Chapter 7: The Call From the Dead

The phone kept ringing.

No one moved.

Claire stared at the screen.

*Ethan Hale.*

The name seemed impossible.

For years, Daniel had spoken about Ethan as though he belonged to a buried chapter of his life, a dangerous man who had vanished after the confrontation at the abandoned ranch.

Yet now his name was glowing on Daniel's phone.

Alive.

Calling.

Waiting.

“Answer it,” Claire said.

Daniel shook his head.

“Claire, you don't understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Rodriguez held out his hand.

“Mr. Bennett, put the call on speaker.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What if he's watching?””

“Then we'll know.””

Daniel's thumb hovered over the screen.

The ringing stopped.

For one second, everyone exhaled.

Then the phone rang again.

Same name.

Same number.

This time Daniel answered.

“Ethan.””

A man's breathing came through the speaker.

Slow.

Controlled.

Then a rough voice said, “You finally found the box.””

Claire felt a chill move through her.

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“I wondered how long it would take.””

Rodriguez stepped closer to the phone.

“This is Detective Rodriguez with the Dallas Police Department. We need to know where you are.””

A quiet laugh.

“You still think this is a police matter.””

“It became one when a child disappeared.””

“You found the child.””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Claire's hands curled into fists.

“You threatened my family.””

The breathing stopped.

Then Ethan answered.

“I didn't threaten your family.””

“You sent messages.””

“I sent warnings.””

“You sent someone to our house.””

“No.””

Claire's voice sharpened.

“Then who was the woman on the camera?””

“Rebecca.””

Daniel shut his eyes.

Claire stared at him.

“She was there?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“With you, apparently.””

Ethan laughed.

“She wanted you to see her.””

Claire looked at the dark security monitor.

“So she was watching us.””

“She has been watching for a long time.””

Daniel spoke.

“Where is she?””

“You're still worried about Rebecca?””

“I need to know.””

“You should be worried about Noah.””

Claire immediately pulled the boy closer.

“What do you want from him?””

“I don't want anything from Noah.””

“Then why are you calling?””

“To tell you the truth Daniel refused to tell.””

Daniel stepped toward the phone.

“No.””

Ethan continued.

“March 14, 2018.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“The night the baby was born.””

Claire felt her pulse rise.

“What happened that night?””

Silence.

Then Ethan said, “Rebecca wasn't supposed to survive.””

Daniel looked down.

Claire stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan answered.

“She was supposed to die before sunrise.””

Noah looked up at Claire.

She put a hand over his ear.

Rodriguez noticed.

“Who was trying to kill her?”” he asked.

Ethan said, “Daniel.””

Claire froze.

Daniel shook his head violently.

“No.””

“You locked her in that hospital room.””

“I was protecting her.””

“You cut off her phone.””

“She was being followed.””

“You changed her medical records.””

“I had to.””

“You told the doctors she was delusional.””

“I was trying to keep them from finding her.””

Ethan's voice hardened.

“You always have an explanation.””

Claire turned toward Daniel.

“Did you try to kill Rebecca?””

“No.””

“Did you alter her records?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Did you tell the hospital she wasn't mentally stable?””

“Yes.””

Claire's expression broke.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her helplessly.

“Because if they believed her, they would ask questions.””

“Questions about what?””

Ethan answered.

“Me.””

Rodriguez frowned.

“You?””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“You're beginning to understand.””

Claire stepped closer to the phone.

“Who are you?””

There was a pause.

“I'm Rebecca's brother.””

“You're Ethan.””

“Yes.””

“But you were supposed to be missing.””

“I wanted people to think I was dead.””

Daniel muttered, “You should have stayed that way.””

Claire turned toward him.

“What did you do to him?””

“Nothing.””

Ethan interrupted.

“He left me at the ranch.””

Claire stared.

“You told us Ethan was released from your custody.””

“He was.””

“You abandoned him.””

“I had no choice.””

“You always have a choice,” Claire said.

Daniel looked at her.

“This was never about the money.””

Ethan spoke again.

“No.””

“It was about Rebecca.””

“No.””

Claire frowned.

“Then what?””

Ethan's answer came slowly.

“It was about Noah.””

Everyone went silent.

Ethan continued.

“Before Noah was born, Rebecca discovered something.””

“What?””

“She found out Daniel wasn't the man he claimed to be.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“What did she discover?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Ethan said, “Ask him who paid for this house.””

Claire's face tightened.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Ask.””

She looked around the backyard.

The immaculate patio.

The enormous house.

The pool equipment.

The luxury SUV.

The life Daniel had always presented as the result of his success.

“Who paid for this house?””

Daniel stared at her.

“My business.””

“What business?””

“Investments.””

“That's not an answer.””

Ethan laughed.

“Tell her.””

Daniel's silence grew heavier.

Claire whispered, “Daniel.””

“I received money.””

“From whom?””

“Ethan.””

Claire's face went cold.

“You said the money was from investments.””

“It was complicated.””

“You built this house with his money?””

“Not directly.””

“Then how?””

“Through shell companies.””

Rodriguez immediately reached for his notebook.

“How much?””

Daniel hesitated.

“About two hundred thousand.””

Ethan corrected him.

“Four hundred eighty.””

Claire turned toward Daniel.

“Four hundred eighty thousand dollars?””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I repaid part of it.””

“Part?””

“I was going to repay everything.””

Ethan laughed.

“You were going to disappear with my money.””

“No.””

“You changed your name on the accounts.””

“To protect Rebecca.””

“You changed the beneficiary on the life insurance policy.””

Claire's expression changed.

“Life insurance?””

Daniel looked at her.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Ethan said, “He took out a policy on Rebecca.””

Claire's voice barely worked.

“Daniel?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before Noah was born.””

“Why?””

“I wasn't planning to hurt her.””

“Then why insure her life?””

“Because she was sick.””

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“That isn't what you told me.””

“She needed coverage.””

“For what?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Ethan said, “Because Daniel knew Rebecca was going to disappear.””

Claire looked at the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan's voice softened.

“It means your husband had a plan.””

Daniel stepped away.

“Stop.””

“You can't stop it anymore.””

“Rebecca is alive.””

“Yes.””

“You know where she is.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Ethan laughed.

“Ask Claire.””

Claire frowned.

“Ask me what?””

“Why Rebecca trusts you.””

“I've never met her.””

“You have.””

Claire's heart stopped.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“Look at the photograph again.””

She grabbed the picture from the table.

The photograph showed Rebecca holding the newborn baby.

Daniel stood beside her.

Claire studied the background.

A hospital room.

A window.

A chair near the wall.

Then she noticed a fourth person reflected faintly in the glass.

A woman.

Long blonde hair.

Standing outside the room.

Claire stared.

“No.””

Daniel went rigid.

“What?””

Claire brought the photograph closer.

The reflection was blurry, but she recognized the coat.

She recognized the shape of the face.

And suddenly a memory surfaced.

Eight years earlier.

Before she and Daniel married.

Claire had volunteered at a Dallas hospital.

She had delivered paperwork to the maternity ward during a charity event.

There had been a frightened young woman inside one of the rooms.

A man had been arguing with a nurse.

And Claire had been asked to stay with a newborn for several minutes.

She remembered the baby.

She remembered the tiny fingers gripping hers.

She remembered the mother whispering one sentence.

Please don't let him take my baby.

Claire's breath caught.

“Oh my God.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“You remember.””

Claire slowly turned toward him.

“That was Rebecca.””

He nodded.

“You knew I had met her.””

“Yes.””

“You knew.””

“I found out later.””

“You brought me into this family knowing I had held her baby.””

“She couldn't care for him.””

“She begged me to protect him.””

Daniel's face crumpled.

“And you never told me.””

“I was afraid you'd remember.””

Claire stepped backward.

“You didn't choose me because you loved me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn't true.””

“You chose me because Rebecca trusted me.””

“No.””

“Did you marry me because you knew I could raise Noah?””

Daniel didn't answer.

That silence destroyed whatever remained of Claire's trust.

Noah stepped forward.

“Mom?””

Claire looked at him.

His face was terrified.

She immediately knelt.

“I'm here.””

“Is Dad bad?””

Claire couldn't answer.

Daniel crouched too.

“Noah, I love you.””

“Did you steal me?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I made terrible choices.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

Noah began crying.

Claire pulled him close.

The phone remained on the table.

Ethan spoke again.

“There's one thing neither of them knows.””

Rodriguez looked at the device.

“What?””

“The DNA test.””

Claire lifted her head.

“What DNA test?””

Ethan said, “Rebecca had one performed before she disappeared.””

Daniel's face went white.

“Ethan.””

“The results are in the red folder.””

Claire looked at the documents scattered across the patio table.

There was no DNA report.

Ethan continued.

“The result proves Noah isn't Daniel's son.””

Claire's heart stopped.

Noah looked at her.

“Whose son am I?””

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.

“Mine.””

The line went dead.

Claire couldn't move.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Rodriguez looked between them.

And from somewhere beyond the backyard fence came the unmistakable sound of a car accelerating away.

Claire ran toward the gate.

She reached it just in time to see a dark sedan disappear around the corner.

But she noticed something else.

A white envelope had been pushed beneath the gate.

She picked it up.

There was no name on it.

Only one sentence.

The DNA report is not the dangerous part.

Claire opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Ethan.

Standing beside Noah.

Taken only two weeks earlier.

The photograph had been taken inside Claire's own house.

On the back, someone had written:

Ask Noah what he remembers about the night the blue house burned.

Claire stared at the picture.

Then she looked at her son.

Noah's face had gone pale.

“You know this man,” she whispered.

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Where have you seen him?””

Noah looked toward Daniel.

Then toward the hidden passage.

Finally, he whispered:

“He came to my room last month.””

Daniel's face collapsed.

Claire felt the last piece of certainty leave her.

Because Ethan Hale hadn't just been watching their family.

May you like

He had been inside their house.

And Noah had remembered him all along.
