Chapter 5: The Letter Hidden In The Wall
Three days later, Marcus found the letter.
And the moment he saw it, he knew Vanessa had been hiding more than he admitted.
It happened while he was cleaning out the old storage room.
The room had once belonged to Rachel.
After her death, Marcus couldn’t bring himself to change it.
So Vanessa eventually packed everything away.
Or at least, that was what he believed.
Behind an old wooden shelf, Marcus noticed something strange.
A small envelope wedged between the wall and the furniture.
His name was written on it.
Marcus Bennett.
His hands went cold.
Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.
Rachel.
He sat down before opening it.
The letter was dated two weeks before Rachel died.
Marcus read slowly.
My love,
If you are reading this, something happened that I never wanted to happen.
His heart tightened.
Rachel had been sick for months.
But she always told him she would be okay.
She always smiled.
She always protected everyone else from her fear.
The letter continued.
I need you to promise me something. Whatever happens, make sure Nia always knows she was loved.
Marcus closed his eyes.
A tear fell onto the paper.
The letter wasn’t long.
But every sentence felt like Rachel was sitting beside him again.
Then he reached the final paragraph.
There is something I need to tell you about Vanessa.
Marcus stopped.
His breathing changed.
Vanessa?
Rachel continued.
I know you trust her. I know you believe she will help you. But please be careful.
Marcus stared.
Why would Rachel write that?
The next sentence answered him.
Before we got sick, Vanessa asked me questions about my finances and Nia’s future.
Marcus’s hand tightened around the letter.
Rachel had noticed.
She knew.
I don’t want you to assume the worst of her. People act differently when they are afraid. But promise me you will protect Nia’s inheritance and her memories.
Marcus read that sentence again.
And again.
Rachel wasn’t accusing Vanessa.
She was warning him.
There was a difference.
At that moment, Marcus heard footsteps.
He looked up.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
She had seen the letter.
Her face was completely pale.
“Where did you find that?””
Marcus slowly stood.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Did you know?””
Her silence was enough.
Marcus felt something inside him crack.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I found it after Rachel died.””
“You found it?””
“Yes.””
“And you hid it?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was scared.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He held up the letter.
“Everyone was scared except Nia.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
She sat down.
“I was angry.””
Marcus said nothing.
“I was angry because Rachel trusted me.””
His expression hardened.
“She trusted you with her daughter.””
“I know.””
“No. I don’t think you do.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“She wrote that letter before she died. She knew she might not be there. And she still trusted you.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because when I read it, I felt like I had already failed.””
Marcus stared.
“She wrote about protecting Nia.””
“Yes.””
“And you saw that as an attack?””
Vanessa cried.
“I saw it as proof that everyone believed Rachel was better than me.””
Marcus was silent.
Because that was the root of everything.
Vanessa had spent years fighting a person who wasn’t even there.
And Nia had paid the price.
“I never wanted to hurt her,” Vanessa whispered.
Marcus looked at the letter.
“Intent doesn’t erase damage.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
That evening, Marcus sat with Nia.
He didn’t hide anything.
Not the letter.
Not Vanessa finding it.
Not the mistakes.
Nia listened quietly.
When he finished, she touched the paper.
“Mom wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“She knew?””
Marcus nodded.
“She always protected you.””
Nia smiled sadly.
“I wish I remembered her better.””
Marcus held her hand.
“She remembered you enough for both of you.””
For the first time since everything came out, Nia smiled.
A real smile.
But upstairs, Vanessa heard everything.
And she realized something painful.
She had spent years trying to make Nia need her.
But the truth was, Nia never needed her to replace Rachel.
May you like
She needed Vanessa to simply love her.
And Vanessa had forgotten the difference.
