Chapter 2: The Enemy Who Knew Her Name

The first thing Grace Harper noticed about Damon Cross’s mansion was that it did not feel like a home.

It felt like a fortress.

The iron gates opened slowly as their car approached, revealing a long driveway surrounded by tall black trees. Security cameras followed their movement. Lights turned on automatically as they passed.

Everything about the place screamed protection.

Everything about the place screamed danger.

Grace sat quietly in the passenger seat, one hand resting over her stomach.

She had imagined meeting Damon Cross many times.

Not like this.

Not after being dragged out of a cemetery.

Not after watching him destroy Marcus Caldwell with a single movement.

Not after telling him the truth about Alexander.

The man beside her was impossible to understand.

Everyone in the city had a story about Damon Cross.

Some said he was heartless.

Some said he destroyed people who stood in his way.

Some said he had inherited his father’s empire but became far more dangerous.

Grace had believed those stories.

Until she saw him pick up her bracelet from the mud and clean it carefully.

Until she saw the way he looked at the engraving.

Like it carried a memory he had spent years trying to forget.

The car stopped in front of the mansion.

Damon got out first.

He walked around and opened her door.

Grace hesitated.

“I can walk.””

“I know.””

His answer surprised her.

He wasn’t treating her like she was weak.

He was simply making sure she was safe.

She stepped out.

The moment her feet touched the ground, several people appeared at the entrance.

Security.

Assistants.

A tall older man wearing a dark suit stood at the front.

“Mr. Cross.””

Damon nodded.

“Ethan.””

The older man’s eyes moved toward Grace.

Then immediately toward her stomach.

For a brief moment, surprise crossed his face.

But he recovered quickly.

“Who is she?””

Damon looked at Grace.

Then answered.

“Family.””

The single word changed the atmosphere.

Everyone became silent.

Ethan looked at Damon carefully.

Because he knew.

Damon Cross did not use that word casually.

Not ever.

“Prepare the east guest wing,” Damon said.

Ethan nodded.

“Yes, sir.””

Grace followed Damon inside.

The mansion was enormous.

Marble floors.

Large paintings.

Furniture that looked older than some countries.

But despite all the luxury, the place felt empty.

Like nobody had truly lived there for years.

“You live here alone?””

Grace asked.

Damon continued walking.

“Yes.””

“That’s a big house for one person.””

“It was built for a family.””

The answer carried something painful.

Grace looked at him.

“You miss him.””

Damon stopped.

“Who?””

“Alexander.””

For several seconds, Damon said nothing.

Then he continued walking.

“Yes.””

Grace looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Damon’s expression changed slightly.

“Don’t apologize for something you didn’t do.””

“I brought his child into your life after five years of believing he was gone.””

Damon turned toward her.

“That child is not a problem.””

His voice was firm.

“Never call him that.””

Grace looked surprised.

The intensity in his eyes made her understand something.

Damon might have spent five years grieving his brother.

But he had never stopped loving him.

They reached a large living room.

Damon gestured toward a chair.

“Sit.””

Grace did.

A moment later, a woman entered carrying medical supplies.

“Dr. Wilson.””

The doctor smiled gently.

“Mr. Cross called me.””

Grace looked confused.

“You called a doctor already?””

Damon looked at her.

“You’re pregnant.””

“I’m fine.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Grace opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Because he was right.

She had been attacked.

She had fallen.

She had spent hours terrified.

She needed to know the baby was okay.

The doctor examined her while Damon stood nearby.

Not interfering.

Not asking unnecessary questions.

Just watching.

Protecting.

After several minutes, the doctor smiled.

“The baby is fine.””

Grace released a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

Damon’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

The doctor noticed.

“You were worried.””

Damon looked away.

“I wanted confirmation.””

The doctor smiled.

“Of course.””

After she left, silence filled the room.

Grace looked at Damon.

“You don’t have to pretend.””

“Pretend what?””

“That you don’t care.””

Damon leaned against the table.

“I don’t know how to do this.””

“Do what?””

“Be responsible for someone.””

Grace looked at him.

“You run one of the biggest companies in the country.””

“That’s different.””

“How?””

“Companies don’t wake up crying.””

The honesty surprised her.

For a man who seemed impossible to break, Damon suddenly looked human.

“I don’t know what Alexander told you about me.””

“Not much.””

“Why?””

Grace looked down.

“Because he didn’t want me involved.””

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

“Involved in what?””

She hesitated.

“The reason he died.””

The room became colder.

“Tell me everything.””

Grace looked nervous.

“Alexander found documents.””

“What documents?””

“I don’t know exactly.””

“You knew enough to run.””

Her silence answered.

Damon stepped closer.

“Grace.””

She looked at him.

“He was investigating financial transfers.””

“From where?””

“Caldwell companies.””

Damon’s expression changed.

The Caldwells.

Again.

“Why?””

Grace shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Then what do you know?””

She took a deep breath.

“Alexander believed someone inside both families was moving money illegally.””

Damon stared.

“Both families?””

“Cross and Caldwell.””

The words landed heavily.

“My brother thought someone was using your company.””

Damon’s mind moved quickly.

His father’s death.

Alexander’s investigation.

The plane crash.

The missing files.

All the pieces he had ignored because accepting them meant admitting Alexander’s death might not have been an accident.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Grace laughed sadly.

“You think I didn’t try?””

Damon looked at her.

“I called.””

“When?””

“After Alexander died.””

“Why didn’t I receive the message?””

Grace stared.

“What?””

“I called the Cross office. I asked for you.””

Damon’s face changed.

“No one told me.””

Grace became silent.

Because suddenly they both understood.

Someone had intercepted the message.

Someone had prevented them from meeting.

“Who knew?””

Damon asked.

Grace looked away.

“Only a few people.””

“Names.””

She swallowed.

“Alexander’s assistant.””

“Who?””

“Oliver Kane.””

Damon’s eyes narrowed.

Oliver Kane.

A name he knew.

Alexander’s closest friend.

The man who had handled his brother’s private research.

The man who had disappeared after the accident.

“You’re sure?””

Grace nodded.

“He helped me after Alexander died.””

“Where is he now?””

“I don’t know.””

Damon pulled out his phone.

He made one call.

“Find Oliver Kane.””

A pause.

“Alive. Immediately.””

He ended the call.

Grace watched him.

“You believe me?””

Damon looked at her.

“I believe you know something.””

“That’s not the same.””

“No.””

He placed the bracelet on the table.

“But this is.””

Grace stared at it.

Damon touched the engraving.

“My mother gave this bracelet to Alexander’s fiancée.””

Grace froze.

“Fiancée?””

“Yes.””

“I didn’t know he was engaged.””

Damon looked at her carefully.

“Because he wasn’t.””

The silence returned.

Grace frowned.

“What?””

“My brother never got engaged.””

“Then why did he have this?””

Damon didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared him more than anything.

Alexander had hidden things.

From everyone.

Including him.

A knock interrupted them.

Ethan entered.

“Mr. Cross.””

Damon looked up.

“Yes?””

“Someone has arrived.””

“Who?””

Ethan hesitated.

“A woman.””

Damon frowned.

“Name.””

“She refused to give one.””

Grace immediately stood.

Too quickly.

Pain crossed her face.

Damon noticed.

“Sit down.””

But Grace wasn’t listening.

Her face had gone pale.

“Who is she?””

Ethan looked at her.

“You know her?””

Grace’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

“No.””

But her voice said otherwise.

Damon stepped closer.

“Grace.””

She looked at him.

Fear filled her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“She found me.””

The mansion suddenly felt much smaller.

“Who?””

Grace looked toward the entrance.

And for the first time since arriving, Damon saw something he had not seen before.

Not fear for herself.

Not fear for the baby.

Fear because she knew exactly what was coming.

“She’s the reason Alexander died.””

Damon’s expression hardened.

“Bring her in.””

Ethan looked surprised.

“Sir?””

Damon didn’t move.

“Bring her in.””

A few minutes later, the doors opened.

A woman entered.

Elegant.

Calm.

Beautiful.

And carrying the kind of confidence only powerful people possessed.

Her eyes immediately found Grace.

Then moved to Damon.

A slow smile appeared.

“Damon Cross.””

She removed her gloves.

“I wondered how long it would take before you discovered the truth.””

Damon stared.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Grace.

Then back at him.

“I’m the woman your brother was trying to save.””

Grace whispered her name.

And Damon felt the entire world shift.

“Evelyn Cross.””

His own family name.

May you like

His dead brother’s secret.

And the woman standing in front of him was supposed to have been buried five years ago.
