Chapter 8: The Trial of Public Opinion

The morning of the board announcement, the media gathered outside Ashcroft Tower.

Cameras.

Reporters.

Questions shouted from every direction.

"Eleanor, are you destroying Adrian Vale’s career?""

"Did you hide your ownership from your husband?""

"Was your marriage just a business arrangement?""

The questions came quickly.

Cruelly.

The public loved a scandal.

Especially when the people involved had money.

But they never saw the years behind the headlines.

They never saw the sacrifices.

The conversations.

The moments where one person carried the entire relationship while the other collected praise.

I walked past the cameras without answering.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I refused to let Adrian turn my life into entertainment.

Inside the building, Claire handed me the final report.

"Everything is ready.""

I nodded.

"Then let’s finish this.""

The board meeting was different from the first one.

The first time, Adrian entered believing he was untouchable.

This time, he entered angry.

Desperate.

He walked into the room with his lawyer.

"You cannot hold this meeting without me.""

I looked at him.

"Yes, we can.""

His lawyer stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale believes these accusations are defamatory.""

I opened the file.

"Then he will appreciate the opportunity to review the evidence.""

Adrian looked at the documents.

His confidence disappeared.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Because he recognized them.

The financial transfers.

The private agreements.

The hidden contracts.

The signatures.

His signatures.

"You went through my files.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"We reviewed company records.""

His lawyer flipped through the pages.

"This does not prove intent.""

Claire placed another folder on the table.

"Perhaps this will.""

Inside were messages.

Private conversations.

Emails.

Plans.

Dates.

Adrian’s entire strategy.

The room became silent.

His lawyer stopped speaking.

The directors looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

And somehow, that was worse.

Because Adrian had spent years chasing respect.

Now he was watching it disappear.

"You set me up.""

His voice was quiet.

I stared at him.

"No.""

"You wanted me to fail.""

"No.""

My answer surprised him.

"I wanted you to stop.""

He looked confused.

"Stop what?""

"Destroying everything you touched.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian laughed.

A broken laugh.

"You really think you’re better than me?""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I paused.

"I think I’m responsible.""

That was the difference.

Later that afternoon, the board released its official statement.

No drama.

No insults.

Just facts.

Adrian Vale had violated his responsibilities as CEO.

He had misused company resources.

He had created conflicts of interest.

He had damaged shareholder trust.

The public reaction was immediate.

The same people who once praised him began questioning him.

The same magazines that called him a genius began publishing investigations.

The same investors who admired his confidence began studying his mistakes.

A reputation built for years could collapse in days.

That evening, I returned home exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

I poured myself a glass of wine and sat alone in the living room.

For the first time in weeks, there was silence.

No meetings.

No reporters.

No Adrian.

Just me.

Then my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Eleanor.""

His voice sounded serious.

"What happened?""

"There’s something else you need to know.""

I sat up.

"What?""

"Your father left another document.""

I frowned.

"I thought we found everything.""

"So did I.""

"Where is it?""

"Hidden in the original Vale Meridian acquisition files.""

My heart slowed.

"Why would my father hide something there?""

Daniel was quiet.

"Because he knew Adrian might someday betray you.""

I closed my eyes.

My father had predicted everything.

"What does the document say?""

"I think you should read it yourself.""

An hour later, Daniel arrived.

He handed me a sealed envelope.

Different from the first.

Older.

More fragile.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

My father’s handwriting.

*Eleanor,*

*If Adrian ever turns against you, understand one thing.*

*The company is not your greatest inheritance.*

I stopped.

Below that sentence was another.

*The truth is.*

*You were always meant to lead something much bigger.*

I looked at Daniel.

"What does this mean?""

He hesitated.

"There is another company.""

I stared.

"What company?""

"One that your grandfather built.""

I felt a strange chill.

"Why have I never heard of it?""

"Because it disappeared from public records.""

"Disappeared?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your family buried it.""

"Why?""

His answer changed everything.

"Because someone tried to take it.""

I looked down at the letter.

And suddenly, Adrian’s betrayal felt smaller.

Because maybe this was never just about Vale Meridian.

May you like

Maybe Adrian had unknowingly stepped into a much larger game.

A game that started long before our marriage.
