Chapter 7: The Name On The Transaction

Marcus stared at the bank statement for nearly five minutes.

At first, he thought he had misunderstood.

He checked the date.

Then the amount.

Then the name.

Again.

And again.

Because the name attached to the transaction was impossible.

Rachel Bennett.

His wife had been dead for years.

The account was supposed to have been untouched.

The money was supposed to be protected for Nia.

But the records showed something that made no sense.

A withdrawal had been made months after Rachel’s death.

Not by Vanessa.

Not by Marcus.

By someone using Rachel’s information.

Marcus immediately called his attorney.

“I need you to look at something.””

“What did you find?””

“I found a withdrawal from Rachel’s account after she died.””

There was a long pause.

“That shouldn’t be possible.””

“That’s what I thought.””

“Send me the documents.””

Marcus did.

Then he sat alone in his office.

For the first time since everything began, his anger shifted.

He had spent days believing Vanessa was the only person who had failed Nia.

But now he wasn’t sure.

And that scared him.

Because if there was another person involved, then Nia had been carrying pain caused by secrets she didn’t even know existed.

That evening, Marcus didn’t tell Nia yet.

He had learned something important.

Truth mattered.

But timing mattered too.

A child should not have to discover every betrayal at once.

When he arrived home, Nia was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

“Dad.””

“Hey, baby.””

She smiled slightly.

It was a small thing.

But Marcus noticed.

A few weeks ago, she would have looked nervous when he entered the room.

Now she looked comfortable.

Like she believed she belonged.

He kissed her forehead.

“How was school?””

“Okay.””

“Just okay?””

She shrugged.

“I got an A on my science test.””

Marcus smiled.

“That’s not just okay.””

Nia smiled.

“I know.””

It was a simple conversation.

A normal father-and-daughter moment.

And Marcus almost forgot the paperwork sitting in his office.

Almost.

Later that night, after the kids were asleep, Vanessa found him.

“You look worried.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

She sat across from him.

“Is it about me?””

He looked at her.

For the first time, he noticed something different.

She wasn’t defensive.

She wasn’t angry.

She was afraid.

“No.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What happened?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he handed her the statement.

She read it.

Her face changed.

“I don’t understand.””

“Neither do I.””

“This isn’t me.””

“I know.””

Vanessa looked up.

“You believe me?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I believe you didn’t make this transaction.””

The words mattered.

Because trust between them had been damaged.

But not completely destroyed.

Vanessa looked back at the paper.

“Who could have done this?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because one possibility had already entered his mind.

And he hated it.

The next morning, Marcus called someone he hadn’t spoken to in years.

Rachel’s older sister, Emily.

Emily answered after three rings.

“Marcus?””

Her voice was surprised.

They rarely talked anymore.

Not because of anger.

Because grief had created distance.

“I need to ask you something.””

A pause.

“About Rachel?””

“Yes.””

Emily became quiet.

“What happened?””

Marcus explained the account.

When he finished, Emily didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“I knew this would happen eventually.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“Marcus…”

Her voice trembled.

“There are things Rachel never told you.””

His heart sank.

“What things?””

Emily sighed.

“Before she got sick, she was worried.””

“About what?””

“About money.””

Marcus stood.

“Why?””

“Because she thought someone was watching it.””

The room felt colder.

“Watching it?””

“Yes.””

Emily continued.

“Rachel didn’t trust everyone around her.””

Marcus thought about the letter.

The warning.

The questions Vanessa asked.

“Who did she suspect?””

Emily hesitated.

Then said:

“She never told me a name.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“But she knew something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Emily lowered her voice.

“She said if anything happened to her, you needed to protect Nia.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“I already knew that.””

“No, Marcus.””

Emily’s voice became serious.

“She said protect Nia from people who loved her.””

That sentence stayed with him.

Because it changed everything.

Not strangers.

Not enemies.

People who loved her.

After the call ended, Marcus sat in silence.

Because now he had a terrifying question.

Who else had been making decisions for Nia?

And how far back did it go?

That afternoon, Marcus reviewed every document connected to Rachel’s estate.

Every account.

Every transfer.

Every signature.

Then he found something.

A name appeared repeatedly.

A person who had access.

A person who had helped Rachel organize finances.

A person Marcus trusted.

His own brother.

Daniel.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“No.””

But the evidence was there.

Daniel had accessed the account.

Daniel had transferred money.

Daniel had signed documents.

Marcus immediately called him.

Daniel answered cheerfully.

“Brother. Long time.””

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“What did you do?””

Silence.

The cheerful tone disappeared.

“What are you talking about?””

“You accessed Rachel’s account.””

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Daniel.””

Finally, his brother sighed.

“I knew this day would come.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Why?””

“Because Rachel asked me to.””

The answer made no sense.

“What?””

“Marcus, you need to understand.””

“No. You need to explain.””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“Rachel didn’t trust you to handle everything after she was gone.””

Marcus felt the words hit.

“Why?””

“Because you were grieving.””

“So you stole from my daughter?””

“No!””

Daniel sounded offended.

“I protected her.””

Marcus laughed once.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel went silent.

“I didn’t spend the money.””

“Then where is it?””

“Safe.””

“Where?””

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

Marcus looked out the window.

“Then come here.””

Daniel hesitated.

“When?””

“Tonight.””

After hanging up, Marcus sat back.

His family had become a maze of secrets.

Vanessa had hidden memories.

Daniel had hidden money.

Someone had made choices about Nia’s life without asking her.

May you like

And Marcus was beginning to understand the most painful truth.

The people who claimed they were protecting Nia had spent years taking away her right to choose.
