Chapter 3: The Monster Behind the Smile

Vanessa recovered quickly.

That was what made her dangerous.

Most people would panic.

Most people would scream.

But Vanessa simply placed a hand over her chest and looked wounded.

“Daniel…”

Her voice trembled perfectly.

“You believe this?””

Daniel said nothing.

Maria stood quietly nearby.

She knew this was the moment everything would be decided.

Because Vanessa was good.

Very good.

She had spent months creating an image.

The caring future wife.

The patient woman who had accepted a grieving man and his daughter.

The woman everyone praised.

But now that image was cracking.

“Daniel,” Vanessa whispered.

“She hates me.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“Lily has never accepted me.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She blames me because I’m not her mother.””

“That doesn’t explain what Maria saw.””

Vanessa looked at the maid.

“You misunderstood.””

Maria stared.

“No, ma’am.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

Just slightly.

“You weren’t in the room.””

“I was.””

“You were hiding.””

Maria’s face went pale.

Because that was true.

“I heard enough.””

Vanessa turned back to Daniel.

“See?””

She shook her head sadly.

“She’s trying to turn you against me.””

Daniel looked between them.

His mind was fighting itself.

One side remembered every kind word Vanessa had shown him.

The other side pictured his daughter sitting on the floor, hungry.

A father’s instinct was stronger than any doubt.

“Where is Lily?””

“Upstairs,” Vanessa said.

“Bring her down.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

“Now.””

The command was quiet.

But final.

A few minutes later, Lily appeared.

She stopped when she saw her father.

“Daddy?””

Daniel’s heart broke.

She looked smaller than he remembered.

He walked toward her.

But Lily didn’t run into his arms.

She hesitated.

That hurt more than anything.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at Maria.

Then finally at him.

“Are you mad?””

Daniel knelt.

“Mad? At you?””

Lily shook her head.

“Mrs. Crowe said if I told anyone, you would be angry.””

Daniel felt something inside him break.

He slowly turned.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Her voice became sharp.

“That’s not what I said.””

Lily stepped back.

“She said you would choose work over me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Every missed moment came rushing back.

Every time Lily waited by the window.

Every time she fell asleep holding a book he promised to read.

Vanessa had used his absence as a weapon.

And she had aimed it at a child.

“Lily,” Daniel whispered.

“Tell me the truth.””

The little girl looked scared.

“Promise you won’t send me away?””

Daniel’s heart stopped.

“Who told you that?””

Lily looked down.

“Mrs. Crowe said if I made trouble, you’d send me to a place for bad children.””

Daniel stood slowly.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Betrayal.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“She’s confused.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice cut through the room.

“She’s afraid.””

The words hit harder than a scream.

Because Vanessa realized something.

She had lost control.

And Daniel finally saw what everyone else had missed.

The little things.

The fear.

The silence.

The way Lily flinched whenever Vanessa moved.

Maria watched as Daniel walked toward his daughter.

He picked her up.

Lily immediately buried her face against his shoulder.

And whispered:

“I tried to be good.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I really tried.””

“I know, baby.””

Behind them, Vanessa’s perfect mask disappeared.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

Because Daniel Oleso was not a man who tolerated betrayal.

Especially not when it involved his child.

He carried Lily upstairs himself.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Maria.

“Thank you.””

The maid shook her head.

“I only did what was right.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You did what everyone else was too afraid to do.””

After he disappeared upstairs, Vanessa remained in the dining room.

Alone.

But she wasn’t defeated.

Not yet.

She picked up her phone.

Her fingers moved quickly.

There was one person she could call.

Someone who knew secrets.

Someone who could destroy reputations.

Someone who could make problems disappear.

She typed one message.

*I need your help. Daniel knows.*

Then she stared at the screen.

Waiting.

A reply came almost instantly.

*Then we need to make sure he never finds out the whole truth.*

Vanessa smiled.

Because she had a secret too.

May you like

A secret that could destroy Daniel Oleso’s entire family.

And she was ready to use it.
