Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photograph
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Daniel's confession hung in the air like smoke.
“Rebecca is Noah's mother.””
Claire stared at her husband as though he had suddenly started speaking another language.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Claire—”
“No.””
She stepped backward, pulling Noah closer.
“You told me his mother died.””
“I said she was gone.””
“You said she abandoned him.””
“I thought that was easier.””
“Easier?””
Claire's voice broke.
“You let me raise a child while hiding the identity of his mother from me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That isn't what happened.””
“You just said she was his mother!””
“She gave birth to him.””
Claire looked down at Noah.
The boy stood frozen beside her, his face pale.
“Does he know?”” she asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“No.””
Noah looked up.
“Know what?””
Claire's heart broke.
Daniel crouched slightly.
“Noah, there are things you need to understand.””
“Is Rebecca my mom?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire could see the exact moment he realized there was no way to put the secret back.
“Yes.””
Noah stared at him.
“But Mom is Claire.””
Claire felt tears spill down her cheeks.
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Claire raised you. She loved you.””
Noah's voice became small.
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
Daniel looked helpless.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Daniel couldn't answer.
Noah turned toward Claire.
“Did you know?””
Claire shook her head immediately.
“No, sweetheart. I didn't know.””
Noah's shoulders relaxed for one brief second.
Then he looked at Daniel again.
“Why did you lie?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Rebecca was in danger.””
Claire's eyes narrowed.
“That isn't enough.””
Daniel looked at Rodriguez.
“Can I speak privately?””
Rodriguez shook his head.
“Not while your son is missing and not while you're withholding information.””
“I wasn't withholding him.””
“You hid him inside a wall.””
Daniel flinched.
“I was trying to keep him safe.””
Claire looked toward the hidden passage.
“From Rebecca?””
Daniel nodded.
“She came back.””
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
Claire felt her stomach drop.
“Three weeks?””
Daniel nodded.
“She contacted me.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she said if I told anyone, Noah would disappear.””
Claire's expression hardened.
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because I've seen what she's capable of.””
Rodriguez stepped closer.
“Let's start from the beginning.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Rebecca and I were together before I met Claire. She was pregnant when we separated.””
Claire folded her arms.
“Why?””
“She was unstable.””
Rodriguez immediately interrupted.
“Careful with that word.””
Daniel nodded.
“She was unpredictable. She believed people were following her. She became convinced that someone wanted the baby.””
“Did someone?”” Rodriguez asked.
Daniel paused.
“I don't know.””
Claire watched him.
“You've been using fear to explain everything.””
“I am telling you what happened.””
“No. You're telling me what you want us to believe.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You think I wanted this?””
“You built the lie.””
“I built a life.””
“On a lie.””
Daniel's eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than another denial would have.
Rodriguez turned toward Noah.
“Buddy, can you tell me what happened after your dad told you to hide?””
Noah nodded.
“Dad came into my room.””
“When?””
“After school.””
“Today?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Noah looked at Claire.
“It's okay,” she whispered.
“He told me someone might come to the house.””
“Did he tell you who?””
“Rebecca.””
“Did you see her?””
“No.””
“What happened next?””
“Dad took me through the closet.””
Noah pointed toward the hidden passage.
“He told me not to make any noise.””
“Were you scared?””
“Yes.””
“What did you hear?””
Noah looked down.
“Dad was talking to someone.””
Claire's breath caught.
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
“Man or woman?””
“A man.””
Daniel's expression changed.
Rodriguez noticed.
“You know who that was?””
“No.””
“Mr. Bennett.””
“I don't.””
Noah continued.
“The man said Dad owed him.””
Silence.
Claire stared at Daniel.
“Owed him what?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying again.””
“No.””
“Who was the man?””
“I don't know.””
Rodriguez was watching Daniel closely now.
“What else did you hear?””
Noah squeezed Claire's hand.
“He said the truth was buried.””
Daniel looked toward the floor.
“And then?””
“He said Rebecca was going to come for me.””
Claire's skin prickled.
“Did he say where she was?””
Noah nodded.
“He said she was at a hotel.””
“What hotel?””
Noah frowned, trying to remember.
“Something with a lake.””
Daniel suddenly stood.
“That's enough.””
Rodriguez blocked him.
“You don't decide when it's enough.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“My son has been through enough today.””
“You created this situation.””
Daniel stared at him.
Then his phone began ringing.
The screen showed an unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Rodriguez motioned for Daniel to answer.
“Speaker.””
Daniel pressed the button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds there was nothing.
Then a woman's voice came through.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Daniel.””
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel's face went white.
“Rebecca.””
Noah clutched Claire's hand.
The woman laughed quietly.
“So he finally told her.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Where are you?””
There was a pause.
“Claire?””
Daniel looked at her.
The voice continued.
“I've wanted to meet you for a very long time.””
Claire's voice shook.
“Why did you leave Noah?””
Rebecca was silent for a moment.
“I didn't leave him.””
“Then why did Daniel raise him?””
“Because Daniel stole him.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“That isn't true.””
Rebecca's voice hardened.
“You told the hospital I wasn't stable.””
“I protected you.””
“You took my baby.””
“You weren't safe.””
“You had no right!””
Claire stared at Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
Rebecca answered.
“He knows.””
Daniel whispered, “Rebecca, stop.””
“You know exactly what you did.””
Rodriguez motioned for Claire to stay quiet.
“Rebecca, this is Detective Rodriguez. Where are you?””
She laughed again.
“Somewhere you won't find me.””
“Your son is safe.””
“I know.””
Rodriguez frowned.
“You've been watching the house?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
Silence.
Then Rebecca said:
“Because he is my son.””
Noah suddenly stepped forward.
“Are you really my mom?””
Claire's heart stopped.
Daniel reached for him.
But Rebecca heard his voice.
“Oh, Noah.””
Her tone changed immediately.
“I've missed you.””
Noah's eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn't you come back?””
Rebecca's voice broke.
“Because your father made sure I couldn't.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Rebecca, please.””
She ignored him.
“Noah, do you remember the blue house?””
The boy frowned.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Noah?””
“I don't know.””
“You were five.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't talk to him.””
Rebecca's voice became colder.
“Remember the room with the stars on the ceiling?””
Noah's face changed.
“I remember.””
Claire stared at her son.
“What do you remember?””
Noah swallowed.
“A woman.””
Daniel whispered, “No.””
“She sang to me.””
Claire felt her heart break.
“What woman?””
Noah looked at her.
“She smelled like roses.””
Rebecca began crying softly on the phone.
“That was me.””
Daniel grabbed his phone.
“Enough.””
The call ended.
Silence returned.
Claire turned toward Daniel.
“Why doesn't Noah remember her?””
Daniel didn't answer.
“Where was that house?””
Still nothing.
“Where, Daniel?””
He finally spoke.
“Oklahoma.””
Rodriguez looked sharply at him.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“How many?””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Five.””
Rodriguez's expression changed.
Claire understood immediately.
“Noah was five.””
Daniel nodded.
“You took him there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca found out where we lived.””
Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.
“And you lied to me about where you went?””
“Yes.””
“Did she see him?””
Daniel looked up.
“Yes.””
Claire felt sick.
“You let her see her own son.””
“She followed us.””
“And then what happened?””
Daniel's face crumpled.
“She tried to take him.””
“Did she hurt him?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Daniel looked toward Noah.
“She told him to choose between us.””
Noah looked confused.
Claire moved closer to her son.
“What did you choose, buddy?””
Noah's eyes filled with tears.
“I chose you.””
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel began crying.
“But you didn't know,” Claire whispered.
Noah shook his head.
“She told me Dad was bad.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Was she right?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Rodriguez's phone suddenly rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression became serious.
He lowered the phone.
“We found a vehicle.””
Claire stared at him.
“Where?””
“Two streets away.””
“Was Noah inside?””
“No.””
“Then whose vehicle?””
Rodriguez looked directly at Daniel.
“Registered to Rebecca Hale.””
Daniel went completely still.
Claire felt the world shift beneath her feet.
“She was here.””
Rodriguez nodded.
“Apparently.””
Noah looked toward the backyard.
Then suddenly whispered:
“Mom?””
Claire turned.
He wasn't looking at her.
He was looking through the glass door.
Toward the kennel.
Duke had started barking.
Not at the fence.
Not at the street.
At something beside the kennel.
Claire slowly walked outside.
On the ground was a small white envelope.
No stamp.
No address.
Only three words written across the front.
For Claire Bennett.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire stared at it.
It showed Daniel standing beside Rebecca.
But this time, Claire noticed something she hadn't seen before.
Rebecca was holding a newborn baby.
May you like
And written across the bottom of the photograph was a date.
The date was three days after Daniel had told Claire that Noah's mother had died.
