Chapter 7: The Man Who Tried to Buy Back His Crown

Adrian Vale had always believed money could solve anything.

A problem with investors?

Schedule a dinner.

A difficult negotiation?

Offer a better deal.

A damaged reputation?

Hire a public relations team.

For years, that strategy worked.

Because people were willing to believe the version of Adrian Vale that he created.

The brilliant CEO.

The unstoppable businessman.

The self-made king.

But there was one thing money could not purchase.

The truth.

And Adrian was finally discovering that truth was the most expensive thing he had ever lost.

I learned about his next move before he made it public.

That was the advantage of controlling the company he once thought he owned.

Information moved differently when people stopped hiding things from you.

My assistant Claire walked into my office carrying a folder.

"He’s meeting with private investors tonight.""

I looked up from the financial reports in front of me.

"Which investors?""

She placed the folder down.

"Several former partners. Some international contacts. People who worked with him before the board removed him.""

I opened the file.

Adrian’s plan became obvious within seconds.

"He wants to create a new company.""

Claire nodded.

"Without Vale Meridian.""

Of course.

If Adrian could not reclaim the empire he lost, he would build a new one.

That was how he had always operated.

When something did not belong to him, he created a version where he was still the center.

"Who is funding him?""

Claire hesitated.

"That’s the interesting part.""

She turned the page.

"Vanessa.""

I looked at the information.

For a moment, I said nothing.

Then I understood.

Vanessa was not just standing beside Adrian.

She was trying to save him.

The woman who thought she was replacing me had discovered something I had known for years.

Adrian was impressive when everything was going well.

But when everything collapsed?

He looked for someone else to carry the weight.

"She’s investing her own money?"" I asked.

"Most of it.""

I leaned back.

That surprised me.

Not because I respected Vanessa.

Because I underestimated her.

Maybe she was not as naive as I thought.

Maybe she had finally realized she had attached herself to a man who only loved people when they benefited him.

"Let them build their company.""

Claire looked surprised.

"You’re not going to stop them?""

"No.""

"But if Adrian competes against Vale Meridian—"

"He won’t be competing against Vale Meridian.""

I looked through the glass windows of Ashcroft Tower.

"He’ll be competing against reality.""

That evening, Adrian met Vanessa at an expensive restaurant downtown.

I knew because the restaurant’s owner happened to be one of our investors.

Not everything in business was about control.

Sometimes it was simply about relationships built over decades.

Vanessa sat across from Adrian, looking less confident than she had at the gala.

"You said this would be different.""

Adrian looked irritated.

"It will be.""

"You said investors would support you.""

"They will.""

"Then why did three people cancel tonight?""

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"Because Eleanor is spreading lies.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Is she?""

The question stopped him.

"What?""

"I asked if she is lying.""

Adrian leaned back.

"What are you suggesting?""

Vanessa looked down at the table.

"I’m suggesting that maybe you didn’t tell me everything.""

There it was.

The question everyone eventually asked Adrian.

The question I had asked myself for years.

What else was he hiding?

"You knew about my marriage.""

"Not everything.""

"You knew enough.""

"No.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I knew you were unhappy.""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Because I was.""

"No.""

Her voice became sharper.

"Because you wanted to be.""

The sentence landed harder than any accusation.

Adrian stared at her.

For the first time, Vanessa was not the woman admiring him.

She was the woman challenging him.

"I gave up everything for you.""

Adrian’s expression changed.

"Everything?""

"Yes.""

She pulled out her phone.

"Do you know what people are saying?""

He looked away.

"People always talk.""

"They’re saying I was your escape.""

Silence.

"They’re saying you used me.""

Adrian frowned.

"That’s ridiculous.""

"Is it?""

She looked at him.

"When you were CEO, you made me feel like I was special.""

She swallowed.

"But now that you’re not powerful, I’m realizing something.""

"What?""

"You never talked about me.""

Adrian said nothing.

"You talked about what I represented.""

That was when she finally understood.

The same thing I had understood.

Adrian did not love people.

He loved reflections of himself.

The next morning, I received a message from an unexpected person.

Vanessa.

The message was simple.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at it for several minutes.

Claire noticed.

"Her?""

I nodded.

"Are you going to meet her?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Because sometimes the most important information came from people who had finally stopped protecting the wrong person.

We met at a quiet café outside the business district.

Vanessa arrived without designer clothes.

Without the confidence.

Without the performance.

She looked younger.

More human.

"I owe you an apology.""

I said nothing.

She looked uncomfortable.

"I know that probably doesn’t mean much.""

"No.""

My honesty surprised her.

"It doesn’t.""

She nodded.

"I deserve that.""

For the first time, I saw something real in her.

Regret.

"I thought I was winning.""

I looked at her.

"What changed?""

She laughed sadly.

"I watched him lose everything.""

A pause.

"And somehow, he still made it about himself.""

I understood.

Because that was Adrian.

"What do you want from me?""

She took a breath.

"To tell you something.""

She reached into her bag and placed a small drive on the table.

My eyes narrowed.

"What is this?""

"Evidence.""

I looked at her.

"Of what?""

"Everything Adrian did before the gala.""

That got my attention.

"Why are you giving this to me?""

Vanessa looked away.

"Because I finally realized I was never his partner.""

She looked back.

"I was his excuse.""

That night, I reviewed the files.

And what I discovered was worse than I expected.

Adrian had been planning his exit for months.

Not just an affair.

Not just betrayal.

A takeover.

He had created a private network of accounts.

He had been moving company opportunities toward businesses connected to him personally.

He was preparing to leave Vale Meridian after damaging it enough that he could purchase parts of it cheaply.

It was not just arrogance.

It was calculated.

Claire read through the documents beside me.

"Can this be proven?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn’t he hide it better?""

I looked at Adrian’s records.

"Because he never believed anyone would look.""

That was always Adrian’s weakness.

He believed people were beneath his attention.

He thought intelligence meant being the loudest person in the room.

He never understood that the quietest person was often the one collecting evidence.

The following morning, I called an emergency board meeting.

This time, Adrian was not invited.

But he still found out.

And he was furious.

Within hours, he released another statement.

This time, he attacked me personally.

He accused me of using my wealth to destroy him.

He claimed I was a controlling wife who could not accept rejection.

The public reaction was immediate.

Some people believed him.

Some didn’t.

But I had learned something important.

Truth delayed was still truth.

And Adrian had just given me the perfect opportunity to reveal everything.

The battle was no longer about a company.

May you like

It was about exposing the man behind the image.

And this time, Adrian would have nowhere left to hide.
