Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath The Perfect Marriage

By sunrise, Daniel had made a decision.

He was no longer looking for explanations.

He was looking for the truth.

And the truth had a way of destroying whatever was built on lies.

Renata found him in the kitchen.

She immediately knew something had changed.

"You talked to someone.""

Daniel poured coffee without looking at her.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"Someone who knew Elena better than you thought.""

Her face tightened.

"Daniel.""

He finally looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me you brought Elena to the hospital?""

Renata froze.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

"I didn't think it mattered.""

"Her life ended that night.""

"I was trying to help.""

"You lied.""

The accusation hung between them.

Renata’s eyes filled with anger.

"You think I wanted any of this?""

Daniel stared.

"I think you wanted something.""

She stepped back.

"How dare you.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

"How dare you make my daughter believe she had to hide her own mother.""

That hurt her more than anything.

Because it was true.

"I loved Sofia.""

"Then why was she afraid of you?""

Renata looked away.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Not powerful.

Not controlled.

Just tired.

"I never wanted Elena to die.""

Daniel’s heart stopped.

The wording mattered.

Not "I had nothing to do with it.""

Not "I don't know what happened.""

I never wanted Elena to die.

A sentence that carried something underneath.

"You knew something would happen.""

Renata immediately shook her head.

"No.""

"You knew she was in danger.""

"No.""

"Then why did you say it like that?""

She had no answer.

Daniel moved closer.

"Tell me the truth.""

Renata looked at him.

"I was scared.""

"Of Elena?""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"Of what she knew.""

The confession was quiet.

But devastating.

Daniel waited.

"What did she know?""

Renata sat down.

The confidence was gone.

"I made mistakes.""

"What kind of mistakes?""

"Before I met you, I was desperate.""

"That is not an answer.""

She looked at him.

"I used people.""

Daniel said nothing.

"I lied.""

Still nothing.

"I thought marrying you would fix my life.""

The honesty was ugly.

But real.

"And Elena found out.""

Daniel looked at the floor.

"She was going to leave me.""

"No.""

Renata shook her head.

"She was going to expose me.""

"How?""

"I don't know.""

That answer was impossible.

"You don't know?""

Renata covered her face.

"She never told me everything.""

Daniel watched her.

"And you were afraid.""

"Yes.""

"Enough to hide her letter?""

"Yes.""

"Enough to make Sofia forget her?""

Renata looked up.

"I didn't mean for it to become that.""

"But it did.""

Silence.

Then Daniel heard something.

A small sound.

A gasp.

He turned.

Sofia stood at the doorway.

She had heard everything.

Renata stood immediately.

"Sofia—"

But the girl stepped backward.

Fear returned to her face.

The same fear Daniel had seen the day before.

Only now he understood it.

She was not afraid of being punished.

She was afraid because someone she trusted had broken something inside her.

"Daddy...""

Daniel moved toward her.

"Sofia.""

"Did Mommy know?""

He stopped.

"Know what?""

"That Renata didn't love us?""

The question broke him.

Because a child should never have to ask if she was loved.

Daniel walked to her and held her.

"Your mother loved you more than anything.""

"But she was scared?""

He looked toward Renata.

Then back at his daughter.

"Yes.""

Sofia whispered:

"Why didn't you save her?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because that was the question he had been asking himself for two years.

And there was no answer that would ever feel good enough.

"I don't know.""

The honesty mattered.

Sofia cried quietly.

And across the room, Renata watched.

For the first time, she understood what she had truly lost.

Not money.

Not a marriage.

Not a comfortable life.

She had lost the ability to control the story.

Because stories belonged to the people who survived them.

And Sofia had survived.

The next morning, Daniel found another envelope hidden behind Elena’s old portrait.

One he had never seen before.

One Renata had missed.

And written across the front, in Elena’s handwriting, were five words:

"For Daniel. After you know the truth."" :::
