Chapter 9: The Stranger Who Knew Her Mother

Nia stared at the envelope for ten minutes before opening it.

It had been delivered to the school office.

No return address.

No sender name.

Only her name written carefully across the front.

Nia Bennett.

She almost threw it away.

Almost.

But something made her keep holding it.

Maybe it was the handwriting.

Maybe it was because deep down, she knew anything connected to her mother mattered.

When she finally opened it, a photograph slipped out.

Nia caught it before it touched the floor.

And when she saw it, she stopped breathing.

It was Rachel.

Her mother.

But not the way Nia remembered from old pictures.

This picture was different.

Rachel was laughing.

Really laughing.

She was standing outside somewhere, holding a small child.

Nia looked closer.

It was her.

A younger version of herself.

She had forgotten that moment.

But her mother hadn’t.

Behind the photograph was a note.

Nia,

You don’t know me, but I knew your mother.

I have something important to tell you.

Your mother never stopped fighting for you.

Not even at the end.

Nia’s hands shook.

She read the rest.

Before she died, Rachel discovered something that frightened her. She wanted to tell your father, but she wasn’t sure who she could trust.

Nia stopped.

Her heart began beating faster.

The note continued.

There are people who love you. But love does not always mean people make the right choices.

Nia froze.

The sentence sounded familiar.

Almost like something her father had said.

At the bottom was a phone number.

Call me when you’re ready.

Nia folded the note.

She didn’t know what to do.

Part of her wanted to call immediately.

Another part was tired.

Tired of secrets.

Tired of adults knowing things she didn’t.

When Marcus picked her up after school, he noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

Nia hesitated.

Then she handed him the envelope.

His face changed as he read it.

“Where did you get this?””

“Someone gave it to the office.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

His expression softened.

“Your mom loved this picture.””

“You knew it?””

“Yes.””

Nia looked at him.

“Who sent this?””

Marcus shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared her.

Because everyone seemed to know something.

Everyone except her.

At home, Marcus called the number.

A woman answered.

“Hello?””

“Who is this?””

The woman paused.

“Is this Marcus Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“I wondered if you would call.””

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Lauren.””

“Lauren who?””

“Lauren Pierce.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Vanessa heard it.

She walked into the room.

And froze.

Marcus noticed.

“You know her?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“No.””

But the hesitation gave her away.

Marcus lowered the phone.

“Nessa.””

She looked trapped.

“I knew of her.””

“Explain.””

Lauren was still on the line.

“I think you should let me explain.””

Marcus put the phone on speaker.

Lauren’s voice filled the room.

“I worked with Rachel.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“She was investigating something before she passed.””

“Investigating what?””

A pause.

“Financial records.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus looked at her.

“Why do you know Vanessa?””

Lauren answered before Vanessa could.

“Because Vanessa was involved.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked devastated.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“Lauren, what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Rachel asked me to help her understand where money was going.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

“Rachel suspected Vanessa?””

“No.””

Lauren’s answer came quickly.

“She suspected someone was using Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren continued.

“Rachel believed Vanessa was being manipulated.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

Lauren sighed.

“Rachel found evidence that someone was encouraging Vanessa to make certain choices.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know for sure.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

“The person who caused all of this was never Vanessa.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

Then at Nia.

The family had spent weeks uncovering secrets.

But now they were facing something much bigger.

Someone had been moving behind the scenes.

Someone had used grief.

Fear.

And trust.

And that person had been close enough to watch Nia lose pieces of herself.

Lauren’s final words made everyone go still.

“Marcus, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“Rachel left another message.””

“For who?””

A pause.

“For Nia.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Where is it?””

Lauren answered quietly.

“Hidden somewhere only Rachel and Nia would know.””

Nia’s eyes widened.

Because suddenly she remembered something.

A place from her childhood.

May you like

A place her mother always called their secret.

And she knew exactly where to look.
