Chapter 9: The Brother No One Knew Existed
Claire couldn't move.
The man standing in the garage looked so much like Daniel that for one disorienting second she wondered whether the afternoon had finally pushed her beyond reality.
Then she looked at Daniel.
His face was drained of color.
“Michael,” he whispered again.
The stranger's smile disappeared.
“You still say my name like you're surprised I'm alive.””
Rodriguez stepped between them.
“Hands where I can see them.””
Michael raised his hands higher.
“I'm not here to hurt anyone.””
“Then don't move.””
Michael's eyes shifted toward Noah.
The boy stood behind Claire, trembling.
Michael's expression softened.
“I remember you.””
Noah's face tightened.
“I remember you too.””
Claire's heart slammed against her ribs.
“What did you do to my son?””
Michael looked at her.
“Nothing.””
“You were at the blue house.””
“Yes.””
“You carried Noah.””
“Yes.””
Daniel suddenly snapped.
“You're lying.””
Michael turned toward his brother.
“You know I'm not.””
Rodriguez pointed toward the ground.
“Stay exactly where you are.””
Michael obeyed.
Claire couldn't take her eyes off him.
“Why do you look like Daniel?””
Michael gave a short, humorless laugh.
“Because we're twins.””
The word hit Claire harder than anything else that day.
Twins.
She turned toward Daniel.
“You have a twin?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel.””
“He's not supposed to be here.””
Michael laughed.
“That part is true.””
Claire stared at them both.
All the lies suddenly had a shape.
Two identical faces.
Two men.
One life that had been hidden behind another.
Noah whispered, “Which one is my dad?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I am.””
Michael's expression changed.
“You don't know that.””
Claire looked sharply at him.
“What did you mean?””
Michael stepped carefully forward.
“I mean nobody knows.””
Rodriguez asked, “Are you saying you're Noah's father?””
Michael shook his head.
“I'm saying Daniel never proved he was.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“That's enough.””
“No.””
Michael looked at Claire.
“She deserves to know.””
Claire's voice was barely steady.
“What happened the night Noah was born?””
Michael looked toward the patio.
“The same thing Daniel has been trying to hide for eight years.””
He slowly lowered his hands.
“I came to the blue house because Rebecca called me.””
Daniel interrupted.
“She called you once.””
“She called me twice.””
“You weren't supposed to go.””
“She was my sister too.””
Claire blinked.
“Sister?””
Michael nodded.
“Rebecca was my sister.””
That changed everything.
He wasn't Ethan.
He wasn't the mysterious man from the phone.
He was Daniel's twin brother—and Rebecca's brother.
Claire looked from one man to the other.
“How many people knew about this family?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Too many.””
Michael continued.
“Rebecca knew I would help her. Daniel knew I'd help her. Ethan knew I'd help her. That's why Daniel lied about me.””
Claire frowned.
“Why would he pretend you didn't exist?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Because Michael was supposed to be dead.””
Claire stared.
“What?””
Michael's expression hardened.
“On paper.””
Rodriguez looked between them.
“Let's slow this down.””
Michael nodded.
“Eight years ago, Daniel was drowning in debt. Ethan was threatening Rebecca. Rebecca was pregnant. And I had information that could have exposed all of them.””
“What information?””
“Financial records.””
“The same records in the metal box?””
“Yes.””
Claire's eyes widened.
“Then why was your name never mentioned?””
“Because Daniel used my identity.””
She turned to Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Michael answered for him.
“My brother opened accounts under my name.””
Daniel didn't deny it.
Claire's voice became colder.
“You stole your own brother's identity?””
“I borrowed it.””
“Without his permission?””
“Yes.””
Michael gave a bitter smile.
“That is Daniel's favorite word. Borrowed.””
Rodriguez looked at Daniel.
“Did you use your brother's identity to move the money?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I was trying to get Rebecca out.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You were trying to get yourself out.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You weren't there.””
“I was.””
“You didn't see what happened.””
“I saw enough.””
Claire looked between them.
“What happened after the fire?””
Michael's expression became distant.
“I carried Noah out.””
“Noah remembers you.””
“Yes.””
“Why did you take him?””
“Because Rebecca told me to.””
Claire held her breath.
“She was alive?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked down.
“Daniel thought she was dead.””
Michael looked directly at him.
“You knew she wasn't.””
Daniel said nothing.
Claire stepped closer.
“You knew Rebecca survived?””
Daniel finally whispered, “Yes.””
“When?””
“About twenty minutes after the fire.””
Claire stared at him in disbelief.
“You knew.””
“I saw her.””
“Then why did you tell everyone she was gone?””
“Because Ethan found her.””
Michael shook his head.
“You're leaving something out.””
Daniel looked at him.
Michael's voice hardened.
“Tell her.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Rebecca was injured.””
“How badly?””
“Badly.””
“Was she conscious?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“She told me to take Noah.””
Claire's expression faltered.
“What?””
“She said Ethan would come back.””
Michael added quietly, “And she told Daniel to take the baby and disappear.””
Claire's heart pounded.
“Then why did she later say you stole Noah?””
Michael answered.
“Because she didn't know what Daniel did next.””
Claire turned.
“What did you do?””
Daniel's lips trembled.
“I changed the plan.””
“What plan?””
“I took Noah to the hospital.””
“And?””
“I left him there.””
Claire stared at him.
“You abandoned your own son?””
“I thought Rebecca would find him.””
Michael shook his head.
“She couldn't.””
“What happened?””
Michael looked at Claire.
“Rebecca was taken.””
“By whom?””
Michael paused.
“Ethan.””
Claire felt a cold wave move through her.
“But Ethan said Rebecca was dangerous.””
“He lied.””
“Why?””
“Because Ethan wanted the financial records.””
Rodriguez asked, “And what happened to Rebecca?””
Michael's face tightened.
“She escaped.””
Claire whispered, “Where is she now?””
Michael looked at the darkened security monitor.
“Close.””
Claire's breath caught.
“You've been helping her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why let her terrify us?””
“Because she needed Daniel to confess.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You had no right.””
Michael's voice cracked.
“Neither did you.””
Silence.
For years, these brothers had apparently carried the same secret from different sides.
Claire looked at Noah.
“Sweetheart, when you said there were two men who looked like Dad, were they Daniel and Michael?””
Noah nodded.
“But I remember another man.””
Michael's expression changed.
“Ethan.””
Noah shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone stared at him.
“I saw him in the fire.””
Michael crouched slightly.
“What did he look like?””
Noah squeezed Claire's hand.
“He was holding Mom.””
Daniel went rigid.
Michael's face lost its color.
“Rebecca?””
Noah nodded.
“She was crying.””
“What else?””
“He said he was taking her somewhere.””
“Where?””
Noah closed his eyes.
“A truck.””
“What color?””
“Red.””
Michael stood.
“Ethan's truck.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You knew.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“Yes.””
“You knew Ethan took Rebecca.””
“Yes.””
“And you let everyone believe she died.””
Daniel nodded.
“Why?””
“Because I was scared he'd come back for Noah.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You weren't scared of Ethan.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You were scared of what Rebecca would say.””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
Claire felt something sink inside her.
“What would Rebecca say?””
Michael turned to Claire.
“The truth about Noah's father.””
Claire looked at him.
“What truth?””
Michael reached into his jacket.
Rodriguez immediately tensed.
Michael slowly pulled out a folded envelope.
“I found this in Rebecca's old apartment.””
He handed it to Rodriguez.
Inside was a DNA report.
Claire saw the name before anyone spoke.
*Noah Hale.*
She felt dizzy.
Rodriguez scanned the page.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Bennett.””
Daniel couldn't look at him.
Michael said quietly, “Read the result.””
Rodriguez did.
“The probability of paternity…”
He stopped.
His eyes moved between Daniel and Michael.
Claire's breathing became shallow.
“What does it say?””
Rodriguez answered carefully.
“Michael Bennett is the biological father.””
Claire stared at Michael.
Then at Daniel.
Noah looked frightened.
“Mom?””
Claire immediately knelt.
“No matter what this paper says, you're still my son.””
Noah began to cry.
Michael's expression broke.
“I never wanted to take him from you.””
Claire looked up.
“Then what do you want?””
Michael answered.
“Rebecca.””
“What happened to her?””
He hesitated.
“She doesn't trust Daniel.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Michael looked toward the street.
“She was supposed to come here tonight.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Michael ignored him.
“She wanted to tell Claire everything herself.””
“Where is she?”” Claire asked.
Michael looked at his watch.
“She should have arrived ten minutes ago.””
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Should have?””
“Yes.””
Rodriguez moved toward the driveway.
“Did you lose contact with her?””
Michael nodded.
“Her phone went dead.””
Daniel whispered, “Ethan.””
Michael turned sharply.
“How do you know?””
“Because he's done this before.””
Rodriguez looked at Daniel.
“Where would he take her?””
Daniel's face went pale.
“The old ranch.””
Michael's expression changed.
“You said that place was abandoned.””
“It is.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire suddenly remembered the last line from Rebecca's letter.
Noah's blood matters less than what happened the night he was born.
She looked at Michael.
“There's something else.””
Michael met her eyes.
“What?””
“The red folder had documents, but not everything.””
“What was missing?””
Claire thought about the hidden phone, the bank records, the photographs.
“The final page.””
Michael's face tightened.
“What final page?””
“The page that explains why Rebecca disappeared.””
Michael stared at her.
Then he whispered:
“That page was never in the folder.””
“Where is it?””
He looked toward Daniel.
Daniel had gone silent.
Too silent.
Claire turned.
“What aren't you telling me?””
Daniel slowly reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
Michael's face changed immediately.
“You kept it.””
Daniel nodded.
“For eight years.””
Claire took one step toward him.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at her.
“It says who ordered the blue house fire.””
Claire's pulse raced.
“Who?””
Daniel unfolded the paper.
His hands were shaking.
Then he looked at Noah.
And finally at Claire.
Before he could speak, every light in the house went out.
The backyard plunged into darkness.
Duke began barking violently.
A car door slammed outside.
Then a woman's scream cut through the night.
Claire recognized the voice instantly.
Rebecca.
Daniel dropped the paper.
Michael ran toward the driveway.
Rodriguez drew his weapon.
And from somewhere beyond the gate, a man's voice shouted:
“Claire! Don't trust either brother!””
Then the scream came again.
Closer.
And Noah whispered the words that made Claire's blood run cold.
“That isn't Rebecca.””
She turned toward him.
“How do you know?””
May you like
Noah stared into the darkness.
“Because Rebecca is behind us.””
