Chapter 6: The Man Who Bought My Husband

Richard Voss made one mistake.

He thought fear worked on me.

Maybe it worked on other people.

Maybe it worked on Adrian.

Maybe it worked on everyone who built their lives around protecting their reputation.

But he didn’t know me.

He didn’t know the little girl who watched her father fight against powerful men.

He didn’t know the teenager who learned never to surrender because someone demanded it.

And he definitely didn’t know the woman who survived eight years with Adrian Whitmore.

Fear had already lived in my house.

It wore my husband’s face.

Richard Voss was just another man trying to wear the same mask.

The following morning, my brothers and I met with a private investigation team.

Not because we needed help.

Because we needed proof.

Power was useful.

But evidence was unstoppable.

Julian placed several documents on the table.

"We discovered unusual transfers between Richard Voss’s companies and Adrian’s accounts.""

Marcus studied the papers.

"Enough for suspicion.""

"Not enough for conviction," Caleb said.

I looked at them.

"What about Vanessa?""

Everyone became quiet.

Because Vanessa was still missing.

After the gala, she disappeared.

No interviews.

No statements.

No social media.

Nothing.

That was unlike her.

Julian checked his phone.

"Actually...""

He looked concerned.

"We found her.""

"Where?""

"In a private clinic.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"Why?""

Julian hesitated.

"Because someone attacked her.""

The room went silent.

"Attacked?""

Caleb nodded.

"She claims she knows something about Richard Voss.""

I immediately stood.

"Take me there.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Emma.""

"I need answers.""

And I did.

Because for the first time, Vanessa wasn’t the enemy.

She was a witness.

The clinic was quiet.

Too quiet.

Vanessa looked nothing like the woman from the gala.

The perfect makeup was gone.

The confidence disappeared.

She looked afraid.

When she saw me, guilt crossed her face.

"Emma.""

I stopped.

I expected anger.

I expected hatred.

Instead, I saw fear.

"What happened?""

She looked away.

"After the gala, someone followed me.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Richard Voss?""

Her eyes snapped toward me.

That was enough.

"You know him.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Adrian introduced us.""

My heart sank.

"Of course he did.""

She closed her eyes.

"I thought Adrian loved me.""

I almost laughed.

But I didn’t.

Because pain recognized pain.

"When did you meet Richard?""

"Months before you found out.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"He told me Adrian was unhappy.""

Of course.

The same story Adrian told everyone.

The same lie.

"He said you were holding him back.""

I looked away.

Because those words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because I had spent years hearing versions of them.

Vanessa continued.

"Richard wanted me close to Adrian.""

"Why?""

She whispered:

"To control him.""

The room went silent.

I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t Adrian’s escape.

She was part of the plan.

A distraction.

A weapon.

A way to weaken the marriage.

"Adrian knew?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

For the first time, she looked honest.

"He thought he was using me.""

A bitter smile appeared.

"But Richard was using him.""

That was Adrian’s tragedy.

He spent his life manipulating people.

Then met someone better at it.

I stood.

"Where is Adrian now?""

Vanessa looked nervous.

"Emma...""

"Where?""

She gave me an address.

A private office downtown.

When I arrived, Adrian was not alone.

Richard Voss was there.

Older than I imagined.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

A calm smile.

The kind of smile that never reached his eyes.

He looked at me like he had been waiting.

"Emma Hale.""

I stared at him.

"You ruined my family.""

He smiled.

"No.""

He walked closer.

"Your family ruined itself.""

I hated how calm he was.

"You used my husband.""

"I improved him.""

"You destroyed him.""

Richard laughed softly.

"Adrian was already broken.""

That sentence angered me more than anything.

Because part of me knew it was true.

Richard looked at me.

"Your father was stubborn.""

"My father was honorable.""

"Your father was naive.""

I stepped forward.

"And you underestimated him.""

Richard smiled.

"Just like I underestimated you.""

That was the first honest thing he said.

"You were supposed to be a quiet wife.""

My blood ran cold.

"Supposed to?""

He smiled.

"Adrian followed instructions perfectly.""

I stared at him.

"What instructions?""

Richard leaned closer.

"Marry you.""

The room seemed to stop.

Even though I had suspected it...

Hearing it was different.

"You’re lying.""

"No.""

He looked amused.

"Your father built an empire. Your brothers became powerful. But you...""

He smiled.

"You were the emotional weakness.""

I felt my hands shaking.

Not from fear.

From rage.

"You thought marrying me would destroy my family.""

"No.""

Richard corrected.

"I thought marrying you would give me access.""

I stared at him.

"Access to what?""

His smile disappeared.

"Your father’s hidden assets.""

And then he said the words that changed everything.

"Because Emma, your father didn’t leave you a company.""

A pause.

"He left you something much more valuable.""

I felt the world shift.

"What?""

Richard smiled.

"The evidence that can put half the powerful people in this country behind bars.""

And suddenly, I understood.

This was never about Adrian.

Never about Vanessa.

Never about money.

My marriage had been a battlefield.

And I had been standing in the middle of it the entire time.

May you like

The only question left was...

How long had everyone been planning my downfall before I even said "I do"?
