Chapter 10: The Accident That Wasn’t an Accident
The message stayed on my screen for less than ten seconds before Marcus grabbed my phone.
His eyes moved across the words.
*Ask about the accident.*
For the first time since I had known him, I saw fear on my brother’s face.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Fear.
"What accident?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
That silence was worse than any confession.
I looked at Marcus.
"Tell me.""
He placed my phone on the table.
"Emma...""
"No.""
My voice was sharper than I intended.
"No more secrets.""
The room became still.
For years, everyone around me had decided what truths I deserved.
My father.
My brothers.
Adrian.
Richard.
Everyone had made choices for me.
Everyone except me.
"I lost my husband because I didn't know the truth.""
I looked at Marcus.
"I almost lost my life because I didn't know the truth.""
My voice trembled.
"So tell me everything.""
Marcus sat down slowly.
Caleb looked away.
Julian crossed his arms.
They all knew.
They had all carried this secret.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
"The night Dad died...""
He stopped.
His voice became quieter.
"It wasn't supposed to happen.""
My heart tightened.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus looked at the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.
"Our father was investigating Richard Voss.""
I already knew that part.
"What I didn't know was how close he was to exposing him.""
Julian nodded.
"Dad had evidence.""
"Evidence of what?""
Marcus looked at me.
"That Richard wasn't just manipulating companies.""
A pause.
"He was bribing officials.""
The room felt colder.
"And Daniel?""
Marcus nodded.
"Daniel knew.""
My stomach dropped.
My father's closest friend.
The man who attended family dinners.
The man who gave speeches at my father's funeral.
The man who hugged me and told me everything would be okay.
He knew.
"He betrayed him.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Yes.""
I walked toward the window.
Trying to process everything.
"My father trusted him.""
"Too much," Marcus said.
The words hurt.
Because my father was careful.
Smart.
Experienced.
And yet someone close to him had fooled him.
Just like Adrian fooled me.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
Was that our family’s weakness?
Not power.
Not money.
Trust.
We trusted people.
And people used that against us.
"How did the accident happen?""
Marcus took a deep breath.
"Dad was driving home from a meeting.""
"With Richard?""
"No.""
He looked at the folder.
"With Daniel.""
I froze.
"What?""
"The last person Dad saw before the crash was Daniel.""
Silence.
"And Daniel survived.""
The room went quiet.
Of course he did.
The person closest to the truth walked away.
My father didn't.
"Why didn't you investigate him?""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"We did.""
"And?""
"We couldn't prove anything.""
Julian added:
"Daniel had an alibi. He claimed Dad lost control of the vehicle.""
I looked at the documents.
"Did you believe him?""
Marcus didn't answer.
That was enough.
"No.""
He shook his head.
"I never believed it.""
I turned.
"Then why?""
"Because without evidence, suspicion means nothing.""
That was Marcus.
The judge.
The man who believed facts mattered more than feelings.
But I wasn't thinking like a judge.
I was thinking like a daughter.
"My father died.""
My voice cracked.
"And everyone just moved on.""
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
Seven years.
Seven years of grief.
Seven years of believing it was a tragedy.
Now it felt like a crime.
My phone buzzed again.
A new message.
This time, a file.
Julian opened it.
A video.
The timestamp showed the night of my father's death.
We watched.
A security camera recording.
A gas station near the highway.
My father's car passed.
Then another vehicle.
A black SUV.
Caleb leaned closer.
"Pause.""
Julian stopped the video.
"Enhance.""
The image became clearer.
The SUV's license plate appeared.
Nobody moved.
Because we recognized it.
Marcus whispered:
"Daniel's car.""
The room went silent.
Finally.
Evidence.
Not suspicion.
Not theory.
Proof.
Then another detail appeared.
The SUV wasn't following my father.
It was leading him.
I felt sick.
"He wasn't chasing Dad.""
Julian looked at me.
"What?""
"He was guiding him.""
Everyone understood.
The crash wasn't random.
It was planned.
My father wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He had been taken there.
Marcus stood.
"We need to find Daniel.""
But before he could move, the front door opened.
A voice came from the hallway.
"You don't need to.""
Everyone froze.
Daniel Cross stepped inside.
Older than I remembered.
But still carrying the same calm smile.
The same smile from my father's funeral.
The same smile from every family gathering.
The smile of a man who had been welcomed into our home.
"I was wondering when you would finally discover the truth.""
Caleb immediately moved forward.
But Marcus stopped him.
"Daniel.""
Daniel looked at all of us.
Then his eyes landed on me.
"Emma.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
He sighed.
"Because your father made a mistake.""
My hands clenched.
"He trusted you.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"And that was his mistake.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Marcus stepped forward.
"You killed him.""
Daniel smiled sadly.
"No.""
A pause.
"I made sure he couldn't stop what was coming.""
My blood ran cold.
"What was coming?""
Daniel looked at me.
"The takeover.""
The room became silent.
"The destruction of the Hale family.""
He smiled.
"And the final step was Adrian.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"No.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
May you like
And then he said the one thing that destroyed the last piece of hope I had.
"Emma, your marriage was the final move in a plan your father died trying to stop.""
