Chapter 6: The Phone Beneath the Floor
The ringing stopped.
Claire stood in the middle of the study, staring at the wooden floor beneath the old desk.
Nobody moved.
Then it started again.
One sharp vibration.
Then another.
The sound was muffled by the floorboards, but unmistakable.
“There,” Claire whispered.
Rodriguez raised one hand.
“Everybody stay back.””
He crouched beside the desk and ran his fingers over the wood.
“Which board?””
Rebecca's voice still echoed in Claire's mind.
There's a loose board beneath the old study desk.
Daniel looked as though he might be sick.
Rodriguez pushed the desk aside.
Beneath it, one floorboard was slightly darker than the others.
He pressed down.
It moved.
“Mr. Bennett,” Rodriguez said, “step away.””
Daniel obeyed.
Rodriguez used a thin metal tool to lift the board.
Underneath was a narrow compartment.
Inside sat a red folder, an old smartphone, and a small black flash drive.
The phone was still vibrating.
Claire stared at it.
“That's not mine.””
Daniel said nothing.
Rodriguez picked it up using a cloth.
The screen showed three missed calls.
All from the same number.
No name.
Just numbers.
Then a new call came in.
Rodriguez answered.
“Hello?””
Static.
Then a man's voice.
“Where's Daniel?””
Rodriguez's eyes narrowed.
“Who is this?””
The man ignored him.
“Put Daniel on.””
Rodriguez looked at Daniel.
Daniel shook his head.
The voice became colder.
“If Claire opens that red folder, Noah's life changes forever.””
Claire felt her stomach tighten.
She stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
The line went silent.
Then the man said, “Ask your husband what happened on March 14.””
The call ended.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“It's always the same date.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
“Tell me what happened.””
“I will.””
“When?””
Daniel looked toward Noah, who was sitting on the couch in the living room with an officer beside him.
“When this is over.””
Claire's expression hardened.
“No. It ends when you tell the truth.””
Rodriguez placed the phone on a table.
“She's right.””
Daniel slowly nodded.
He walked toward the desk.
Then stopped.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
Claire laughed softly.
“You always say that when the truth catches up with you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I was twenty-six.””
“That doesn't excuse ten years of lying.””
“I know.””
Rodriguez picked up the red folder.
“Let's see what you were hiding.””
He opened it.
The first document was an old hospital record.
Claire read the name.
Rebecca Hale.
Then the date.
March 14, 2018.
Her heart pounded.
The next page was a birth record.
Male infant.
Noah Hale.
Claire's hands went numb.
“His last name was Hale?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why Bennett?””
“Because I changed it.””
“You changed his legal identity.””
“I had to.””
“You had to?””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“Ethan was looking for him.””
Claire shook her head.
“You keep saying Ethan.””
“Because Ethan was dangerous.””
Rodriguez turned another page.
A document fell from the folder.
It was a notarized statement.
Claire picked it up.
Her eyes stopped on the signature.
Rebecca Hale.
The statement said she voluntarily surrendered temporary custody of her newborn son to Daniel Bennett.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You said you took him.””
“I did.””
“This says she gave you temporary custody.””
“She signed it because she was frightened.””
Claire read further.
Then she stopped.
“What is this?””
A handwritten note had been added to the bottom.
Temporary only. Return Noah when danger passes.
Claire stared at Daniel.
“You never returned him.””
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca disappeared.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You said she left.””
“She did.””
“You said you didn't know where she went.””
“I didn't.””
“Then how did you know she was dangerous?””
Daniel looked away.
Rodriguez opened another page.
A police report.
The date was March 15, 2018.
One day after Noah's birth.
Claire read the first line.
Incident involving Ethan Hale and Daniel Bennett.
Her pulse raced.
“What happened?””
Daniel remained silent.
Rodriguez read the report aloud.
“Possible assault. Vehicle abandoned near Trinity River. One unidentified male fled scene.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“That was Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“Was he hurt?””
Daniel hesitated.
“He fell.””
“Was he alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he now?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“I don't know.””
Rodriguez's expression tightened.
“That's not what this report says.””
He pointed to the final page.
Claire read it.
Ethan Hale refused medical treatment and was released into the custody of Daniel Bennett.
She looked up.
“You took him somewhere?””
Daniel didn't answer.
“You took Ethan somewhere.””
“He threatened Rebecca.””
“What did you do to him?””
“I didn't kill him.””
Claire froze.
Nobody had accused him of murder.
Yet Daniel had answered the question she hadn't asked.
Rodriguez noticed too.
“Where did you leave him?””
Daniel stared at him.
“At an abandoned ranch.””
“Whose ranch?””
“My father's.””
“Where?””
“Outside Fort Worth.””
Claire's chest tightened.
“You told me your father sold that property.””
“I lied.””
The room seemed to shrink around her.
Another lie.
Another secret.
Another piece of the life Daniel had carefully built.
Rodriguez closed the folder.
“We're going to that ranch.””
“No.””
Daniel's voice was immediate.
“You're not going there.””
“Why?””
“Because there's nothing there.””
“You've just admitted there was.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“The night I took Noah, Ethan came to the hospital.””
Claire's face went pale.
“You never told me that.””
“He wanted the baby.””
“What did he do?””
“He threatened Rebecca.””
“Threatened her how?””
“He said he'd expose everything.””
“Everything?””
Daniel nodded.
“The money. The people I worked with. The things Rebecca knew.””
Claire frowned.
“What things?””
Daniel's eyes moved toward the hidden compartment.
“Rebecca had evidence.””
“What kind?””
“Bank records. Names. Payments.””
“Of who?””
“People in Dallas.””
“Politicians?””
“Business owners. Lawyers. A judge.””
Rodriguez exchanged a look with another officer.
Claire felt a chill.
“And Ethan wanted those records?””
“Yes.””
“Did Rebecca have them?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Daniel looked at the red folder.
“Somewhere I never found.””
Claire stared at him.
“But you knew about them.””
“Yes.””
“And the photograph?””
Daniel shook his head.
“That wasn't evidence.””
“Then why was it in Noah's backpack?””
“I don't know.””
Noah suddenly called from the living room.
“Mom?””
Claire turned.
He was holding something.
A little plastic key.
“I found this in Dad's room.””
Daniel's face changed instantly.
“Give me that.””
Noah stepped back.
Claire intercepted him.
“What does it open?””
Noah looked confused.
“I don't know.””
Daniel walked toward them.
Rodriguez blocked his path.
“Stay back.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“That opens a safe.””
Claire's heart raced.
“What safe?””
Daniel said nothing.
Rodriguez asked, “Where?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Behind the garage.””
Everyone turned.
The large garage had always seemed ordinary to Claire.
Two cars.
Tool cabinets.
Storage shelves.
A workbench.
Nothing suspicious.
Yet now every ordinary corner looked different.
They followed Daniel outside.
The sun was dropping lower over the backyard.
Long shadows stretched across the grass.
Duke began barking again.
This time at the garage.
Claire watched the dog.
Then she noticed something.
A section of concrete wall near the back had been painted recently.
The color didn't match the rest.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“That wall.””
Daniel's face went pale.
Rodriguez approached it.
He tapped the surface.
Hollow.
The detective looked at Daniel.
“Open it.””
“I can't.””
“You can.””
“I don't have the key.””
Noah held up the little plastic key.
Daniel stared at it.
“That's not for that.””
Rodriguez took the key.
He examined it.
“Then what does it open?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Rodriguez handed the key back to Claire.
She stepped toward him.
“Tell me.””
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
“The kennel.””
Claire's eyes widened.
She turned toward Duke's kennel.
The dog was still barking furiously.
Rodriguez immediately walked over.
There was a small lock beneath the metal frame.
The plastic key fit perfectly.
Claire's fingers trembled.
She inserted it.
The lock clicked.
She opened the hidden panel at the bottom of the kennel.
Inside was a narrow metal box.
The same box Daniel had placed there three nights earlier.
Claire stared at her husband.
“You knew.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Rodriguez opened the box.
Inside were several photographs, a stack of bank records, two passports, and a handwritten list of names.
At the very bottom was an envelope.
Claire reached for it.
Written across the front were five words.
For Noah, when he turns ten.
Her breath caught.
Noah had turned ten six months earlier.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was unmistakably Rebecca's.
Claire read the first line.
Dear Noah,
Her vision blurred.
If you're reading this, your father has finally run out of places to hide you.
Claire looked at Daniel.
He had tears streaming down his face.
The letter continued.
I need you to know one thing before you believe anything he tells you.
Claire's hands trembled.
You were never the reason I left.
She stopped reading.
Noah was standing behind her.
“Mom?””
Claire turned.
He looked terrified.
She folded the letter against her chest.
“Your mother left something for you.””
Noah stepped closer.
“Why?””
Claire looked at Daniel.
Because she finally understood that the mystery wasn't about whether Rebecca had abandoned her son.
The real question was who had forced her to disappear.
And according to the letter, the answer was buried somewhere inside the Bennett family itself.
At the bottom of the last page was one final sentence.
Claire read it aloud.
“Trust Claire.””
Daniel's face went completely still.
Then his phone rang again.
This time, the number was saved.
The caller name appeared on the screen.
Ethan Hale.
No one spoke.
May you like
The phone kept ringing.
And Daniel didn't dare answer.
