Chapter 6: The Family Meeting

The family meeting happened on a Sunday morning.

Marcus chose that day because he wanted everyone present.

No distractions.

No excuses.

Just the truth.

Caleb and Ava sat on the couch, confused.

They knew something serious was happening.

They just didn’t know what.

Nia sat beside Marcus.

Vanessa sat across from them.

For once, nobody pretended everything was normal.

Marcus looked at the children.

“There are things we need to talk about.””

Caleb looked nervous.

“Are we in trouble?””

Marcus softened.

“No.””

He looked at all three children.

“This isn’t about blaming anyone.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“It’s about honesty.””

Vanessa nodded.

Her eyes were red from crying.

“I owe Nia an apology.””

Ava looked at her mother.

“For what?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“For treating Nia differently.””

Caleb looked confused.

“You did?””

The question hurt Vanessa.

Because even her own children hadn’t realized.

That was how invisible Nia had become.

“I made mistakes,” Vanessa said.

Big ones.

She explained without excuses.

She explained the things she took.

The memories she hid.

The money she moved.

The choices she made.

Caleb stared.

“That was Nia’s?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava looked at Nia.

“I thought you didn’t want new stuff.””

Nia looked down.

“I did.””

The room became quiet.

Because that was the truth everyone needed to hear.

Nia had wanted things.

She had just stopped asking.

Caleb looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

“But I should have.””

Nia looked at him.

He was only nine.

He wasn’t the person who made those choices.

Neither was Ava.

Marcus watched the moment carefully.

Because this was the difference between anger and healing.

Nia wasn’t becoming cruel because she had been hurt.

She was learning how to be honest.

Vanessa looked at her.

“I know saying sorry doesn’t fix everything.””

Nia nodded.

“No.””

Vanessa accepted that.

“I know.””

A pause.

Then Nia asked:

“Are you leaving?””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus watched them both.

Because the answer mattered.

Not because he wanted Vanessa to stay.

Not because he wanted her to leave.

Because it needed to be Nia’s choice too.

Vanessa looked at the girl she had hurt.

“If I leave, I understand.””

Nia studied her.

Then she said something nobody expected.

“I don’t want you to leave.””

Vanessa started crying.

“But I don’t want you to pretend it didn’t happen.””

“I won’t.””

“And I don’t want you to act like you’re my mom.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I understand.””

Nia looked down.

“But maybe you can learn how to be someone who cares about me.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Because that was more kindness than she deserved.

Marcus reached for Nia’s hand.

The family wasn’t healed.

Not even close.

There would be consequences.

There would be rebuilding.

There would be trust to earn.

But for the first time in years, everyone was finally standing in the same room with the truth.

And sometimes, the truth was the only place a broken family could begin again.

But Marcus still didn’t know one thing.

The investigation into Nia’s account had uncovered another transaction.

One that Vanessa didn’t make.

One that happened after Rachel died.

And when Marcus discovered whose name was attached to it, he realized someone else had been hiding secrets too. :::
