Chapter 2: The Lie She Built

Maria barely had time to react.

She ended the call immediately and slipped the phone into the pocket of her apron.

The door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly calm.

Almost as if she had never been cruel to a child moments before.

“Maria.””

The maid forced herself to look up.

“Yes, Mrs. Crowe?””

Vanessa stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“I was wondering where you disappeared to.””

“I was organizing the supplies.””

Vanessa glanced around the small room.

She knew Maria was lying.

And Maria knew Vanessa knew.

That was the frightening thing about Vanessa.

She didn’t need to shout.

She didn’t need to threaten.

She simply watched.

She studied people until she found the thing they feared most.

“You’ve worked here a long time,” Vanessa said.

“Yes, ma’am.””

“Eleven years, right?””

Maria nodded.

Vanessa smiled.

“Daniel trusts you.””

The maid said nothing.

“He always talks about how loyal you are.””

Maria felt a chill.

Why was she saying this?

Vanessa walked closer.

“But loyalty is complicated.””

She picked up a folded napkin from the shelf.

“Sometimes people think they’re protecting someone.””

She looked directly at Maria.

“When really, they’re just causing trouble.””

Maria kept her expression neutral.

“I don’t understand.””

Vanessa smiled wider.

“I think you do.””

The room felt smaller.

“You saw something.””

Maria’s heart jumped.

But she stayed quiet.

Vanessa leaned against the counter.

“Didn’t you?””

A normal person might have confessed.

A normal person might have panicked.

But Maria had survived eleven years in a wealthy household.

She understood something.

People like Vanessa wanted reactions.

They wanted fear.

Fear made people careless.

So Maria simply lowered her eyes.

“I saw nothing unusual.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked annoyed.

Only slightly.

But Maria noticed.

“Interesting.””

Vanessa walked toward the door.

“You know, Maria, Daniel has been under a lot of stress lately.””

The maid looked up.

“He doesn’t need unnecessary drama.””

Maria’s hands curled into fists.

“Of course.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Good.””

Then she left.

Maria waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Only when she heard Vanessa’s footsteps disappear did she finally breathe.

But the conversation had confirmed something.

Vanessa knew.

She suspected.

And now she would be more careful.

Maria hurried upstairs.

She needed to see Lily.

The little girl was sitting on the edge of her bed when Maria entered.

The room was decorated beautifully.

Stuffed animals.

Books.

A small white piano.

Everything a child could want.

Except safety.

“Miss Lily?””

The girl looked up.

Her eyes were tired.

“Maria?””

The maid knelt beside her.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Lily immediately hugged her.

The little girl tried to be brave.

But the moment she felt someone caring about her, all the pain came out.

“I didn’t do anything wrong.””

Maria’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“She said Daddy doesn’t want me anymore.””

Maria froze.

“What?””

Lily wiped her face.

“She said after Mommy died, Daddy only keeps me because he feels guilty.””

Maria’s heart broke.

Lily’s mother had passed away two years earlier.

Daniel had never recovered.

He worked constantly because being home reminded him of everything he lost.

But he loved Lily.

Everyone knew that.

“She said I’m a burden.””

Maria gently held the child’s hands.

“Listen to me.””

Lily looked at her.

“Your father loves you more than anything.””

“How do you know?””

“Because I’ve seen him.””

Maria smiled sadly.

“I’ve seen him come home after midnight just to kiss your forehead because he thought you were asleep.””

Lily’s lips trembled.

“He did?””

“Yes.””

For the first time that day, a tiny bit of hope appeared in the child’s eyes.

Then Maria heard something.

A sound.

A camera shutter.

She turned quickly.

Nothing.

Only the empty hallway.

But she felt it.

Someone was watching.

Three hours later, Daniel Oleso landed at the private airport near his estate.

He had canceled a billion-dollar business meeting.

He had ignored twenty calls from executives.

None of it mattered.

Not after Maria’s words.

His daughter was not safe.

His driver barely finished opening the car door before Daniel stepped out.

“Take me home.””

The ride felt endless.

His mind replayed every moment he had missed.

Every breakfast he skipped.

Every bedtime story he promised to read later.

He had told himself he was building a better future for Lily.

But what if he had failed to protect her in the present?

When the car arrived, Daniel noticed something immediately.

The mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

Vanessa was waiting near the entrance.

She smiled.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

Something about her expression bothered him.

“Where is Lily?””

“She’s upstairs.””

“Why didn’t she come down?””

Vanessa sighed.

There it was.

The performance.

“She’s been difficult lately.””

Daniel’s eyes sharpened.

“Difficult?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa walked closer.

“She’s been emotional. Crying. Making accusations.””

“What accusations?””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“Asking me why you aren’t home.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Because that part was true.

But then Vanessa added:

“She even told me she hates me.””

Daniel looked away.

Could Lily really have said that?

Before he could answer, Maria appeared at the top of the stairs.

Their eyes met.

The maid looked terrified.

Daniel understood instantly.

Something was wrong.

“Maria.””

Vanessa turned.

“Maria?””

The maid slowly walked down.

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell me.””

Maria opened her mouth.

But Vanessa interrupted.

“Daniel, I think we should discuss this privately.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Maria. Tell me.””

The entire room became silent.

The maid looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

Then back at Daniel.

“Mr. Oleso…”

Her voice shook.

“I saw something today.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

And that was enough.

“What did you see?””

Maria took a deep breath.

Then she spoke.

“Your daughter was forced to eat her meal from the floor.””

Daniel went completely still.

Vanessa immediately laughed.

A fake, shocked laugh.

“That’s ridiculous.””

But Daniel wasn’t looking at Vanessa anymore.

He was looking at Maria.

“Explain.””

The maid’s voice broke.

“She was eating from the dog bowl.””

The silence that followed felt like thunder.

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

And for the first time since he returned home…

He looked at the woman he planned to marry like he didn’t know her at all.
