Chapter 6: The Daughter’s Last Warning
Daniel didn’t sleep.
Not that night.
Not the night after.
Every answer created three more questions.
His father.
Vanessa.
Elena Crowe.
The missing records.
The old photograph.
Everything connected.
But he still couldn’t see the entire picture.
At 3:00 a.m., Daniel sat alone in his study.
The room smelled like old books and expensive leather.
On the wall was a portrait of his father.
A man everyone respected.
A man Daniel had spent his entire life trying to impress.
“Dad…”
He whispered the word.
“Who were you really?””
A knock interrupted him.
He turned.
Maria stood at the door.
“You’re still awake.””
“So are you.””
She smiled faintly.
“I was worried.””
Daniel looked down.
“Did my father ever mention the Crowe family?””
Maria thought.
Then slowly shook her head.
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
“I am.””
She paused.
“But there is something.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“Your father had an old office in the east wing.””
Daniel frowned.
“The room that was locked?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Maria hesitated.
“Your father told everyone never to enter.””
Daniel stood.
“And after he died?””
“The room stayed locked.””
A strange feeling moved through him.
“Where is the key?””
Maria looked nervous.
“Mr. Oleso…”
“Where?””
She took a breath.
“I found it.””
Daniel stared.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I promised your father.””
The answer surprised him.
“What did he say?””
Maria looked toward the hallway.
“He said one day, you would need to see what was inside.””
Daniel felt a chill.
“Bring me the key.””
Ten minutes later, Daniel stood in front of the forgotten office.
The door was covered in dust.
A place frozen in time.
He unlocked it.
The room smelled old.
Like memories nobody wanted to touch.
Inside were shelves filled with documents.
Boxes.
Photographs.
Letters.
Daniel turned on the light.
And immediately saw something that made him stop.
A photograph.
His father standing beside Elena Crowe.
Not as an employee.
Not professionally.
They looked close.
Too close.
Daniel picked it up.
Behind it was a handwritten note.
*I never wanted this to hurt my son.*
His heart began racing.
He opened the nearest box.
Inside were financial records.
Letters.
And one document with a familiar name.
Vanessa Crowe.
But the date was impossible.
It was written twenty years earlier.
Before Daniel had ever met her.
Before Vanessa entered his life.
A sound came from behind him.
Daniel turned.
Nobody.
But the window was open.
Someone had been there.
Someone had been searching.
He quickly checked the documents.
One was missing.
A letter.
The most important one.
Whoever came inside knew exactly what they wanted.
The next morning, Daniel confronted Vanessa.
She was standing outside the mansion gate, preparing to leave.
“You knew my father.””
She stopped.
Slowly turned.
“I knew of him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You want answers now?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Yes.””
Her expression became serious.
“Then ask yourself why your father spent years hiding the truth.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The truth about who you really are.””
The words felt like a punch.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You think this is about money?””
She laughed quietly.
“You think I entered your life because I wanted your fortune?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Your father destroyed my family.””
The anger in her voice was real.
Not fake.
Not performed.
For the first time, Daniel wondered if Vanessa was not only the person who hurt Lily…
But also someone carrying a wound from the past.
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her face changed.
“I know.””
The admission shocked him.
“I made mistakes.””
Daniel stared.
“But mistakes have consequences.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
For one second, she looked almost human.
Almost regretful.
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
The fear returned.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
Daniel couldn’t hear the words.
But he saw Vanessa’s face lose color.
After a few seconds, she hung up.
“What happened?””
She looked at him.
And whispered:
“They found her.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the road.
“The woman who knows everything.””
Then she walked away.
Leaving Daniel with one terrifying question.

Who was the woman?
And why was everyone afraid of her?
