Chapter 12: The Person Elena Trusted Before Everyone Else
Daniel replayed the recording three times.
Three times.
And every time, the same name filled the room.
The same impossible truth.
The same betrayal.
He wanted to believe he misunderstood.
He wanted to believe grief had damaged his hearing.
But Elena's voice was clear.
Calm.
Certain.
She had known.
She had discovered everything.
And before she died, she had tried to leave him one final warning.
The person involved was not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Someone close.
Someone who had been welcomed into their home.
Daniel sat in darkness until morning.
When Sofia woke up, he was still there.
"Daddy?""
He looked up.
She was holding the drawing from yesterday.
"Are you sad?""
Daniel smiled gently.
"Yes.""
"Because of Mommy?""
He nodded.
Sofia climbed into his lap.
"Mommy said sad feelings don't stay forever.""
Daniel looked at her.
"She said that?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"Before she got sick.""
His heart tightened.
Elena.
Always trying to prepare them.
Always trying to protect them.
Even when nobody protected her.
Later that morning, Daniel met Detective Collins again.
"I know who Elena was talking about.""
The detective looked up.
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
Saying the name felt like another betrayal.
"Someone inside my family.""
Collins studied him.
"Are you sure?""
"No.""
Daniel looked down.
"But Elena was.""
He handed over the recorder.
The detective listened.
When it ended, his expression changed.
"That is significant.""
"Can you investigate?""
"We can.""
Daniel nodded.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice.
"Daniel.""
He froze.
Because he recognized it.
Not from recent years.
From before.
A voice connected to memories.
"Who is this?""
"You need to listen carefully.""
The woman sounded scared.
"Who are you?""
"My name is Claire.""
Daniel stood.
"Claire who?""
A pause.
Then:
"Claire Bennett.""
His heart stopped.
Claire Bennett.
Elena's closest friend.
The woman who moved away six months before Elena died.
The woman everyone believed abandoned her.
"Why are you calling me?""
"Because Elena asked me to.""
Daniel felt cold.
"When?""
"Three days before she died.""
He grabbed the edge of the desk.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"Because I was warned not to.""
"By who?""
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
"By the person Elena trusted most.""
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
Toward Sofia.
Toward the life he thought he understood.
"What did Elena tell you?""
Claire took a shaky breath.
"She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to make sure you found out the truth.""
"What truth?""
The answer came quietly.
"Your wife discovered the person helping Marcus was not doing it for money.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then why?""
Claire's voice dropped.
"Because they wanted custody of Sofia.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
The world became still.
"Who?""
Claire whispered the name.
And Daniel felt every piece of his life break apart.
Because the person Elena feared...
The person who had been helping Marcus...
The person who wanted control of his daughter...
Was the person standing in his house every day.
Renata.
But Daniel already knew about Renata.
That was not the shocking part.
The shocking part was what Claire said next.
"Daniel...""
Her voice trembled.
"Renata wasn't the one who planned it.""
A cold feeling moved through him.
"Then who did?""
Claire answered:
"The person who introduced Renata to you.""
Daniel's face went pale.
Because suddenly he understood.
Marcus had not found Renata.
Renata had not found Marcus.
Someone had brought them together.
Someone had designed the entire nightmare.
And Elena had spent her final days trying to stop a plan that was much bigger than anyone realized.
A plan that started long before she died.
May you like
A plan that was still happening.
And now Sofia was the target.
