Chapter 14: The Last Promise A Mother Made

Daniel returned home before sunset.

But he did not walk in the same man who had left.

The truth had changed him.

Before, he wanted answers.

Now, he wanted justice.

Sofia was sitting at the kitchen table when he entered.

She looked up immediately.

"Daddy?""

He smiled.

"I'm here.""

She studied his face.

"Did you find out?""

Daniel sat beside her.

"Yes.""

"Was Mommy right?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

Sofia looked down.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then:

"Is Renata leaving?""

The question was innocent.

But painful.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Renata was standing there.

Listening.

Waiting.

For once, she looked like she understood there was no escape.

"Yes," Daniel said.

Sofia nodded slowly.

"Okay.""

That was all.

No celebration.

No anger.

Just acceptance.

Because children often understood endings better than adults.

Later that evening, Renata packed a small suitcase.

Daniel watched from the doorway.

"You're not going to stop me?""

"No.""

She looked surprised.

"I thought you would want answers.""

"I already have them.""

Her hands stopped.

"Daniel...""

He looked at her.

"I want to know one thing.""

"What?""

"Did you ever love Sofia?""

Renata looked away.

The question hurt.

Because unlike everything else, this one could not be manipulated.

"I did.""

Daniel waited.

"I did love her.""

"Then why?""

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"Because I was weak.""

The honesty was unexpected.

"I thought if I followed the plan, I would finally belong somewhere.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You already had a place.""

"I know.""

"With us.""

Renata closed her eyes.

"I know.""

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

"Elena tried to help me.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Renata sat down.

"Before everything happened.""

"Explain.""

"She knew I was being used.""

Daniel stared.

"She knew?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she thought you would destroy me.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Why would she care?""

Renata smiled sadly.

"Because Elena was not like us.""

The sentence stayed with him.

Not like us.

People who protected themselves first.

People who chose survival over truth.

Renata wiped her tears.

"She gave me a chance to leave.""

Daniel felt something break.

"She knew?""

"Yes.""

"She knew you were involved?""

Renata nodded.

"She told me to disappear.""

"Why didn't you?""

Renata looked toward Sofia's room.

"Because I was afraid.""

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that had destroyed everything.

"I thought Marcus would come after me.""

"And instead?""

"I helped him.""

Daniel looked away.

Because there was nothing left to say.

That night, Daniel listened to Elena’s recording one final time.

But this time, he noticed something.

A sound in the background.

A door.

A voice.

Someone else in the room.

He increased the volume.

Static.

Then Elena.

"If something happens, I need someone to know.""

A man's voice.

Muffled.

But recognizable.

Daniel froze.

He played it again.

The voice was older.

Deeper.

But he knew it.

Jonathan.

Then Elena spoke again.

"Jonathan, you cannot do this.""

Daniel stopped the recording.

Because suddenly he understood.

Jonathan had not been following orders.

He had created them.

He had used Daniel's father’s name as an excuse.

The entire plan had a different architect.

Someone who had spent decades learning how powerful families worked.

Someone who knew secrets.

Someone who knew how to control people.

The next morning, Detective Collins arrived with urgent news.

"We found Jonathan.""

"Where?""

"At the airport.""

Daniel stood.

"Leaving?""

"No.""

The detective looked serious.

"He was waiting for someone.""

"Who?""

Collins handed him a photograph.

Daniel looked at it.

His face changed.

Because the person standing beside Jonathan was someone Daniel thought was gone forever.

Someone connected to the past.

Someone Elena had feared.

Someone who should not have been alive.

"Who is that?"" Daniel whispered.

Detective Collins looked at him.

"You tell me.""

Daniel stared at the picture.

Then he saw the name on the identification report.

And his blood turned cold.

May you like

Because the person Jonathan had been meeting...

Was Elena's brother.
