Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Carried A Dangerous Secret

Damon Cross did not sleep.

Not that night.

Not after hearing his brother’s voice.

Not after discovering that five years of grief had been built on a lie.

Not after hearing a child laugh on the other end of a phone call.

A child.

Alexander’s daughter.

His niece.

A little girl who had existed in the world for years while Damon had stood beside an empty grave.

He sat alone in Alexander’s old office, surrounded by memories that suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The room had always been a place of pain.

Now it was worse.

Because it had become a place of questions.

The photograph remained on the desk.

Damon had stared at it for hours.

Alexander standing beside Grace.

A baby.

A smile on his brother’s face.

A smile Damon had not seen in years.

His fingers moved over the edge of the picture.

“How many secrets did you keep from me?””

The question disappeared into silence.

He didn’t expect an answer.

But he wanted one.

Because anger was easier than admitting what hurt the most.

Alexander had been alive.

He had been afraid.

And he had not come home.

A quiet knock came at the door.

Damon didn’t look up.

“Come in.””

Ethan entered.

The older man carried a folder.

“You should rest.””

Damon gave a humorless laugh.

“Is that advice or an order?””

“After tonight?””

Ethan placed the folder down.

“Advice.””

Damon looked at him.

“You knew.””

Ethan became still.

The accusation was quiet.

But it carried weight.

“Knew what?””

“That something was wrong with Alexander’s death.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

Damon stood.

“How long?””

“Sir…”

“How long did you suspect?””

Ethan looked down.

“Since the investigation ended.””

Damon stared.

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t have proof.””

“You had doubts.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe my brother was gone.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“I watched you destroy yourself after his funeral.””

Damon said nothing.

“I watched you work eighteen-hour days because you thought building an empire would make losing him hurt less.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“I wanted answers too.””

“But you stayed silent.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised Damon.

Ethan had worked for the Cross family for thirty years.

He had been there before Damon became the man everyone feared.

Before the company became an empire.

He was not just an employee.

He was family.

“I’m sorry.””

Damon looked away.

The apology mattered.

But it didn’t erase the years.

“Tell me what you know.””

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old investigation reports.

Private notes.

Security records.

“I kept copies.””

Damon looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Alexander was right.””

“About what?””

“Someone wanted the truth buried.””

Damon looked through the papers.

The documents showed unusual transfers between Cross Maritime and several private accounts.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

A pattern.

Someone had been moving money through companies connected to both Cross and Caldwell.

“This happened under my father?””

Ethan nodded.

“Some of it.””

Damon’s eyes moved.

“And after he died?””

Ethan was silent.

Damon looked up.

“Ethan.””

“The transfers continued.””

The room became colder.

“My father died years ago.””

“Yes.””

“So someone continued his work.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Ethan hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Damon hated that answer.

Because too many people had said it.

I don’t know.

I can’t tell you.

It’s complicated.

Every secret in his family came wrapped in those words.

“What about Alexander?””

Ethan looked at the photograph.

“He found the same information.””

“And?””

“He tried to expose it.””

Damon leaned against the desk.

“Then why did he disappear instead of coming to me?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“There was one thing you don’t know.””

Damon’s eyes sharpened.

“What?””

“Alexander came to me before the crash.””

The words stopped him.

“What did he say?””

Ethan took a breath.

“He told me he believed someone inside the family was involved.””

Damon’s expression changed.

“Inside the family.””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I promised him.””

Damon laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps making promises to my dead brother.””

“He wasn’t dead.””

The sentence came softly.

Damon looked at Ethan.

The older man’s eyes were filled with regret.

“He asked me to protect you.””

That hurt more than Damon expected.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

Then lowered his voice.

“From trusting the wrong person.””

Before Damon could answer, the door opened.

Grace entered.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

“I need to tell you something.””

Damon turned.

“What?””

She held something in her hand.

A small envelope.

“I found this before I came here.””

Damon looked at it.

“Where?””

“Inside the lining of my old suitcase.””

“Why didn’t you open it?””

“Because Alexander told me not to.””

Damon stared.

“What does it contain?””

Grace looked at the envelope.

“I don’t know.””

“Then why bring it now?””

“Because after tonight…”

Her eyes met his.

“I think the rules changed.””

Damon took the envelope.

It was old.

Yellowed.

The handwriting on the front made him stop.

Alexander’s.

Only one word was written.

Damon.

His brother had written his name.

For him.

Slowly, Damon opened it.

Inside was a letter.

His hands tightened as he read.

Damon,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from this.

I’m sorry.

I wanted to tell you everything.

I wanted to come home.

But I learned something terrifying.

The person behind this is not afraid of losing money.

They are afraid of losing control.

And they know you better than anyone.

Damon stopped reading.

His eyes moved over the next line.

The truth is hidden in the one place you would never look.

Your father’s private records.

Not the company records.

Not the public files.

The ones he hid from everyone.

There was more.

But Damon paused.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what Alexander meant.

His father’s private records.

The one place he had never searched.

The old family vault.

A place sealed after his father’s death.

A place Damon had avoided because it contained the final pieces of a man he loved.

Grace watched him.

“What does it say?””

Damon folded the letter.

“Nothing.””

She frowned.

“You’re lying.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised her.

“I am.””

Damon looked at her.

“But I need to find out why.””

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A security alarm.

Not the external alarm.

The internal one.

Everyone froze.

Ethan immediately reached for his phone.

“Someone entered the lower level.””

Damon’s expression changed.

“The vault.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Yes.””

The family vault.

The one place nobody should have been able to access.

Damon moved quickly.

Grace followed.

“No.””

He stopped.

“You stay here.””

“I’m involved.””

“You’re pregnant.””

“And Alexander trusted me with his child.””

The answer silenced him.

Because she was right.

Damon nodded once.

“Stay behind me.””

They moved through the mansion.

The lower level was darker.

Older.

Built before the modern renovations.

At the end of the hallway stood a large steel door.

The family vault.

The lock was open.

That was impossible.

Damon stepped forward.

Inside, the room was empty.

Almost.

On the floor sat a single object.

A black leather journal.

Damon recognized it instantly.

His father’s journal.

The one believed to have disappeared after his death.

Ethan looked shocked.

“Who put that there?””

Damon didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Someone wanted him to find it.

He picked it up.

A note was attached.

Not his father’s handwriting.

Not Alexander’s.

Someone else’s.

Three words.

You were wrong.

Damon opened the journal.

The first page contained a date.

Twenty years earlier.

The second page contained a name.

A name that made Grace gasp.

Because she knew it.

Damon looked at her.

“What?””

Her face had turned pale.

“Where did you see that name?””

She pointed at the page.

“Alexander’s files.””

Damon looked down.

The name stared back at him.

The person who had connected the Cross and Caldwell families.

The person who had been moving money.

The person who had destroyed lives from the shadows.

A name Damon never expected.

A name that belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had stood beside him for years.

Someone who knew every weakness he had.

Ethan whispered:

“No…”

Damon looked at him.

“You know this person?””

Ethan’s face lost all color.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

The older man slowly lifted his eyes.

And answered:

“The person who raised you.””

Damon felt the world tilt.

Because the enemy wasn’t just close.

May you like

The enemy had been there since the beginning.

And the truth about his family was finally opening its doors.
