Chapter 8: The Evidence Buried In The Hospital Records

By noon, Daniel was sitting in a private room at the hospital where Elena had spent her final hours.

He had not been back since the funeral.

He thought he never would.

But grief had changed.

At first, returning here felt impossible.

Now it felt necessary.

Dr. Harris placed a folder on the table.

"I reviewed everything again.""

Daniel opened it.

"What did you find?""

The doctor sat down.

"There were inconsistencies.""

"Meaning?""

"Meaning the official story did not match the records.""

Daniel looked through the pages.

Medical notes.

Admission forms.

Emergency reports.

Everything that had been ignored because nobody thought to question it.

"What inconsistencies?""

Dr. Harris pointed.

"Time of arrival.""

Daniel frowned.

"What about it?""

"Renata said she found Elena after the accident and called immediately.""

"Yes.""

"That is not possible.""

Daniel looked up.

"Why?""

"Because emergency services were contacted twenty-three minutes before Renata's call.""

Daniel stared.

"What?""

The doctor nodded.

"Someone else called.""

The room became silent.

"Who?""

"We don't know.""

Daniel looked back at the documents.

"Why wasn't I told?""

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

"Because by the time you arrived, everyone assumed you already knew.""

Daniel felt anger rising.

Not toward the doctor.

Toward the entire situation.

Everyone had assumed.

Everyone had accepted.

And nobody had asked the questions he should have asked.

"Who was with Elena before the ambulance arrived?""

Dr. Harris hesitated.

"There is one more thing.""

"What?""

"Security footage.""

Daniel looked up.

"From the hospital?""

"No. From the parking area.""

His heart started beating faster.

"You have footage?""

"Not anymore.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"What does that mean?""

"The system was overwritten after thirty days.""

Of course.

Another missing piece.

Another thing that disappeared.

"Except...""

Daniel waited.

Dr. Harris looked toward the door.

"I made a copy.""

Daniel stared.

"You did?""

"I didn't know why at the time. Something felt wrong.""

The doctor handed him a small drive.

Daniel took it carefully.

"What will I see?""

Dr. Harris looked serious.

"Your wife arriving.""

"With Renata?""

"No.""

Daniel froze.

"Then with who?""

The doctor looked at him.

"That is what you need to find out.""

That evening, Daniel watched the footage alone.

The image was grainy.

The quality was poor.

But the truth did not need perfect clarity.

A car entered the parking lot.

A person got out.

Then another.

Daniel leaned closer.

His breath stopped.

Because he recognized the first person.

Renata.

But she was not alone.

Someone else was with her.

Someone Daniel knew.

Someone he never expected to see.

His business partner.

Marcus Vale.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"No.""

He watched again.

Marcus helping carry something from the car.

Renata looking around.

Both of them appearing nervous.

Daniel felt sick.

Marcus had been his closest friend for fifteen years.

The man who stood beside him when Elena died.

The man who told him to focus on healing.

The man who encouraged him to trust Renata.

Suddenly every conversation felt different.

Every piece moved into place.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

Daniel stared at the name.

Then answered.

"Daniel.""

His friend's voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

"How are you holding up?""

Daniel looked at the screen.

At the image of Marcus beside Renata.

"I have a question.""

A pause.

"Sure.""

"Why were you at the hospital the night Elena died?""

Silence.

Only for a second.

But enough.

"Who told you that?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

So that was the answer.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"You were there.""

Marcus sighed.

"Daniel, you need to be careful.""

"Careful of what?""

"Careful about believing things you don't understand.""

Daniel looked at the footage.

"I understand enough.""

"No, you don't.""

The voice on the other end became colder.

"You have no idea what Elena was involved in.""

Daniel froze.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus said nothing.

"Marcus.""

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Elena's letter.

The hospital records.

The hidden footage.

Renata.

Marcus.

The secrets were no longer hidden.

They were connected.

And Daniel finally understood the most terrifying possibility.

May you like

Elena had not been afraid of one person.

She had been afraid of a team.
