Chapter 9: The Enemy Inside the Family

Vanessa returned to the Oleso mansion that night.

Not as the confident woman who had left.

Not as the woman who believed she controlled everything.

She returned looking like someone who had just discovered her entire life was built on a lie.

Daniel was waiting.

He knew she would come.

“You talked to your mother.””

Vanessa stopped.

“How do you know?””

“Because I talked to Clara Bennett.””

The color left her face.

“So she’s alive.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked away.

For once, she had no perfect answer.

No clever explanation.

No performance.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I know about Adrian.””

Her eyes moved to him.

“What else do you know?””

“That he was your father.””

Silence.

“And that my father tried to stop him.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Daniel held up the letter.

“Your entire revenge was built on a lie.””

Vanessa stared at the paper.

Her hands shook.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at him.

And for the first time, Daniel saw something he never expected.

Pain.

Not anger.

Not manipulation.

Pain.

“I spent my whole life believing one thing.””

Her voice cracked.

“That your family destroyed mine.””

Daniel said nothing.

“My father told me your father betrayed him.””

She laughed weakly.

“He told me we lost everything because of him.””

“And you believed him.””

“I was a child.””

Daniel softened slightly.

Because he understood that.

Children believed the people they loved.

Even when those people lied.

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Lily.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What about her?””

“I hurt her.””

The admission surprised him.

“Yes.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“Why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because every time I looked at her…”

She stopped.

“Every time I saw you love her…”

A tear fell.

“I remembered everything I lost.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Your pain does not excuse what you did.””

“I know.””

And that was the first honest thing Vanessa had said.

Upstairs, Lily stood near the doorway.

She had heard everything.

Maria found her there.

“Sweetheart?””

Lily turned.

“Is Mrs. Crowe sad?””

Maria looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Is she still bad?””

Maria didn’t know how to answer.

People were not always simple.

Some people hurt others because they were hurt.

Some people chose to stop.

Some didn’t.

“I don’t know.””

Lily looked down.

“But she hurt me.””

“Yes.””

“And I’m still scared.””

Maria hugged her.

“That’s okay.””

The little girl nodded.

After a moment, she whispered:

“Can people be sorry and still be wrong?””

Maria smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

Downstairs, Daniel received a message.

From his investigator.

He opened it.

His face changed.

*Mr. Oleso. We found the missing letter from your father’s office.*

A second message followed.

*But there is something else.*

Daniel typed:

*What?*

The reply came.

*The person who stole it was not Vanessa.*

Daniel stared.

Another message appeared.

*It was someone inside your mansion.*

His heart sank.

Someone had been helping.

Someone close.

Someone who had access.

Daniel slowly looked around the room.

The mansion suddenly felt different.

Less like a home.

More like a battlefield.

Because Vanessa might not have been the only person hiding secrets.

May you like

And whoever took that letter…

Had been watching the entire time.
