Chapter 8: The Night the Blue House Burned

Noah's answer left Claire unable to speak.

Ethan had been inside their house.

Last month.

And somehow Daniel had known.

Claire turned slowly toward her husband.

“You knew he came here.””

Daniel looked down.

“Noah told me someone had been in his room.””

“You knew it was Ethan.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

Claire's voice shook.

“You suspected that a man everyone believed had disappeared had entered our house, and you did nothing?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By lying?””

“I didn't know what else to do.””

Claire stared at him.

“That sentence is becoming the anthem of this family.””

Rodriguez stepped between them.

“Let's stop arguing and focus on the boy.””

He knelt in front of Noah.

“Buddy, when Ethan came into your room, what did he say?””

Noah rubbed his eyes.

“He said he was sorry.””

“For what?””

“I don't know.””

“Did he touch you?””

“No.””

“Did he threaten you?””

Noah shook his head.

“He asked me if I remembered the blue house.””

Claire felt a chill.

“What did you tell him?””

“I said no.””

“And what did he say?””

“He said I would.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rodriguez looked at him.

“What is the blue house?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Claire stepped closer.

“Tell him.””

Daniel stared at Noah.

Then he sat heavily in one of the patio chairs.

“The blue house was where Rebecca lived before Noah was born.””

“Where?””

“Outside Dallas.””

“Address?””

“I don't remember.””

Claire's expression hardened.

“You remembered every detail of your gambling debts, every account you used, and every lie you told me, but you don't remember where your son's mother lived?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“It's gone.””

“What happened to it?””

“It burned.””

“When?””

“March 14, 2018.””

Claire looked at Noah.

The same date.

His real birthday.

The photograph.

The blue house.

Everything seemed to circle the same night.

Rodriguez asked, “Who burned it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Ethan.””

Claire stared at him.

“You said Ethan was trying to protect Rebecca.””

“I said he was dangerous.””

“Which is it?””

“Both.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked toward the distant tree line.

“The night Noah was born, Rebecca called me.””

“What did she say?””

“That Ethan had found her.””

“So you went there.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“Rebecca was terrified. She had already packed a bag for the baby.””

“Did she want to leave with you?””

“She wanted to disappear.””

Claire's jaw tightened.

“But instead, you took the baby.””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“You always say that.””

Daniel looked at her.

“She gave Noah to me.””

“Temporarily.””

“Yes.””

“And then the house burned.””

Daniel nodded.

“I had taken Noah to the car when I heard shouting.””

“Whose?””

“Rebecca and Ethan.””

“What did they argue about?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Records. Accounts. Names.””

Rodriguez asked, “And where was Ethan?””

“Inside the house.””

“Where was Rebecca?””

“Inside too.””

Claire's eyes widened.

“You left them both in there?””

“I thought she was coming out.””

“But she didn't.””

“No.””

“Did you go back?””

“I tried.””

“And?””

“There was too much smoke.””

Claire felt sick.

“So everyone thought Rebecca died.””

“Yes.””

“And you let them think that.””

“I believed she was dead.””

“But later you found out she wasn't.””

Daniel nodded.

“When?””

“Two years later.””

Claire looked at him.

“You found her?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

“A letter.””

“From her?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

Daniel stared at his hands.

“She said she was alive, but if I tried to contact her, she'd take Noah and disappear.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“So you used that as an excuse to keep him.””

“I was scared.””

“You were selfish.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The admission was quiet.

Maybe because after eight years, there was no point pretending otherwise.

Rodriguez asked, “Why would Rebecca hide from her own child?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I never understood that.””

“You're still lying,” Claire said.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“You did understand.””

Claire pointed toward the photograph.

“She trusted me.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She knew you'd built a story around her.””

“Yes.””

“She knew you'd convinced everyone she had abandoned Noah.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew I would hate her if I believed it.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“She wanted you to love him.””

Claire stared at him.

“You manipulated me into becoming his mother.””

“I wanted him to have someone who loved him.””

“And you decided I was useful.””

“No.””

“You decided I was safe.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“That may be the cruelest thing you've ever done.””

Noah stepped closer.

“Mom?””

Claire immediately turned.

“Come here.””

He wrapped his arms around her waist.

She knelt beside him.

“Do you remember the blue house?””

Noah hesitated.

“A little.””

“What do you remember?””

“A bedroom.””

“Was it yours?””

He nodded.

“There were stars.””

Claire remembered Rebecca mentioning the ceiling during the phone call.

“What else?””

“A window.””

“What was outside?””

“Trees.””

“Anything else?””

Noah closed his eyes.

“A red truck.””

Daniel suddenly stood.

“What?””

Noah opened his eyes.

“A red truck.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“What about it?””

“It was outside.””

“Was someone in it?””

Noah nodded.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel's hands began shaking.

Claire noticed.

“You know.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“The red truck belonged to Ethan.””

Rodriguez's head snapped toward him.

“Why is that important?””

“Because he wasn't supposed to be there.””

“Why?””

“Because I had already seen him.””

“When?””

“The night before.””

Claire frowned.

“At the blue house?””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw the truck parked outside.””

“You didn't tell the police?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because Ethan was afraid.””

Claire stared at him.

“You're protecting him.””

“No.””

“You're still protecting someone.””

Daniel looked toward the street.

“I was protecting Rebecca.””

Rodriguez's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then looked toward Claire.

“We found the sedan.””

Claire's heart jumped.

“Rebecca?””

“No. The vehicle was abandoned.””

“Where?””

“Three blocks from here.””

Rodriguez hesitated.

“The trunk was open.””

Claire immediately understood.

“Was there blood?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“A suitcase.””

Inside the suitcase were clothes, a burner phone, and an old hospital bracelet.

Rodriguez held up a photograph taken at the scene.

Claire stared.

The bracelet had one name printed on it.

*NOAH BENNETT.*

And a date.

March 14, 2018.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Why does Rebecca have a hospital bracelet with his fake name?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Claire's eyes hardened.

“Enough.””

She turned to Rodriguez.

“There is something else you're not telling us.””

He hesitated.

“I don't have the whole picture yet.””

“What did you find in the suitcase?””

Rodriguez looked at Daniel.

“An envelope.””

Claire felt a familiar dread.

“What does it say?””

“It was addressed to you.””

He handed it over.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a handwritten page.

Claire,

By the time you read this, Daniel has probably told you enough to make you hate him.

Claire glanced at Daniel.

Her hands trembled.

But hatred will only make you blind.

There is one truth left.

Noah's blood matters less than what happened the night he was born.

You need to know who carried him out of the blue house.

Claire's breathing stopped.

The letter continued.

It wasn't Daniel.

Claire looked up.

Daniel had gone completely pale.

Rodriguez asked, “What's it say?””

Claire read the next line silently.

Then she felt her knees weaken.

Ethan carried Noah.

Noah looked frightened.

“But Dad said Ethan wasn't there.””

Claire turned toward Daniel.

“He carried Noah?””

Daniel couldn't speak.

Claire's voice became a whisper.

“You saw Ethan holding him.””

Daniel finally nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell everyone Rebecca was gone?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because when I came back…”

His voice broke.

“He was gone.””

“Who?””

“Ethan.””

“Rebecca?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Rebecca was still inside.””

Claire stared at him.

“And Ethan had the baby.””

Daniel nodded.

Rodriguez immediately stepped forward.

“So how did you get Noah?””

Daniel's face twisted with pain.

“Ethan came back.””

“When?””

“Hours later.””

“With Noah?””

“No.””

“Then where was the baby?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“I found Noah outside the hospital.””

Claire froze.

“You didn't take him from the hospital.””

“No.””

“You found him.””

“Yes.””

“Who left him there?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then Noah spoke.

“Mom.””

Claire turned toward him.

“I remember.””

“What?””

“The fire.””

Everyone stared.

Noah's breathing became faster.

“I remember someone carrying me.””

Claire knelt.

“Who?””

“A man.””

“Was it Dad?””

Noah shook his head.

“No.””

“Ethan?””

Another hesitation.

“No.””

Claire's heart pounded.

“Then who?””

Noah looked past her.

Toward Daniel.

His expression suddenly changed.

“He looked like Dad.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Claire stood.

“What does that mean?””

Noah's eyes widened.

“I remember two men.””

Rodriguez reached for his notebook.

“Two men at the blue house?””

Noah nodded.

“They both looked like Dad.””

Daniel's face went white.

Claire stared at her husband.

“Daniel.””

He backed away.

“There were never two.””

Noah whispered:

“There were.””

A sudden crash came from the garage.

Everyone turned.

The side door slammed open.

Duke began barking wildly.

Rodriguez drew his weapon and moved toward the sound.

Claire pulled Noah behind her.

Daniel stood frozen.

Then a figure appeared in the garage doorway.

A man.

Dark jacket.

Blood on one sleeve.

He raised both hands.

“Don't shoot.””

Claire couldn't breathe.

The man stepped into the light.

He looked almost exactly like Daniel.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

Same dark hair.

And from behind Claire came Noah's terrified whisper.

“That's him.””

The man looked directly at the boy.

“I'm sorry, Noah.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“Michael.””

The stranger slowly smiled.

“Hello, brother.””

May you like

And Claire realized the secret had never been about one man.

There had always been two Bennetts.
