Chapter 2: The Owner Nobody Knew
Adrian walked off the stage smiling.
He expected me to be waiting.
Maybe crying.
Maybe begging.
Maybe asking him why.
Instead, I remained seated.
That seemed to confuse him more than anything else.
He approached our table with Vanessa beside him.
The crowd watched.
Everyone loved a public disaster.
They just never expected the disaster to belong to the person who looked the most composed.
"Eleanor," Adrian said.
His voice was lower now.
The performance was over.
"Are you going to make this difficult?""
I looked at him.
The man standing in front of me was my husband.
At least legally.
But the person I married had disappeared years ago.
"Difficult?"" I repeated.
Vanessa smiled.
"Adrian just wants everyone to have a peaceful evening.""
I almost laughed.
Peaceful.
That was an interesting word coming from the woman who had spent months sneaking around with my husband.
"How generous of both of you," I said.
Adrian leaned closer.
"You need to understand something.""
I waited.
"This company requires someone strong enough to lead it.""
There it was.
The insult hidden beneath concern.
The suggestion that I was weak.
That I was just a decorative wife.
"I agree," I said.
His eyebrows lifted.
"You do?""
"Absolutely.""
I looked toward the stage.
"Vale Meridian needs someone who understands ownership, leadership, and responsibility.""
His expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
Adrian was good at hiding fear.
That was why he had survived so long.
"What exactly are you trying to say?""
Before I could answer, Celeste approached.
She moved with the confidence of someone who believed everyone should make space for her.
"Eleanor, don't embarrass yourself.""
I turned.
His mother smiled coldly.
"You have always been emotional.""
Interesting.
The woman who cried when her favorite designer stopped making a handbag collection was calling me emotional.
"You should accept reality with dignity.""
I smiled.
"Dignity?""
She nodded.
"Adrian has built something incredible. You should be proud of him.""
I looked at Adrian.
"I was.""
The past tense bothered him.
I saw it.
"You were lucky to have him," Celeste continued.
"No.""
My answer came quickly.
The surrounding people became quiet.
Celeste frowned.
"No?""
I stood.
For the first time that night, I allowed myself to take up space.
"No, Celeste. He was lucky to have me.""
The silence returned.
Adrian laughed.
A fake laugh.
The kind people use when they want others to believe they are not uncomfortable.
"Enough.""
He stepped forward.
"You are making a scene.""
I looked around the ballroom.
"Interesting.""
I glanced at the stage where he had publicly humiliated me minutes earlier.
"Because I thought that was your specialty tonight.""
Several guests looked away.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
"You cannot threaten me.""
"I’m not threatening you.""
I picked up my phone.
"I’m informing you.""
His smile returned.
"You really think you have power here?""
I looked directly at him.
"No.""
I paused.
"I know.""
He shook his head.
"Eleanor, stop pretending.""
That sentence almost made me sad.
Almost.
Because Adrian truly believed I was pretending.
For twelve years, he had mistaken silence for weakness.
Patience for ignorance.
Kindness for stupidity.
He had no idea I knew about Vanessa.
No idea I knew about the secret accounts.
No idea I knew he had been moving company resources to build his own personal image.
No idea I had spent months collecting evidence.
A CEO could survive arrogance.
But he could not survive betrayal against the people who owned the company.
A notification appeared on my phone.
The voting consent had been filed.
The process had begun.
My attorney sent one sentence.
"Control transfer initiated.""
I looked at Adrian.
"Enjoy the rest of your celebration.""
He narrowed his eyes.
"Why are you smiling?""
Because I finally understood something.
Adrian’s greatest mistake was not cheating on me.
It was believing he could destroy someone who had already survived losing everything.
"My husband," I said quietly, "you have no idea what you just did.""
He laughed.
"You still think you can scare me.""
"No.""
I picked up my purse.
"I think you are about to scare yourself.""
Then I walked away.
Behind me, I heard Vanessa whisper.
"What was that about?""
Adrian answered confidently.
"Nothing.""
But his voice lacked certainty.
May you like
And for the first time in years, I heard something I never expected from Adrian Vale.
Fear.
