Chapter 4: The CEO Who Lost Everything Overnight

The first thing Adrian did after losing control of Vale Meridian Group was blame everyone except himself.

That was exactly what I expected.

People like Adrian never believed they could fall.

They believed consequences were something that happened to other people.

By noon, his name had disappeared from the company’s internal systems.

His executive access had been revoked.

His corporate accounts had been frozen pending review.

The private office where he had spent five years giving orders was now locked.

A small metal sign on the door had already been replaced.

*Reserved for Executive Chairman.*

My office.

I stood outside that door for several seconds.

Not because I wanted to celebrate.

Because I remembered another version of myself standing in that same hallway years ago.

A younger Eleanor.

A woman who loved a man more than she loved protecting herself.

I remembered bringing Adrian coffee during his first months as CEO.

He would be exhausted from meetings, frustrated by investors, overwhelmed by expectations.

I believed in him.

I believed every late night.

Every sacrifice.

Every moment where he told me, "One day, Eleanor, everyone will know my name.""

They knew his name.

But they never knew who built the foundation beneath him.

My assistant Claire approached quietly.

"Are you okay?""

I looked at the door.

"I’m fine.""

She studied me.

Claire had worked for Ashcroft Holdings for seven years. She knew my history. She knew the truth about my marriage.

Unlike everyone else, she never underestimated me.

"Adrian’s lawyers are already contacting the board.""

"Of course they are.""

"He’s claiming the termination was personal retaliation.""

I almost smiled.

Personal retaliation.

That was the easiest accusation to make against a woman.

A woman takes control after being betrayed?

She must be emotional.

A man destroys his own career?

He must have been misunderstood.

"Let him claim whatever he wants," I said.

Claire nodded.

"There’s something else.""

"What?""

"Vanessa Laurent gave an interview request.""

I looked up.

"Already?""

"She wants to speak publicly.""

That was interesting.

Vanessa had always understood attention.

She knew exactly how to stand beside Adrian when cameras were around.

She knew how to smile.

How to appear elegant.

How to convince people she belonged among powerful people.

But she never understood power itself.

"Schedule a meeting with her.""

Claire looked surprised.

"Are you sure?""

"Yes.""

"Do you want security present?""

I considered it.

"No.""

Claire frowned.

"Eleanor.""

I smiled.

"I’m not afraid of Vanessa.""

Because I wasn’t.

The woman who tried to steal my husband never frightened me.

The woman I feared was the one I used to be.

The woman who stayed silent.

The woman who believed love could fix someone who did not want to change.

Vanessa arrived at Ashcroft Tower that afternoon.

She walked into my office wearing confidence like armor.

A designer handbag.

Perfect makeup.

A controlled expression.

She looked exactly like someone who believed she was still winning.

"Eleanor.""

She sat without waiting for permission.

Interesting.

Even after everything, she still thought she had a position here.

"I assume you know why I’m here.""

I looked through the documents in front of me.

"I assume you want something.""

Her smile tightened.

"I want fairness.""

That almost made me laugh.

"Fairness?""

"Adrian built that company.""

"No.""

My answer was immediate.

"He led that company.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Isn’t that the same thing?""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"Leadership is being trusted with something. Ownership is actually being responsible for it.""

For the first time, her confidence weakened.

She leaned forward.

"You hate me.""

I was quiet.

Because the answer was complicated.

I did not hate Vanessa.

Hate required caring.

And I was tired of giving people my energy.

"I don’t hate you.""

She seemed surprised.

"Then what?""

"I understand you.""

That was somehow worse for her.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I know why you chose Adrian.""

She looked away.

"You think I chose him because of money.""

"Didn’t you?""

Silence.

The silence answered for her.

I continued.

"You saw a powerful CEO. A famous name. A man who appeared to have everything.""

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

"You don’t know me.""

"You’re right.""

I closed the folder.

"But I know Adrian.""

That was the part she didn’t understand.

She thought she had stolen something valuable from me.

She never realized she had inherited a problem.

"Do you know what happens now?"" I asked.

She said nothing.

"Adrian has no company. No title. No influence.""

"He still has his reputation.""

I smiled.

"Reputation is fragile when people discover the truth.""

Her face changed.

"What truth?""

I slid a folder across the desk.

Vanessa hesitated before opening it.

Inside were records.

Luxury apartments.

Corporate payments.

Travel expenses.

The car registered through a subsidiary.

Every hidden benefit Adrian gave her using company resources.

Her face turned pale.

"You investigated me.""

"No.""

I corrected her.

"I investigated him.""

That was the difference.

Adrian’s betrayal had not just been personal.

It had been professional.

He did not simply cheat.

He risked the company he was trusted to protect.

Vanessa closed the folder.

"What are you going to do?""

I looked at her.

"That depends.""

"On what?""

"Whether you choose honesty now.""

For the first time since she entered, she looked afraid.

That evening, Adrian came to my home.

Not our home.

My home.

The mansion everyone thought belonged to him.

The property records had always told a different story.

The security guard called before allowing him inside.

"Eleanor, Adrian Vale is here.""

I looked outside.

His car sat in the driveway.

The same car he used to arrive at business events.

The same car journalists photographed.

The difference was that he no longer owned the confidence that came with it.

"Let him in.""

A few minutes later, Adrian entered the living room.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Angrier.

But still arrogant.

"You planned this.""

I sat across from him.

"No.""

"You waited years.""

"Yes.""

That answer surprised him.

"You admit it?""

"I waited because I hoped you would prove me wrong.""

He stared.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I wanted to believe the man I married was still somewhere inside you.""

For a moment, something changed in his face.

Regret.

Almost.

Then it disappeared.

"You destroyed me.""

I looked at him.

"No, Adrian.""

I stood.

"You destroyed yourself.""

He shook his head.

"You think you won?""

"No.""

I walked toward the window.

"I think I survived.""

That sentence hurt him more than any accusation.

Because Adrian knew.

Deep down.

He knew I was right.

"You’re my wife.""

The words sounded desperate now.

Not loving.

Possessive.

"I was.""

His eyes lifted.

"What?""

I removed my wedding ring from the table.

"I filed for divorce this morning.""

The room became silent.

For the first time all night, Adrian had no response.

Because losing the company hurt his pride.

But losing me?

That was the one thing he never believed could happen.

"Eleanor...""

I looked at him.

"The woman you embarrassed in front of four hundred people is gone.""

His face tightened.

"You don’t mean that.""

"I do.""

And that was the moment Adrian finally understood.

The empire he lost could be rebuilt.

The reputation he damaged could maybe be repaired.

May you like

But the woman who loved him before the world knew his name?

She was gone.
