Chapter 10: The Enemy My Family Never Defeated
The name on the document haunted me.
I read it once.
Then again.
Then a third time, hoping my eyes had misunderstood.
They had not.
*Julian Cross.*
For most people, the name meant nothing.
But for the Ashcroft family, it was a name buried beneath decades of silence.
A name my father never spoke.
A name Daniel avoided.
A name that appeared in old records like a shadow.
"Who is he?"" I asked.
Daniel looked toward the window.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked uncertain.
"Julian Cross was your grandfather’s greatest rival.""
I studied the document.
"Rival?""
"No.""
Daniel corrected himself.
"Enemy.""
The word carried weight.
My family had always been careful with language.
They never called competitors enemies.
They called them challenges.
They called them obstacles.
They called them opportunities.
But Julian Cross was different.
"Why was he investigating the Ashcroft Legacy Group?""
Daniel was silent.
That silence gave me my answer before he spoke.
"Because he never stopped.""
I leaned back.
"Never stopped what?""
"Trying to destroy it.""
The room felt colder.
For years, I thought Adrian was the biggest threat I had faced.
A cheating husband.
A dishonest CEO.
A man who underestimated me.
But Adrian had been fighting for a throne.
Julian Cross wanted to burn the entire kingdom.
I spent the next six hours studying every file Daniel brought me.
Julian Cross was brilliant.
Dangerously brilliant.
Unlike Adrian, who needed attention, Julian preferred invisibility.
He built companies quietly.
Acquired competitors silently.
Moved through industries without becoming a public figure.
By the time people realized what he was doing, he already owned half the battlefield.
"He sounds like my grandfather," I said.
Daniel nodded.
"That was why your grandfather respected him.""
"Respected him?""
"Before they became enemies, they were partners.""
That surprised me.
"Partners?""
Daniel sighed.
"Business relationships were complicated back then.""
He opened an old photograph.
Two young men stood beside a factory.
One was my grandfather.
The other was Julian Cross.
They looked like friends.
Not enemies.
"What happened?""
Daniel folded his hands.
"Power.""
One word.
Always one word.
"The partnership began falling apart when your grandfather refused to give Julian control over Ashcroft assets.""
"Because he didn’t trust him.""
"Because Julian wanted ownership, not partnership.""
I looked at the picture.
A familiar pattern.
People who wanted what my family built.
People who believed they deserved control because they were talented enough to take it.
"How did my grandfather stop him?""
Daniel hesitated.
"He didn’t.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"He disappeared.""
My heart stopped.
"Disappeared?""
Daniel nodded.
"After a major legal battle, Julian vanished from the business world.""
"Then why is he back now?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because your father’s death changed everything.""
The next morning, I called an emergency strategy meeting.
Not with Vale Meridian executives.
With Ashcroft Legacy advisors.
People I had never met.
People who had been protecting my family’s interests from behind the scenes for years.
Walking into that room felt different.
At Vale Meridian, people knew me as the woman who took back her company.
Here?
They knew me as the heir.
The successor.
The person my father prepared to lead.
An older man named Thomas Reed stood as I entered.
"Eleanor Ashcroft.""
I nodded.
"Thomas.""
"You look like your father.""
Everyone said that.
But this time, it felt different.
Because these people knew my father before he became a memory.
"The situation with Julian Cross is serious," Thomas said.
"I know.""
"No.""
His expression remained calm.
"You know the name.""
He placed a file on the table.
"You do not know what he is capable of.""
I opened the file.
Inside were reports.
Acquisitions.
Failed attacks.
Market movements.
Julian Cross had spent years preparing.
"How long has he been active?""
"Months.""
"And nobody told me?""
Thomas exchanged a look with Daniel.
That irritated me.
"Answer me.""
Thomas spoke carefully.
"Your father wanted you protected.""
I closed the file.
"I am not a child.""
"No.""
Thomas looked directly at me.
"That is why we are telling you now.""
That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.
*You finally found the truth.*
I stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
*Your father was smarter than Adrian.*
My expression changed.
Julian knew.
He knew about Adrian.
He knew about my marriage.
He had been watching.
I replied.
*Who is this?*
The answer came immediately.
*Someone who knows what your husband tried to do.*
My hands tightened.
*Julian Cross?*
A pause.
Then:
*Good. You’re learning quickly.*
I stood.
The message continued.
*But you’re still too late.*
The next day, Vale Meridian’s stock dropped.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
A warning.
A test.
Someone was applying pressure.
Claire rushed into my office.
"Eleanor.""
I looked up.
"What happened?""
"Three major investors received anonymous reports questioning your leadership.""
I frowned.
"Reports about what?""
"That you inherited control without experience.""
I almost smiled.
A familiar attack.
A woman with power must prove she deserves it.
A man with power is assumed qualified.
"Who sent them?""
"We’re investigating.""
I looked at the market data.
This was not random.
Julian was not attacking directly.
He was measuring reactions.
Testing weaknesses.
Like a chess player.
"Open communication with investors.""
Claire nodded.
"And the media?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because Julian wants noise.""
I looked at the screen.
"We give him silence.""
Three days later, Julian Cross finally appeared.
Not in person.
In an interview.
The world had barely seen him in years.
He sat calmly in front of a journalist.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Composed.
"I have no interest in destroying Ashcroft Holdings.""
The reporter asked:
"Then what do you want?""
Julian smiled.
"I want balance.""
A dangerous word.
Because powerful people often used it when they wanted control.
"I believe certain families have held too much influence for too long.""
The reporter glanced at the camera.
"Are you referring to the Ashcroft family?""
Julian paused.
"I’m referring to the belief that ownership should come with responsibility.""
I watched the interview from my office.
He was good.
Very good.
Better than Adrian.
Because Adrian wanted people to admire him.
Julian wanted people to agree with him.
That was much more dangerous.
That night, Adrian called.
I almost ignored him.
But something in my instincts told me to answer.
"Eleanor.""
His voice sounded different.
"I saw Julian’s interview.""
"So did I.""
"He’s going after you.""
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then:
"I know how he thinks.""
I was quiet.
"Why?""
"Because my father worked with him.""
I sat up.
"What?""
Adrian exhaled.
"My father never talked about it. But I found old files after everything happened.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Why are you telling me?""
Another pause.
"Because whatever happened between us...""
His voice softened.
"I don’t want to see him destroy you.""
Interesting.
The man who once tried to destroy me now wanted to protect me.
But I had learned something important.
Regret was not the same as redemption.
"Why should I trust you?""
"You shouldn’t.""
That answer surprised me.
Adrian continued.
"But you should know the truth.""
For once, he sounded honest.
"I think Julian was behind my father’s obsession with Ashcroft.""
I looked out the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
A war was coming.
And this time, it was bigger than a marriage.
May you like
Bigger than a company.
It was a battle over a legacy.
