Chapter 4: The Brother Hidden From The World
The sound of the gunshot stayed inside Damon Cross’s head long after the room became silent.
Not the explosion.
Not the shattering glass.
The silence afterward.
That was always the worst part.
The moment when reality decided what had changed forever.
Damon had experienced death before.
He had stood beside graves.
He had watched doctors lower their eyes before speaking.
He had listened to people deliver condolences with empty voices.
But this was different.
Because five years ago, he had buried his brother.
And tonight, he had learned he might have buried a lie.
Oliver Kane lay motionless on Alexander’s office floor.
The man who had carried his brother’s secrets.
The man who had disappeared.
The man who had finally returned with answers.
And now he was gone.
Again.
Damon knelt beside him.
“Who shot you?””
No answer.
Of course there was no answer.
But Damon asked anyway.
Because some part of him still expected the world to make sense.
It didn’t.
Ethan rushed into the room with security behind him.
“Mr. Cross!””
Damon raised one hand.
Everyone stopped.
“Lock down the property.””
Ethan looked at the body.
Then at the broken window.
“Yes, sir.””
“And nobody leaves.””
The security team moved immediately.
Damon stood slowly.
His eyes remained on Oliver.
“Call the police.””
Ethan hesitated.
That hesitation was small.
Almost invisible.
But Damon noticed.
“What?””
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Sir… if this involves the information you found…”
Damon turned.
“Say it.””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Do you trust the police?””
The question bothered Damon.
Not because it was unreasonable.
Because five years ago, investigators had told him Alexander’s death was an accident.
They had told him there was nothing suspicious.
They had closed the case.
And Damon had accepted it.
Because sometimes accepting pain was easier than fighting reality.
Now he wondered how much of his life had been built on carefully arranged lies.
“Call someone outside the department.””
Ethan nodded.
“I understand.””
Damon looked back at the photograph.
The one that had changed everything.
Alexander.
Grace.
A baby.
Alive.
A family.
A secret.
His brother had not died immediately.
He had lived.
He had loved.
He had become a father.
And Damon had known nothing.
A painful thought entered his mind.
Maybe Alexander had not trusted him.
Maybe his own brother had chosen to hide from him.
The idea hurt more than he wanted to admit.
“Damon.””
Grace’s voice came from the doorway.
He turned.
She stood there with Evelyn behind her.
She looked at Oliver’s body.
Then at Damon.
Her face changed when she saw the photograph in his hand.
She knew.
“You found it.””
Damon stared at her.
“You knew.””
Grace looked away.
“Not everything.””
“You knew Alexander was alive.””
“No.””
“Then explain that picture.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I saw him.””
The words hit him.
“When?””
Grace swallowed.
“After the crash.””
Damon’s expression became colder.
“After the crash?””
“Yes.””
“You saw my brother after everyone said he was dead?””
Grace nodded slowly.
“And you said nothing?””
Her silence answered.
Damon looked away.
The anger came.
Not explosive.
Not loud.
The kind that was much more dangerous.
“You let me bury him.””
“I thought he was dead too.””
The answer stopped him.
Grace stepped closer.
“Damon, listen to me.””
He didn’t move.
“When Alexander disappeared, I searched everywhere.””
“For how long?””
“Months.””
“And then?””
Grace looked down.
“Then he came back.””
The room became silent.
Damon stared.
“What?””
“He came back.””
“When?””
“Six months after the accident.””
Damon felt his heartbeat change.
“Where?””
Grace’s voice became softer.
“He came to my apartment.””
“And?””
“He was injured.””
Damon looked toward the photograph.
“He had a baby with him?””
Grace shook her head.
“No.””
“Then whose baby is that?””
Grace looked at the picture.
“That was taken later.””
Damon waited.
She continued.
“Alexander was trying to protect the child.””
“The child?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Grace looked at him.
“Because the baby wasn’t just his.””
Damon frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Before Grace could answer, Evelyn spoke.
“Because that baby was evidence.””
Everyone looked at her.
Damon’s eyes narrowed.
“Evidence of what?””
Evelyn walked into the room.
Her expression was serious.
“Of who betrayed him.””
Damon looked between the two women.
“I’m tired of half-truths.””
Nobody spoke.
“Every person in this room knows something I don’t.””
His voice grew colder.
“I am done being the last person to learn what happened to my own family.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then you need to understand something first.””
“What?””
“Your brother didn’t fake his death because he wanted to disappear.””
Damon waited.
“He did it because someone wanted him dead.””
The room went quiet.
“Who?””
Evelyn looked toward the photograph.
“Your father.””
Damon froze.
The name carried more weight than any weapon.
“My father died three years before Alexander.””
“Yes.””
“So explain how he wanted Alexander dead.””
Evelyn’s expression was painful.
“Because your father wasn’t the person you believed he was.””
Damon immediately rejected it.
“No.””
Evelyn didn’t react.
“You loved him.””
“That doesn’t make you right.””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“But it makes this harder.””
Damon walked closer.
“My father built this company.””
“Yes.””
“He protected this family.””
“Yes.””
“He taught me everything.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you standing here accusing a dead man?””
“Because Alexander discovered the truth.””
Damon’s face hardened.
“What truth?””
Evelyn took a deep breath.
“Cross Maritime was never built only on shipping.””
Silence.
“Your father created a second network.””
“What kind of network?””
“One that moved money.””
Damon stared.
“You’re talking about criminal activity.””
“I’m talking about secrets.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because the truth is worse.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Damon’s phone.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice Damon had not heard in five years.
“Damon.””
His entire body went still.
The room disappeared.
The voice continued.
“I’m sorry.””
Damon couldn’t breathe.
Because he knew that voice.
He had heard it laughing.
Arguing.
Calling him arrogant.
Calling him old.
A younger brother who annoyed him every day.
A younger brother who stole his clothes.
A younger brother who always believed Damon needed to smile more.
“Alexander?””
Nobody moved.
The voice on the phone was quiet.
“Yes.””
Damon closed his eyes.
For a moment, he was no longer a billionaire.
No longer a businessman.
No longer the man everyone feared.
He was just an older brother who had spent five years missing someone.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“I can’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if you know, they’ll know.””
Damon gripped the phone.
“Who are they?””
Another pause.
Then Alexander answered.
“The people closest to you.””
Damon looked around the room.
At Ethan.
At Grace.
At Evelyn.
At the people standing beside him.
“Are you saying someone here is working against me?””
“I’m saying don’t trust anyone.””
Damon’s voice became softer.
“Why didn’t you come home?””
The silence on the other end lasted longer.
Then Alexander spoke.
“Because I thought you were the one who betrayed me.””
The words cut deeper than Damon expected.
“What?””
“I found something, Damon.””
“What?””
“I found out someone inside Cross Maritime was helping destroy the company from within.””
Damon looked at the papers on the desk.
“And you thought it was me?””
“No.””
Alexander’s voice cracked.
“At first.””
Damon closed his eyes.
“Why?””
“Because the evidence pointed to you.””
The room felt colder.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
“Because someone wanted me to believe it.””
Damon said nothing.
“Alexander.””
“I’m sorry, brother.””
The way he said brother nearly broke him.
“I should have trusted you.””
Damon swallowed.
“Come home.””
Silence.
Then:
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m not alone.””
Damon looked at Grace.
“What does that mean?””
A sound came through the phone.
A child laughing.
Damon froze.
Alexander whispered:
“Because my daughter is with me.””
Grace covered her mouth.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Damon couldn’t speak.
His niece.
Alive.
His brother.
Alive.
A family he never knew existed.
Then Alexander said something else.
Something that changed everything.
“But there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
“The person who tried to kill me…”
A pause.
“They’re not trying to hide anymore.””
Damon looked toward the window.
The rain outside had stopped.
“What do you mean?””
Alexander’s voice became urgent.
“They’re coming for you next.””
The call ended.
Damon stood frozen.
For five years, he had believed he was fighting enemies outside his family.
Competitors.
Rivals.
Strangers.
Now he understood something far more dangerous.
The enemy had always been close.
Very close.
And somewhere in the city, someone who had spent years hiding Alexander Cross realized one terrible truth.
May you like
Damon Cross had found his brother.
And now he was coming for them.
