Chapter 10: The Meeting Where The Truth Finally Spoke
Daniel stared at the message for nearly a minute.
*"We need to talk before you make the same mistake Elena made.""*
The words were simple.
But they carried a warning.
Not concern.
Not friendship.
A warning.
Marcus was not asking to explain.
He was telling Daniel to stop.
And that told Daniel everything he needed to know.
For fifteen years, he had believed Marcus was the one person in his life who would never betray him.
The irony was almost unbearable.
The man who knew him best was the man who knew exactly how to destroy him.
Daniel walked to the window of his office.
Outside, the city was waking up.
People were driving to work.
Children were going to school.
Families were starting normal days.
But inside the Mercer house, nothing was normal anymore.
Because the truth had finally entered the room.
And once the truth entered, there was no way to force it back out.
His phone rang again.
Marcus.
Daniel answered.
"Where?""
A pause.
Marcus sounded surprised.
"That was fast.""
"Where?""
"Your old office.""
Daniel frowned.
The old office.
The place where he and Marcus built their company before moving into the larger building downtown.
The place filled with memories.
The place Marcus knew Daniel would go because it mattered.
"Why there?""
"Because that is where this started.""
Daniel almost ended the call.
But he didn't.
"One hour.""
Then he hung up.
Before leaving, Daniel checked on Sofia.
She was sitting on the floor in her room, drawing.
He stood in the doorway.
"What are you making?""
She looked up.
"A picture.""
He walked closer.
It was a picture of their family.
Daniel.
Sofia.
Elena.
And surprisingly, even Renata.
Daniel looked at it.
"You included everyone.""
Sofia nodded.
"Mommy said people can do bad things and still be people.""
The sentence stopped him.
Because that sounded exactly like Elena.
Kind.
Fair.
Even toward those who hurt her.
"Do you miss her?""
Sofia nodded.
"Every day.""
Daniel sat beside her.
"Me too.""
The little girl leaned against him.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Are you going to make Mommy's secret go away?""
Daniel looked at her.
"No.""
"Good.""
Her voice was quiet.
"Because I think Mommy wanted someone to know.""
Daniel kissed her forehead.
"She did.""
Then he left.
The old office looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same wooden desk.
The same shelves.
The same photographs.
A museum of a friendship that no longer existed.
Marcus was standing near the window when Daniel entered.
He looked older.
Not physically.
Something else.
Like someone who had spent years carrying a secret.
"You came.""
Daniel closed the door.
"You knew I would.""
Marcus smiled sadly.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because you are Elena's husband.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"No.""
He stepped closer.
"I came because I want the truth.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Are you sure?""
The question bothered Daniel.
Because it sounded like Marcus genuinely believed the truth would hurt him.
"Tell me what happened.""
Marcus walked to the desk.
"I made mistakes.""
"That is not enough.""
"I know.""
"Elena died because of those mistakes.""
Marcus looked away.
"I never wanted that.""
Daniel froze.
Again.
The same wording.
Not denial.
Not innocence.
"I never wanted that.""
He stepped forward.
"What happened?""
Marcus remained silent.
Then finally:
"Elena found the financial records.""
Daniel already knew.
"She confronted me.""
"Why was Renata there?""
Marcus looked surprised.
"She told you?""
"Answer.""
He sighed.
"Renata was involved.""
"How?""
"She helped me.""
Daniel felt anger rise.
"With what?""
"Getting information.""
"From me?""
Marcus nodded.
The honesty was almost worse than another lie.
"Why?""
Marcus looked at him.
"Because I believed the company should have been mine.""
Daniel stared.
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
Greed.
Not desperation.
Not accident.
Greed.
"You were my brother.""
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Daniel's voice cracked.
"You don't know what that means.""
Marcus said nothing.
Daniel walked around the room.
"Elena knew.""
"Yes.""
"And she was going to expose you.""
"Yes.""
"What happened that night?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"She had the documents.""
Daniel waited.
"She told me she was going to tell you everything.""
"And?""
"I tried to stop her.""
The silence that followed was unbearable.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus looked at him.
"I grabbed the folder.""
Daniel's breathing slowed.
"And?""
"She pulled away.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Then what?""
Marcus looked down.
"She fell.""
The room disappeared.
Daniel heard nothing.
No traffic.
No city.
No sound.
Only that word.
Fell.
"What did you do?""
Marcus whispered:
"I panicked.""
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
"You left her.""
"No.""
"You left her.""
Marcus looked broken.
"I called Renata.""
Daniel stared.
"And she came.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Marcus answered quietly.
"Because we both knew what would happen if you found out.""
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Not because Marcus confessed.
Because part of him had already known.
Two people.
Two liars.
May you like
One secret.
And Elena had died trying to protect him.
