Chapter 9: The Daughter Hidden From The Bloodline

The name stayed in the room like a storm.

Isabella Cross.

Damon had heard many names throughout his life.

Names of rivals.

Names of enemies.

Names of people who wanted his company.

But this name was different.

Because it belonged to his family.

And somehow, everyone had forgotten her.

Or worse.

Everyone had chosen to forget her.

Damon stared at the woman standing in the doorway.

She carried herself like someone who had spent years preparing for this moment.

No anger.

No desperation.

Just certainty.

That frightened him more than rage would have.

“Isabella Cross.””

He repeated the name slowly.

The woman smiled.

“Yes.””

Damon looked at Clara.

His aunt looked away.

That answer was enough.

“You knew.””

Clara closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The disappointment hit harder than the confession.

Another secret.

Another person who had watched him live inside a lie.

Damon turned back toward Isabella.

“Who are you?””

A quiet laugh escaped her.

“You already know.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I know the name.””

He stepped forward.

“But I don’t know the person.””

Isabella studied him.

“You really are Richard’s son.””

Damon’s expression changed.

“Don’t say his name like you knew him.””

“I did know him.””

“Then explain why nobody knows you.””

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, something real appeared in Isabella’s eyes.

Pain.

“Because Richard made sure nobody would.””

The room became silent.

Lily stood upstairs, hidden but listening.

Damon noticed.

He lowered his voice.

“Take this conversation somewhere else.””

Isabella looked toward the stairs.

“She should hear.””

“No.””

Damon’s answer was immediate.

“She’s a child.””

Isabella stared at him.

“And that is why you are different.””

Damon frowned.

“What?””

“Richard would have used her.””

The words cut.

Damon stepped closer.

“Careful.””

“I’m not insulting you.””

She looked at Lily.

“I’m telling you why Alexander trusted you.””

Damon hated that everyone kept using his brother’s trust like a weapon.

“Enough.””

Isabella nodded slightly.

“Fine.””

She walked into the room.

“Ask your questions.””

Damon remained standing.

“Why were you hidden?””

Isabella looked around the old estate.

“This house existed because your father wanted secrets to survive.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She met his eyes.

“It’s the beginning of one.””

Damon waited.

“Richard Cross had a daughter before he had you.””

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

Damon felt the world shift.

“My father never mentioned you.””

“Of course not.””

“Why?””

“Because I was inconvenient.””

Clara spoke quietly.

“Isabella.””

“No.””

Isabella looked at her.

“He deserves the truth.””

Then she faced Damon.

“Your father was young when I was born.””

Damon listened.

“My mother was not wealthy. Not powerful. She had no family name that mattered.””

“And Richard?””

“He promised he would take care of us.””

Damon’s jaw tightened.

“And he didn’t.””

“No.””

Isabella’s voice became colder.

“He gave my mother money. A house. Anything except recognition.””

Damon looked away.

He didn’t want to defend Richard.

Not anymore.

“What happened?””

“My mother died when I was sixteen.””

Silence.

“After that, I went to Richard.””

Damon looked at her.

“And?””

“He looked at me like I was a problem he needed to solve.””

The anger in her voice was controlled.

Carefully controlled.

“He offered me money.””

Damon said nothing.

“He told me the Cross name could not be damaged.””

There it was.

The thing Damon had heard his entire life.

The family name.

The legacy.

The reputation.

Everything mattered.

Except people.

“What did you do?””

“I disappeared.””

“Because he told you to?””

“No.””

Isabella smiled faintly.

“Because I realized I would never belong.””

Damon looked at Clara.

“And everyone knew?””

“Not everyone.””

“But enough.””

Clara lowered her head.

“Richard told a few people.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

Damon looked at Isabella.

“Of you?””

“No.””

Isabella answered.

“Of what I knew.””

The room became still.

Damon understood.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

“What did you know?””

Isabella walked toward the table.

She placed an old envelope down.

“Your father’s first agreement.””

Damon looked at it.

“The foundation?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“The real beginning.””

Damon opened the envelope.

Inside was a document dated decades earlier.

The names were different.

The families were the same.

Cross.

Caldwell.

Others.

But at the bottom was one signature.

Richard Cross.

And beside it:

Isabella’s mother.

Damon looked confused.

“What is this?””

“A promise.””

“Between them?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of promise?””

Isabella looked at him.

“That if Richard ever betrayed my mother, I would inherit the right to expose everything.””

Damon stared.

“That sounds impossible.””

“It does.””

She smiled sadly.

“Because Richard spent years making sure nobody believed I existed.””

Damon read the document again.

A legal agreement.

A hidden inheritance.

A claim.

A secret that could destroy the Cross empire.

“Why now?””

Isabella looked toward Lily.

“Because Alexander found out.””

Damon’s eyes sharpened.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“He knew about you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he discovered the truth was bigger than me.””

Damon looked at her.

“Explain.””

Isabella sat down.

“Alexander discovered that Richard wasn’t only hiding me.””

“What else?””

“He was hiding what happened to my mother.””

The room became colder.

“What happened?””

Isabella looked at Damon.

“She was killed.””

Nobody spoke.

Damon felt his heartbeat change.

“By who?””

“That’s the question Alexander was trying to answer.””

“Did he find out?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Isabella looked toward the window.

“Victor Caldwell.””

The name again.

The Caldwell family.

Damon’s hands tightened.

“Why?””

“Because my mother had evidence.””

“Of what?””

“Of the agreement between the families.””

Damon frowned.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Isabella looked at him.

“She had proof that the agreement was used to control businesses, destroy competitors, and silence people who threatened them.””

Damon remembered the journal.

The financial records.

The hidden network.

Everything connected.

“So Victor killed her.””

“Yes.””

“And my father?””

Isabella didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Damon’s expression changed.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Because even after everything, some part of him had still hoped Richard was different.

“Did he order it?””

“No.””

Damon looked at her.

“Then why blame him?””

“Because he covered it.””

Silence.

“He knew Victor was dangerous.””

“And he did nothing.””

“Yes.””

Damon looked down.

The truth was becoming heavier.

His father had not been a monster.

That would have been easier.

Monsters were simple.

But Richard Cross was complicated.

A man who loved his family.

A man who protected his empire.

A man who made terrible choices.

A man who taught Damon that power mattered more than forgiveness.

A man whose mistakes had created this entire nightmare.

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

Lily.

Damon moved immediately.

But before he reached the stairs, the lights flickered.

Then darkness.

Again.

The pattern was becoming familiar.

Someone was inside.

Damon reached for his phone.

No signal.

Of course.

A moment later, emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Weak.

Dangerous.

Clara looked around.

“She’s not alone.””

Damon looked at Isabella.

“You brought them?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

A voice came through the speakers.

A familiar voice.

“Damon.””

Everyone froze.

Because it was a voice from the past.

Richard Cross.

Damon stared at the ceiling.

Impossible.

The recording continued.

“My son.””

Damon’s face changed.

A recording.

Not alive.

But his father’s voice.

“I knew this day would come.””

The mansion became silent.

Richard continued.

“If you are hearing this, then Alexander failed to protect you.””

Damon closed his eyes.

Even now.

Even after death.

His father was still controlling the story.

“You are probably angry.””

A pause.

“You should be.””

Damon listened.

“I made mistakes.””

That admission surprised him.

“More than I can count.””

The recording continued.

“But the greatest mistake I made was believing I could control the consequences.””

Damon looked at Isabella.

She listened carefully.

“Isabella.””

The woman froze.

Richard’s voice continued.

“If you are there, then I owe you an apology I should have given years ago.””

Isabella’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked vulnerable.

“I failed your mother.””

Silence.

“I failed you.””

A tear appeared in Isabella’s eyes.

Damon noticed.

Because this was not the revenge he expected.

This was grief.

Richard continued.

“And I failed my sons.””

The recording paused.

Then:

“Damon, if Alexander is alive, then you must find him.””

Damon stepped closer to the speaker.

“Why?””

Richard answered:

“Because he knows the final truth.””

A pause.

“The person who destroyed our family is not Victor Caldwell.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“Victor was only a servant.””

Damon’s blood ran cold.

“Someone else controlled him.””

The lights suddenly went out again.

A crash came from upstairs.

Damon ran.

The bedroom door was open.

Lily was gone.

On the bed was a note.

One sentence.

Your father was right.

And beneath it, a name.

Alexander Cross.

Damon stared.

His brother’s name.

His brother’s handwriting.

But impossible.

Unless...

Unless Alexander had not been the only one hiding.

Damon turned around slowly.

Because the greatest question was no longer who betrayed the family.

It was this:

May you like

Was Alexander really protecting them?

Or had he been part of the secret all along?
