Chapter 11: The Butler’s Confession
Daniel stood in the library, unable to believe what he was hearing.
Thomas Reed.
The man who had been part of his family for decades.
The man who had carried him as a child.
The man who had held Lily when she was a baby.
Had been hiding secrets.
“How long have you known?””
Thomas looked down.
“Since before you were born.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“That’s not an answer.””
The old butler sighed.
“Your father discovered what Adrian was doing years before anyone else.””
“And Elena helped him.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Then everything fell apart.””
Daniel waited.
“Your uncle knew he was exposed.””
Thomas continued.
“He was desperate.””
“What did he do?””
“He threatened people.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Who?””
“Everyone who could hurt him.””
A terrible realization entered Daniel’s mind.
“Your father?””
Thomas nodded.
“Elena?””
Another nod.
“Anyone who knew the truth.””
Daniel walked away.
“So my father spent years hiding because he was afraid.””
“Yes.””
“But why hide from me?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Because you were young.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“I was an adult when he died.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“Your father believed that if you knew everything, you would go after Adrian’s family.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And?””
“He was afraid you would become just like him.””
The words stayed in the air.
Daniel thought about that.
His father had spent years fighting a battle.
And maybe he feared his son would inherit the anger.
Thomas finally revealed what he had hidden.
The missing letter wasn’t just a confession.
It was a warning.
“Your father wrote that letter because he knew someone might try to continue Adrian’s plan.””
Daniel frowned.
“Continue?””
“Yes.””
“Adrian is dead.””
Thomas nodded.
“But his influence wasn’t.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Someone is still working for him?””
“I don’t know.””
“Thomas.””
The butler closed his eyes.
“I believe so.””
Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in a hotel room.
She stared at her reflection.
For years, she had imagined this moment differently.
She imagined Daniel discovering the truth.
She imagined him realizing his family destroyed hers.
She imagined him begging for forgiveness.
But now?
Now she wasn’t sure what she wanted.
Because the person she hated might not have been guilty.
And the person she trusted most—her own father—might have been the real monster.
Her phone rang.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you get this number?””
The voice laughed.
“You really thought you escaped?””
Vanessa stood.
“Who is this?””
“You know exactly who.””
Her face went pale.
“Impossible.””
A pause.
Then:
“You should have stayed away from Daniel Oleso.””
Vanessa’s hand tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?””
“The same thing everyone wants.””
“What?””
“Control.””
The call ended.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Because she recognized the voice.
And that meant one terrifying thing.
Someone from the past had returned.
At the mansion, Daniel entered Lily’s room.
She was drawing again.
This time, the picture had four people.
Daniel.
Lily.
Maria.
And Vanessa.
Daniel noticed.
“Why did you draw her?””
Lily looked down.
“She was mean.””
Daniel sat beside her.
“But?””
The little girl thought.
“She was also sad.””
Daniel looked at his daughter.
Children saw things adults ignored.
“You’re very kind.””
Lily shrugged.
“I just don’t want people to be hurt.””
The words hit him.
Because Lily had every reason to hate Vanessa.
But she didn’t.
She understood pain.
Maybe better than anyone.
Daniel hugged her.
“I’m proud of you.””
After she fell asleep, Daniel returned downstairs.
Maria was waiting.
“Mr. Oleso.””
“Yes?””
She looked nervous.
“There is something I never told you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“Your father left another message.””
His expression changed.
“What message?””
Maria reached into her pocket.
A small piece of paper.
“I found it years ago.””
Daniel took it.
The handwriting was his father’s.
Only one sentence.
*Trust the person who was hurt, but distrust the person who claims they are saving you.*
Daniel read it again.
And again.
Because suddenly he understood.
His father wasn’t warning him about Vanessa.
May you like
He was warning him about someone else.
Someone pretending to help.
