Chapter 3: Rebecca's Secret
Claire could hear the blood pounding in her ears.
The photograph.
The message.
The text on Daniel's phone.
Everything seemed connected now, but the pieces refused to fit together.
Officer Rodriguez held out his hand.
“Mr. Bennett, give me your phone.””
Daniel hesitated.
Claire watched him carefully.
“Daniel.””
He finally handed it over.
Rodriguez read the message again.
“Who sent this?””
“I don't know.””
“Do you have the number saved?””
“No.””
“Has anyone contacted you about Rebecca before?””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“No.””
Claire almost laughed.
It was a terrible sound.
“You're lying again.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I'm not.””
“You know her.””
“Yes.””
“How well?””
He didn't answer.
Rodriguez's voice became firm.
“Mr. Bennett, your ten-year-old son is missing. There is a photograph in his backpack of you with a woman who appears to be connected to whatever you're hiding. Now someone is threatening you and mentioning her by name.””
He paused.
“Start talking.””
Daniel looked toward the house.
For a moment, Claire wondered whether he would finally tell the truth.
Instead, he said, “Rebecca was a friend.””
Claire stared at him.
“A friend?””
“Yes.””
“You hid a photograph of yourself with another woman for eight years, our son somehow had it, and your explanation is that she was a friend?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“It wasn't like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
“She was someone I knew before I met you.””
“That much is obvious.””
“She had problems.””
Claire's voice dropped.
“What kind of problems?””
Daniel glanced at Rodriguez.
“Personal problems.””
Rodriguez folded his arms.
“That's not enough.””
Daniel looked toward the kennel.
Duke was standing rigidly inside, staring at the back fence.
Claire followed the dog's gaze.
Nothing moved.
No one stood there.
But a strange feeling crawled up her spine.
“What happened to Rebecca?”” she asked.
Daniel said nothing.
Claire stepped closer.
“Is she alive?””
Daniel's eyes met hers.
That was enough.
Claire felt the answer before he spoke.
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“I haven't seen her in years.””
“Then why does someone think you know what happened to her?””
“I don't know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it's the truth.””
Rodriguez's radio crackled again.
Another officer called from the front of the property.
“Detective, we've got something.””
Rodriguez looked toward the street.
“I'll be right there.””
He nodded to another officer.
“Stay with the family.””
Then he walked away.
Claire waited until he was out of earshot.
“Where is Noah?””
Daniel looked at her.
“I don't know.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“You've been lying to me all day.””
“I haven't.””
“You knew about the camera footage.””
Daniel looked away.
“You knew the box mattered.””
“I never said that.””
“Your face did.””
He said nothing.
Claire took a breath.
“Tell me what Rebecca has to do with our son.””
Daniel's jaw clenched.
“She has nothing to do with Noah.””
“Then why was her photograph in his backpack?””
“I don't know.””
“Stop saying that.””
“I can't tell you something I don't know.””
Claire stared at him.
Then she noticed his right hand.
It was shaking.
Not dramatically.
Just slightly.
A tiny tremor in his fingers.
It wasn't fear alone.
It was memory.
“You're remembering something,” she said.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Claire's voice softened.
“What happened that night?””
His face changed.
“What night?””
“The night Rebecca disappeared.””
Daniel froze.
Claire saw it.
The moment he realized she'd connected the pieces.
“How do you know she disappeared?””
Claire held up the photograph.
“Because if she's alive, you'd have said so.””
Daniel stared at the photo.
Then he whispered, “She didn't disappear.””
Claire waited.
“She left.””
“When?””
“Eight years ago.””
“Where did she go?””
“I don't know.””
“Why does that message say I promised he would never know?””
Daniel looked at the ground.
“It wasn't written to me.””
Claire's eyes widened.
“What?””
“The message on the photograph.””
He swallowed.
“It wasn't addressed to me.””
“Then who was it for?””
Daniel looked up.
“I don't know.””
Claire felt anger rising again.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Daniel remained silent.
She turned away from him.
Across the patio, the custody papers fluttered in the breeze.
The top page lifted.
Claire walked over and pressed it flat.
For months she had believed the custody case was about Daniel's behavior.
Now she wondered whether it was about something much older.
Something that had begun before she had ever entered his life.
A sound came from upstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Claire looked up.
“Did you hear that?””
Daniel nodded.
They both stared toward the second floor.
One officer immediately moved inside.
Claire followed.
The officer checked Noah's room.
“Nothing.””
Then he pointed toward the hallway.
“Wait.””
Everyone stopped.
A faint sound came from the linen closet.
A soft scraping.
Claire's heart jumped.
“It's coming from there.””
The officer opened the door.
Towels and blankets filled the shelves.
He pulled everything out.
Nothing.
Then Claire noticed a loose panel behind the lowest shelf.
“That's not supposed to be there.””
The officer touched it.
The panel shifted.
Daniel appeared behind them.
“Don't.””
Claire turned.
“Why?””
Daniel stared at the panel.
“Because there could be electrical wiring.””
The officer looked at him.
“Stand back.””
He pulled the panel free.
Behind it was a narrow cavity in the wall.
Inside sat a small black case.
Claire recognized it instantly.
The same type of metal case she'd found beside the kennel.
She looked at Daniel.
“You said you didn't know about the box.””
“I said I didn't know what you'd found.””
“You knew.””
Daniel backed away.
The officer removed the case.
It was locked.
Then they heard another noise.
A faint tapping.
From inside the wall.
Everyone froze.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Claire stepped closer.
“That's not the pipes.””
The officer placed a hand against the wall.
“Could be from another room.””
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Three more times.
Claire's stomach twisted.
“It's Noah.””
The officer immediately called for backup.
They began checking the adjoining room.
Daniel suddenly grabbed Claire's arm.
“Don't.””
She tore herself free.
“What is wrong with you?””
His voice broke.
“Please.””
“Please what?””
“Don't open it.””
The officer looked at him.
“Open what?””
Daniel said nothing.
The tapping stopped.
The silence was worse.
Claire felt tears gathering in her eyes.
“Daniel, what did you do?””
“I didn't hurt him.””
“You've said nothing that tells me that.””
“I swear.””
“Where is he?””
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you afraid of that wall?””
Daniel's lips parted.
Before he could answer, the sound came again.
Not tapping this time.
A whisper.
Muffled through the wall.
“Mom.””
Claire's knees almost buckled.
“Noah!””
She rushed toward the wall.
The officer caught her before she could tear at the panel.
“Don't. We need to make sure it's safe.””
“Noah!”” Claire cried.
A faint answer came through.
“Mom!””
“I’m here!””
Daniel stepped backward.
His eyes were locked on the hidden compartment.
The officer grabbed a tool from his belt.
“Everyone move away.””
He pried the remaining panel loose.
The cavity behind it extended farther than anyone expected.
It wasn't part of the original wall.
It was a hidden passage.
Dust covered the floor.
At the far end was a small door.
And beneath that door, light.
Claire couldn't breathe.
“He's in there.””
Two officers entered first.
Claire waited at the doorway.
Then she heard shouting.
“Found him!””
She covered her mouth.
An officer emerged carrying Noah.
He was frightened but conscious.
Claire ran to him.
“Oh, baby.””
Noah wrapped both arms around her.
She held him so tightly he began to cry.
“I thought I wasn't going to find you,” he whispered.
“Where were you?””
He pointed behind them.
“In there.””
Claire stroked his hair.
“Who put you there?””
Noah looked over her shoulder.
His eyes landed on Daniel.
His entire body stiffened.
Claire felt it.
“Was it Dad?””
Noah didn't answer.
“Sweetheart.””
Noah's lips trembled.
“He told me to hide.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I told you to stay there because someone was looking for you.””
Claire turned on him.
“Who?””
Daniel looked helplessly toward the officers.
Noah began crying harder.
“He said she was coming.””
“Who was coming?”” Claire asked.
Noah whispered the name.
“Rebecca.””
Daniel's face went completely white.
Claire stared at her son.
“Did you see her?””
Noah shook his head.
“No.””
“Then how do you know her name?””
“Dad showed me the picture.””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Noah suddenly reached into the pocket of his shorts.
“I found this too.””
He pulled out a tiny flash drive.
Claire stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Dad's desk.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Give it to me.””
Noah immediately hid behind Claire.
The officers blocked Daniel's path.
“Don't move.””
Daniel stopped.
Claire held out her hand.
“Noah, give it to Mom.””
He placed the flash drive in her palm.
“It has a video.””
“What kind of video?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel whispered, “Claire, please.””
She looked at him.
His eyes were full of desperation.
“For once,” she said, “you're going to tell me the truth.””
She turned toward the officers.
“We need to see what's on it.””
Rodriguez returned just as Claire finished speaking.
He looked at the flash drive.
Then at Daniel.
“Maybe we finally have something concrete.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don't understand what you're about to uncover.””
Rodriguez's expression hardened.
“Then help me understand.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
Then at Noah.
Finally, he whispered four words.
“Rebecca is Noah's mother.””
The world seemed to stop.
Claire stared at him.
Noah looked confused.
And somewhere outside, the garage security camera continued recording everything.
The custody battle had just become something none of them had imagined.
May you like
Because Claire hadn't been fighting to protect her husband's son.
She had been raising the child of a woman Daniel had spent eight years pretending was gone.
