter.

No one spoke.

Because we all understood.

Adrian was not random.

My marriage was not random.

The person I thought I chose...

May have been chosen for me.

"No," I whispered.

Julian looked at me.

"Emma.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I loved him.""

Marcus approached slowly.

"Emma...""

"I loved him.""

The repetition sounded like I was trying to convince myself.

Because if Adrian had been part of Richard Voss’s plan from the beginning...

Then my entire marriage was built on a lie.

The next document changed everything.

A photograph.

Young Adrian.

Standing beside Richard Voss.

The date was twenty years ago.

Before I met him.

Before our wedding.

Before he claimed to have built his own company.

On the back of the photo was one sentence.

*The investment was successful. The next step is marriage.*

My breathing stopped.

Marriage.

Not business.

Marriage.

I looked at my brothers.

"No.""

Caleb immediately understood.

"Emma...""

"Someone planned this.""

Nobody denied it.

The truth was finally visible.

Adrian didn’t just betray me.

He may have been placed in my life.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man’s voice responded.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

"Emma Hale.""

I froze.

"Who is this?""

A soft laugh.

"You finally found your father’s files.""

My blood went cold.

"Richard Voss.""

"Very good.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What do you want?""

"I want what your father refused to give me.""

"And what is that?""

A pause.

Then:

"Everything.""

The call ended.

May you like

And my brothers immediately moved.

Because the war had officially begun.
