Chapter 8: The Brother Who Thought He Was Saving Her

Daniel arrived at Marcus’s house at seven-thirty.

Nia was upstairs.

Caleb and Ava were watching television.

Vanessa sat quietly in the living room.

Nobody spoke when Daniel entered.

The tension was obvious.

Daniel looked older than Marcus remembered.

More tired.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

“Where’s Nia?”” Daniel asked.

“Upstairs.””

“Good.””

Marcus noticed.

“You don’t want her here?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“That’s not what I mean.””

“Then explain.””

Daniel sat down.

“I loved Rachel.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words surprised him.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Marcus.

“Rachel was terrified before she died.””

Marcus’s expression softened.

“I know she was sick.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She was scared of what would happen after.””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She knew you loved Nia. She knew you would do anything for her.””

“Then why involve you?””

“Because she thought you would be too emotional.””

The words hurt.

But Marcus listened.

“She knew you would want to protect Nia from everything.””

Marcus looked away.

“That’s my job.””

“Yes.””

Daniel nodded.

“But Rachel worried you would let people make decisions because you were trying to hold the family together.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She worried you wouldn’t see what was happening.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Rachel suspected me?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

That surprised everyone.

“She suspected everyone.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel continued.

“Rachel loved people deeply. That was her weakness.””

Marcus frowned.

“What are you saying?””

“She believed good people could make bad choices.””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She didn’t want you to hate anyone.””

Marcus looked at the documents.

“Then why did you move the money?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because Rachel asked me.””

Marcus waited.

“After she died, the account was supposed to stay untouched. But there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Someone tried to access it.””

Marcus froze.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Rachel asked me not to panic you.””

Marcus stood.

“She was dead.””

Daniel flinched.

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

Marcus’s voice broke.

“You and Vanessa keep talking about what Rachel wanted. What about what Nia wanted?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question everyone avoided.

What did Nia want?

Not what adults thought was best.

Not what they believed was protection.

What did she actually want?

Daniel looked ashamed.

“You’re right.””

Marcus sat down.

“Where is the money?””

Daniel reached into his bag.

He placed a folder on the table.

“It’s all there.””

Marcus opened it.

The account information was complete.

The money was untouched.

Daniel had moved it into another protected account.

For years.

Marcus stared.

“So you didn’t steal it.””

“No.””

“But you lied.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I was doing the right thing.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She made mistakes.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“And I made mistakes.””

Marcus closed the folder.

“Everyone made mistakes.””

His voice became heavy.

“But Nia was the one who paid for them.””

That night, Marcus called Nia downstairs.

She sat beside him.

Daniel looked nervous.

“This is your uncle Daniel.””

Nia smiled politely.

“Hi.””

Daniel looked at her.

And his expression changed.

Because he saw Rachel.

Not her face.

Her kindness.

Her eyes.

“I owe you an apology.””

Nia looked confused.

“For what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I made decisions about your life without asking you.””

Nia looked at Marcus.

Then back at Daniel.

“Why?””

Daniel struggled to answer.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Nia’s expression became sad.

“Everyone says that.””

The words destroyed him.

Because she was right.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But nobody had asked her.

“I’m sorry,” Daniel whispered.

Nia nodded.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

A pause.

“But I wish someone had trusted me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing to say.

Later that night, Marcus stood outside on the porch.

Vanessa joined him.

“I heard what she said.””

Marcus nodded.

“She’s right.””

“Yes.””

They stood quietly.

Then Vanessa said:

“I don’t know if she’ll ever forgive me.””

Marcus looked toward the house.

“Maybe forgiveness isn’t the first thing she needs.””

“What does she need?””

“Consistency.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I can do that.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Can you?””

She met his eyes.

“Yes.””

For the first time, he believed she meant it.

But the next morning, everything changed.

Because Nia received a package at school.

Inside was something that made her cry.

A photograph.

May you like

A letter.

And a message from someone who claimed to know the truth about Rachel’s final days.
