Chapter 7: The Man Who Came Back For Revenge

The person standing outside the Cross estate was not a stranger.

That was what made it dangerous.

Damon Cross had spent his entire life preparing for enemies.

He knew how to handle competitors.

He knew how to negotiate with people who wanted his money.

He knew how to fight people who wanted his company.

But he had never prepared for the possibility that the greatest threat would come from someone who knew his childhood.

Someone who knew his family.

Someone who had sat at his dinner table.

The security monitor showed the man standing beneath the estate lights.

Older now.

More tired.

But unmistakable.

Damon stared.

“No.””

The woman beside him remained silent.

Grace looked between them.

“Who is he?””

Damon didn’t answer.

Because saying the name out loud would make it real.

The man on the screen lifted his head.

Almost as if he knew Damon was watching.

Then he smiled.

A familiar smile.

The same smile Damon remembered from years ago.

A smile that once represented friendship.

Now it looked like a warning.

“Damon.””

The voice came through the security speakers.

Calm.

Confident.

“You’ve spent a long time looking for answers.””

Damon stepped closer to the monitor.

“Why?””

The man laughed softly.

“Still the same.””

Damon’s eyes hardened.

“Open the gate.””

Everyone looked at him.

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

“Sir—”

“Open it.””

“He may be armed.””

“He is.””

Ethan stopped.

Damon looked at the screen.

“But he came here because he wants me to know something.””

The woman beside him looked worried.

“That’s exactly what he wants.””

Damon turned.

“Then I’ll find out what.””

Before anyone could stop him, he walked toward the entrance.

Grace followed.

Damon looked back.

“No.””

She stopped.

“You said I’m involved.””

“Yes.””

“Then don’t leave me behind.””

The answer surprised him.

Not because she was brave.

Because she reminded him of Alexander.

The same stubbornness.

The same refusal to run when things became dangerous.

Damon sighed.

“Stay close.””

They reached the entrance.

The massive doors opened.

Cold night air entered the mansion.

The man outside walked in slowly.

No weapon visible.

No fear.

Just confidence.

Damon stopped several feet away.

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then the visitor smiled.

“Hello, Damon.””

The name sounded almost friendly.

Almost.

Damon’s expression didn’t change.

“Adrian.””

Adrian Vale.

His father’s former business partner.

The man who had helped Richard Cross expand Cross Maritime.

The man who had been at the family estate more times than Damon could count.

The man who had attended Alexander’s funeral.

The man who had hugged Damon and told him they would find answers together.

Now he stood before him as part of the mystery.

“You look exactly like your father.””

Damon’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Adrian smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The anger.””

Damon stepped closer.

“Five years.””

“Yes.””

“Five years I believed my brother was dead.””

Adrian said nothing.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

Grace looked shocked.

Damon felt something inside him break.

“You admit it?””

“I have no reason to lie anymore.””

“No?””

Damon laughed coldly.

“You walked into my home surrounded by armed guards.””

Adrian looked around.

“Your guards.””

“Because you’re a threat.””

“Maybe.””

The calmness was infuriating.

Damon wanted anger.

He wanted denial.

He wanted Adrian to fight back.

Anything would be easier than this.

“Where is Alexander?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You already spoke to him.””

Damon froze.

“You know about the call?””

“I know about everything.””

“Then tell me where he is.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Damon’s expression changed.

“Why?””

“Because you’re still not ready.””

Damon almost smiled.

“Not ready?””

“You think this is about revenge.””

“It is.””

“No.””

Adrian looked toward Grace.

“It’s about survival.””

Grace stepped back.

Damon noticed.

“What?””

She looked at Adrian.

“I know him.””

Everyone turned.

Damon looked at her.

“How?””

Grace’s face became pale.

“Alexander told me about him.””

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

“Did he?””

Grace nodded.

“He said there was one person he trusted after his family.””

Damon looked at Adrian.

“Who?””

Grace answered quietly.

“Adrian.””

Silence.

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

“So my brother trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you here?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because Alexander asked me to stop you.””

The sentence shocked everyone.

“Stop me from what?””

“From finding the truth too quickly.””

Damon stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

Adrian walked toward the table.

He placed a small device on it.

A recording.

“Alexander left this.””

Damon looked at it.

“Why didn’t he give it to me himself?””

Adrian’s face changed.

“Because he couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he was watching you.””

Damon frowned.

“Watching me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because someone was trying to find out if you knew.””

The room became silent.

“Someone inside your company.””

Damon thought of the woman who had helped him.

The people around him.

The people he trusted.

“How long?””

“Since before Alexander disappeared.””

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he pressed the button.

Alexander’s voice filled the room.

Damon froze.

His brother.

Again.

“Damon.””

A pause.

“If you’re hearing this, then Adrian failed to keep you away.””

Adrian looked down.

A small sadness crossed his face.

Alexander continued.

“I know you’re angry.””

Damon’s eyes lowered.

“You have every right to be.””

The recording continued.

“But if you’re listening because you want revenge, stop.””

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“Because revenge is exactly what they want.””

A pause.

“They want you emotional.””

The words felt personal.

“They want you to make mistakes.””

Damon looked at the recording device.

“Because they know you better than anyone.””

The room was silent.

Then Alexander said:

“The person who betrayed us isn’t after the company.””

Damon frowned.

“What?””

“They’re after something my father hid.””

The recording continued.

“Something that can destroy everyone involved.””

Adrian looked at Damon.

“The journal.””

Damon said nothing.

Alexander’s voice continued.

“The journal is only the beginning.””

A sound.

Like paper moving.

Then:

“The real evidence is hidden in the Cross family foundation.””

Damon froze.

The foundation.

His father’s charity organization.

One of the most respected institutions in the city.

Impossible.

Alexander continued.

“Damon, listen carefully.””

The tone changed.

More serious.

“Do not trust the person who tells you they protected me.””

Everyone became still.

Adrian slowly looked away.

Damon noticed.

“Why?””

Alexander’s voice lowered.

“Because the person who saved my life…”

A pause.

“Was also the person who destroyed it.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Damon slowly turned toward Adrian.

“You knew about this.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

“That’s not a denial.””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Adrian looked exhausted.

“I saved Alexander.””

Damon waited.

“But?””

Adrian’s eyes filled with regret.

“But I couldn’t save everyone.””

A noise interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Grace looked down.

Her phone.

She answered.

“Hello?””

Her face changed instantly.

Damon noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t respond.

The color drained from her face.

Then she whispered:

“My daughter.””

The entire room froze.

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

Grace’s hand shook.

“My daughter is missing.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“No.””

Damon turned toward him.

“You know something.””

Adrian looked at him.

“They found her.””

The words were quiet.

But everyone heard them.

Damon stepped forward.

“Who?””

Adrian looked toward the dark windows.

“The same people who have been hiding Alexander.””

Damon’s voice became dangerous.

“Where is my niece?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then answered:

“At the place where this started.””

“Where?””

Adrian looked at the family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

The portrait of Richard Cross.

“The original Cross estate.””

Damon frowned.

“That place was destroyed years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Because it was never destroyed.””

A chill moved through the room.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian lowered his voice.

“I’m saying your father built a second home.””

Damon stared.

“A hidden one.””

“For what?””

Adrian looked at him.

“To keep his biggest secret.””

The lights suddenly went out.

Again.

But this time, Damon knew it wasn’t an accident.

Someone was inside.

Someone had bypassed every security system.

A moment later, a single message appeared on the security screen.

Not a warning.

Not a threat.

A photograph.

A little girl.

Standing in a dark room.

Holding a necklace.

Around her neck was the Cross family symbol.

Under the image were four words.

COME ALONE, DAMON.

Damon stared at the screen.

Grace covered her mouth.

Adrian whispered:

“They know you’ll come.””

Damon’s eyes remained on the photograph.

“My niece.””

“Yes.””

“They took her to bring me there.””

“Yes.””

Damon turned.

“Then they made one mistake.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What?””

Damon’s expression changed.

The grief disappeared.

The fear disappeared.

Only determination remained.

“They thought I was still the man who lost his family.””

He looked toward the hidden message.

“They forgot I’m the man who destroys anyone who threatens it.””

And somewhere in the darkness, the person behind everything smiled.

May you like

Because Damon Cross was finally coming to them.

Exactly as planned.
