Chapter 8: The House That Never Existed
The old Cross estate was supposed to be gone.
That was what Damon remembered.
That was what everyone believed.
After his father’s death, the property had been abandoned. The official records showed the land had been sold, the buildings demolished, and the area transformed into private development.
A dead place.
A forgotten place.
A piece of the Cross family history that had disappeared.
But as Damon drove through the darkness toward the location Adrian had given him, one thought kept returning.
Nothing about his family had ever truly disappeared.
Everything had only been hidden.
The road became narrower.
The city lights faded behind him.
The trees grew thicker.
Damon sat behind the wheel alone.
No security team.
No backup.
No Ethan.
No Adrian.
No Grace.
Everyone had argued against it.
Everyone had told him it was a trap.
They were right.
But Damon also knew something they didn’t.
The person who took Alexander’s daughter wanted him alone.
If he arrived with an army, they would disappear.
If he arrived alone, they would reveal themselves.
And Damon needed answers more than he needed safety.
His phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown number.
You came.
Damon looked at the screen.
Then typed one response.
Where is my niece?
The answer came immediately.
You always were like your father.
Damon’s grip tightened.
Another message appeared.
You think power means protecting people.
It doesn’t.
Power means deciding who gets hurt.
Damon stared at the words.
The sender knew him.
Not just his name.
His beliefs.
His weaknesses.
Someone who had studied him for years.
The car finally reached the end of the road.
In front of him stood an old iron gate.
Rust covered the surface.
Trees grew around it.
There was no sign.
No address.
Nothing that suggested a building existed beyond it.
Damon stepped out.
The air felt different.
Heavy.
Like the land itself remembered something.
He walked toward the gate.
A small electronic panel appeared beneath the rust.
Impossible.
The old estate had modern security.
Someone had maintained this place.
Someone had been here.
He placed his hand near the scanner.
A voice sounded.
“Identity confirmed.””
Damon froze.
The system recognized him.
The gate opened.
Slowly.
The path beyond was covered by overgrown plants.
But beneath the weeds, Damon saw stone.
A road.
A road someone still used.
Minutes later, the hidden estate appeared.
And Damon stopped.
Because the house wasn’t abandoned.
It was alive.
Lights glowed inside.
The windows were clean.
The gardens were maintained.
Someone had been living here.
For years.
He entered through the front door.
It opened before he touched it.
“Welcome home.””
The voice came from inside.
Damon stepped forward.
A woman stood in the center of the room.
Not old.
Not young.
Calm.
Waiting.
He had seen her before.
Not personally.
But in photographs.
Family archives.
Old records.
His mother’s collection.
His heart slowed.
Because he knew exactly who she was.
“Clara.””
The woman smiled sadly.
“You remember.””
Damon stared.
Clara Cross.
His father’s sister.
His aunt.
A woman everyone believed had died before Damon was born.
Another ghost.
Another lie.
“How many people in my family are alive?””
Clara looked away.
“More than you know.””
Damon’s expression hardened.
“Where is the child?””
“She’s safe.””
“I didn’t ask if she was safe.””
His voice became colder.
“Where is she?””
Clara looked at him.
“You sound like Richard.””
Damon’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
A painful expression crossed her face.
“You hate him now.””
“I don’t know what I feel.””
“That’s more honest.””
Damon stepped closer.
“Why was this place hidden?””
Clara walked toward the fireplace.
“Because Richard discovered the truth.””
“About what?””
“About the Cross family.””
Damon almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because everyone is afraid to say the rest.””
She turned.
“Your family was never destroyed by enemies.””
Damon waited.
“It was destroyed by inheritance.””
The words confused him.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father built an empire.””
“Yes.””
“But he inherited something before that.””
“What?””
Clara looked toward the walls.
“The Cross family secret.””
Damon remained silent.
“The reason our family became powerful.””
“I’m listening.””
Clara walked to an old cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Documents.
Photographs.
Records.
All hidden.
“All families have secrets.””
She placed a file on the table.
“But powerful families have histories.””
Damon opened it.
The first pages were old.
Very old.
Not business records.
Family records.
Names.
Generations.
At the center of the file was a symbol.
The same Cross symbol.
“What is this?””
Clara answered quietly.
“A promise.””
“To whom?””
“To ourselves.””
Damon looked up.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Clara sighed.
“Because the truth sounds impossible.””
Damon said nothing.
“Your ancestors created a system.””
“What kind?””
“A system where powerful families protected each other.””
Damon frowned.
“Protected?””
“Yes.””
“Or controlled?””
Clara looked at him.
“Both.””
The honesty surprised him.
“The Cross family, the Caldwell family, and several others created agreements decades ago.””
“Financial agreements?””
“More than that.””
She looked at the files.
“Information.””
Damon understood.
Secrets.
Everyone had something to hide.
Everyone had something to lose.
“So my father was part of this.””
“Yes.””
“And Alexander discovered it.””
“Yes.””
“And he tried to expose it.””
“Yes.””
Damon closed the file.
“Why?””
Clara looked at him.
“Because Alexander believed power without morality destroyed everything.””
A bitter smile touched Damon’s face.
“That sounds like him.””
“Yes.””
“And I was what?””
Clara became quiet.
Damon looked at her.
“What did Alexander think of me?””
The question surprised her.
But she answered honestly.
“He loved you.””
Damon looked away.
“He thought you were stronger than him.””
“That’s wrong.””
“No.””
Clara shook her head.
“He thought you were strong because you survived things he couldn’t.””
Damon said nothing.
Because that sounded exactly like something Alexander would say.
Then a small voice came from upstairs.
“Mommy?””
Everyone froze.
Grace’s daughter.
Damon moved instantly.
He followed the sound.
Upstairs.
A small bedroom.
The door opened.
And there she was.
A little girl sitting on the bed.
Holding a stuffed animal.
She looked at Damon with curious eyes.
Not afraid.
Just confused.
“You’re Uncle Damon?””
The question nearly stopped him.
He had imagined this moment.
But never like this.
He knelt slowly.
“Yes.””
The girl tilted her head.
“Mommy says you look like my daddy.””
Damon’s throat tightened.
“Did she?””
She nodded.
“She said you have the same eyes.””
For a moment, Damon couldn’t speak.
Because he saw Alexander.
Not in a photograph.
Not in a memory.
In a child.
A living piece of his brother.
“What’s your name?””
The girl smiled.
“Lily.””
Damon looked at her.
Lily.
His niece.
A child hidden from the world.
A child people were willing to hurt to protect a secret.
“Are you scared?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Daddy said someone would come.””
Damon’s heart stopped.
“What did he say?””
The girl looked at him.
“He said my Uncle Damon would find me.””
Damon closed his eyes.
Alexander had believed in him.
Even when he thought Damon betrayed him.
Even when he stayed away.
He still believed.
A sound echoed downstairs.
A door opening.
Damon stood immediately.
“Stay here.””
Lily nodded.
He walked back downstairs.
Clara was gone.
Only one thing remained on the table.
A letter.
Damon picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
Alexander.
Again.
Damon,
If you found Lily, then you found the place I hid my biggest truth.
But there is one more thing you need to know.
The person who betrayed us is not just someone who wanted power.
They wanted revenge.
They believe the Cross family destroyed their life.
And they are not completely wrong.
Damon’s expression changed.
He continued reading.
Our family made mistakes.
Real ones.
People were hurt.
Lives were changed.
I spent years trying to fix what our name damaged.
But someone else decided forgiveness was impossible.
A noise came from behind him.
Damon turned.
Clara stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
“You need to leave.””
Damon lowered the letter.
“Why?””
“Because she knows you found Lily.””
“Who?””
Clara looked toward the window.
A car stopped outside.
Then another.
Then another.
Damon watched as figures moved through the darkness.
Too many.
Clara whispered:
“The woman who started all of this.””
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Clara looked at him.
“The person your father betrayed.””
The front door opened.
Slowly.
A woman walked inside.
Elegant.
Calm.
Carrying no weapon.
But everyone in the room became afraid.
Because they knew her.
Damon recognized her instantly.
Not because he had met her.
Because he had seen her face in old family photographs.
She looked at him.
Then smiled.
“Hello, Damon.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
“After all these years…”
She whispered.
“I finally have my revenge.””
Damon stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman smiled.
“The daughter your father erased from history.””
Silence.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“My name is Isabella Cross.””
May you like
And Damon realized the greatest secret of his family was not that people had been lying.
It was that he had never known how many people belonged to it.
