Chapter 13: The Name Elena Left Behind

Daniel did not speak for several seconds after Claire finished.

The silence on the phone became uncomfortable.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

His entire life had become a series of truths arriving too late.

First, Elena’s letter.

Then the hospital records.

Then Marcus.

Then Renata.

And now this.

Someone had designed it.

Someone had placed the pieces together before Daniel ever knew there was a game being played.

"Claire," Daniel said finally, his voice low.

"Tell me everything.""

On the other end of the phone, she exhaled.

"I should have called you years ago.""

"Why didn't you?""

"Because Elena made me promise.""

Daniel froze.

"She made you promise?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew you.""

The answer confused him.

"What does that mean?""

Claire's voice softened.

"Elena knew you would run toward the problem. She knew you would confront people before you had enough proof.""

Daniel looked down.

She was right.

That was exactly what he would have done.

"She was trying to protect me?""

"No.""

A pause.

"She was trying to protect Sofia.""

The words hit differently.

Everything always came back to Sofia.

The child Elena loved more than anything.

The child she tried to protect even when she knew she might not survive.

"Who introduced Renata to Marcus?"" Daniel asked.

Claire was quiet.

Then:

"Your father.""

Daniel stopped.

The room seemed to disappear.

"My father is dead.""

"I know.""

"Claire.""

"I know what I said sounds impossible.""

Daniel stood.

His hands tightened.

"My father died five years ago.""

"Yes.""

"Then explain.""

Claire took a breath.

"Your father did not meet Renata personally. Not the way you think.""

"Then how?""

"Through someone who worked for him.""

Daniel's mind raced.

His father had been a powerful man.

A businessman.

A man with enemies.

A man who always had people around him.

"Who?""

Claire answered carefully.

"Someone who still works for your family.""

Daniel felt a chill.

"Who?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Your father's attorney.""

The name immediately came to him.

A man who had been around since Daniel was young.

A man who handled the family's legal affairs.

A man Daniel trusted without question.

"Jonathan Reed.""

Claire said nothing.

She did not need to.

Daniel knew.

Jonathan Reed arrived at the Mercer estate that afternoon.

Daniel did not invite him inside.

They stood in the library.

The same room where Daniel’s father used to make business decisions.

The same room where generations of the Mercer family had controlled their future.

Jonathan looked older than Daniel remembered.

But calm.

Always calm.

That was his gift.

He made every situation look manageable.

"Daniel," he said.

"I heard there have been misunderstandings.""

Daniel almost laughed.

"Misunderstandings.""

Jonathan adjusted his glasses.

"Yes.""

"You knew Renata before I did.""

A flicker.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

But Daniel saw it.

"I knew of her.""

"Through Marcus.""

Jonathan remained silent.

That was the first real crack.

Daniel stepped closer.

"You helped them.""

"No.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

"Then why did Elena mention you?""

Jonathan's face changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

"She found out.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What did she find out?""

Jonathan looked toward the old shelves.

"Your father left instructions.""

"What?""

"After his death.""

Daniel stared.

"My father was dead before Elena died.""

"Yes.""

"Then why would he have instructions involving her?""

Jonathan did not answer.

Daniel's voice hardened.

"Answer me.""

Jonathan sighed.

"Your father was worried.""

"About what?""

"About the company.""

Daniel frowned.

"The company?""

"And about Sofia.""

The name changed everything.

"Why would my father worry about Sofia?""

Jonathan looked at him.

"Because he believed the Mercer family could not survive without an heir.""

Daniel felt sick.

There it was.

The real motive.

Not money.

Not love.

Control.

"You're saying my father wanted Sofia?""

Jonathan looked away.

"I am saying your father wanted the Mercer name protected.""

"My daughter is not a business asset.""

"No.""

Jonathan's voice became colder.

"To people like your father, she was the future.""

Daniel stepped back.

The realization was horrifying.

Everything Elena feared.

Everything she wrote.

Everything she discovered.

It was not about taking money.

It was about taking Sofia.

"Who else knows?""

Jonathan did not answer.

And Daniel understood.

Too many people.

Too many secrets.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From Detective Collins.

*We found something at the old Mercer property. You need to come immediately.*

Daniel looked at Jonathan.

"You are not leaving.""

Jonathan’s expression changed.

"Daniel.""

"You spent years protecting a plan that hurt my family.""

"I was protecting the family.""

Daniel stared at him.

"No.""

His voice was quiet.

"You were protecting the people who controlled it.""

At the old Mercer property, Detective Collins stood beside a vehicle.

"We found this hidden under the floorboards.""

He handed Daniel a box.

Inside were documents.

Old ones.

Signed by his father.

Daniel opened the first page.

His hands went cold.

It was a legal agreement.

A custody arrangement.

Created years before Sofia was even born.

A plan.

A backup plan.

A way for someone else to control her future.

Then he found the final page.

A signature.

Not his father’s.

Not Jonathan’s.

Renata’s.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because now he understood.

Renata had not entered his life randomly.

She had been chosen.

Prepared.

Placed.

And Elena had discovered the truth too late.

But one question remained.

Why had Renata stayed?

Why had she continued the plan after Elena died?

Then Detective Collins handed him another document.

"There's something else.""

Daniel opened it.

The date was two weeks after Elena’s death.

A private agreement.

Between Marcus.

Jonathan.

And Renata.

The purpose?

Temporary guardianship of Sofia.

Daniel looked up.

His face was pale.

"They planned this after Elena died.""

Collins nodded.

"No.""

Daniel stared at the paper.

"They planned this before.""

The detective looked serious.

"Daniel.""

He looked toward the house in the distance.

The house where Sofia was waiting.

The house where the enemy had lived beside them.

"They were never trying to replace Elena.""

May you like

Daniel folded the papers.

"They were trying to replace me.""
