Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

By noon, Daniel had learned something that changed everything.

Vanessa Crowe had lied.

Not about one thing.

About many things.

Her childhood records showed several gaps.

Missing years.

Missing addresses.

Missing information.

The kind of missing details that usually meant someone had worked very hard to erase them.

Daniel sat behind his desk, reading the report again.

A photograph of Lily sat beside his computer.

A reminder.

A promise.

Never again.

His phone rang.

It was the investigator.

“Mr. Oleso.””

“What did you find?””

A pause.

Then:

“Something strange.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Explain.””

“Vanessa Crowe was not always Vanessa Crowe.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean?””

“Her original last name was different.””

The room became quiet.

“What was it?””

“Vale.””

Daniel froze.

“Vale?””

“Yes.””

The same name.

The same name connected to Richard.

The man Vanessa had called last night.

“Are you certain?””

“Completely.””

Daniel looked out the window.

His company controlled billions in assets.

He had negotiated with some of the smartest people in the world.

But he had allowed someone into his home without knowing who she really was.

“What else?””

The investigator continued.

“Her mother, Elena, worked for your father twenty years ago.””

Daniel stood.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

That was impossible.

His father had died before Lily was born.

A man Daniel remembered as strict but honest.

“What was her position?””

“Assistant.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

His father’s assistant.

The connection was becoming clearer.

But not clearer enough.

“What happened?””

“That’s the problem.””

The investigator lowered his voice.

“Records from that period were removed.””

“Removed by who?””

“We don’t know.””

Daniel stared at the wall.

Someone had been hiding something for decades.

And now that secret had walked directly into his house.

Meanwhile, Lily sat at the kitchen table with Maria.

For the first time in days, she was eating a real breakfast.

Warm pancakes.

Fresh fruit.

A glass of milk.

She looked at the plate suspiciously.

Maria smiled.

“You can eat.””

Lily looked up.

“Really?””

Maria’s heart broke.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Lily picked up a fork.

Slowly.

Carefully.

As if she expected someone to take it away.

Maria watched quietly.

“You don’t have to ask permission to eat.””

Lily nodded.

But she still looked unsure.

After a moment, she whispered:

“Maria?””

“Yes?””

“Is Daddy going to leave again?””

The maid looked at her.

“No.””

“But he always has work.””

Maria sat beside her.

“Your father made mistakes.””

Lily looked down.

“But mistakes can be fixed.””

The child thought about that.

Then quietly asked:

“Can people who hurt you change?””

Maria didn’t answer immediately.

Because she knew the truth was complicated.

Sometimes they could.

Sometimes they didn’t want to.

“I don’t know,” she finally said.

“But people who love you will protect you.””

That evening, Daniel returned home earlier than expected.

Lily ran toward him.

Actually ran.

For the first time since he came back.

He caught her in his arms.

And held her tightly.

“I missed you, Daddy.””

“I missed you too.””

A tear slipped from his eye before he could stop it.

He quickly wiped it away.

But Lily noticed.

“You’re sad.””

Daniel smiled.

“Sometimes dads are sad too.””

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because they realize they should have been paying better attention.””

Lily hugged him.

“You’re here now.””

Those four words almost destroyed him.

Because she was right.

He was here now.

And he was never leaving again.

But as Daniel carried her toward the living room, he noticed something.

A suitcase.

Near the entrance.

He stopped.

“What is that?””

Lily’s expression changed.

Maria appeared behind him.

“Mrs. Crowe packed it.””

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

“Where is she?””

Before Maria could answer, Vanessa appeared.

She looked calm.

Controlled.

“I was planning to leave.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because apparently I’m the villain now.””

Lily immediately moved closer to Daniel.

That reaction said everything.

Vanessa noticed.

And for the first time, anger flashed openly.

“You’ve turned her against me.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“No.””

He looked at his daughter.

“You did that yourself.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“No.””

His eyes locked onto hers.

“But I’m starting to understand what you were doing.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You really want the truth?””

Daniel said nothing.

She smiled.

“Ask your father.””

The words froze him.

“My father is dead.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa picked up her suitcase.

“But dead people still leave behind secrets.””

And then she walked away.

Leaving Daniel standing there.

May you like

Wondering what his father had hidden.

And why Vanessa knew about it.
