Chapter 11: The Person Behind The Lies

Marcus didn’t sleep.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was thinking.

Every piece of the puzzle connected to one person.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

The accounts.

The hidden documents.

The advice.

The decisions.

Someone had influenced the people around Nia.

But why?

The next morning, Marcus called Lauren again.

“I need the truth.””

Lauren sighed.

“I was hoping you would ask.””

“What did Rachel find?””

“She found unusual activity connected to several accounts.””

“Whose accounts?””

“Not just hers.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Your family’s accounts.””

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Explain.””

“Rachel noticed money moving in ways that didn’t make sense.””

“From where?””

“Different places.””

“Who had access?””

Lauren paused.

Then said:

“One person appears repeatedly.””

Marcus already knew.

“Who?””

“Your father.””

Marcus froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Marcus sat down.

His father had been dead for three years.

A man he remembered as strict.

Distant.

But family.

“No.””

Lauren continued.

“I’m not saying he stole anything.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Rachel believed someone in the family had been making decisions without telling others.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

His entire life suddenly felt less certain.

“My father?””

“Rachel didn’t accuse him.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Lauren sighed.

“Because Rachel was careful. She didn’t want to destroy relationships without proof.””

Marcus thought about his mother.

His father.

The family business.

The years of conflict nobody discussed.

Then he remembered something.

A conversation.

Years ago.

His father had told him:

“You’re too soft, Marcus. People take advantage of kindness.””

At the time, Marcus thought it was criticism.

Now he wondered if it was a warning.

That afternoon, Marcus went through old family records.

He found something unexpected.

A company file.

A transfer.

A signature.

His father’s.

And beside it…

A name.

Vanessa.

Marcus stared.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just influenced.

She had been connected to his family long before he knew.

When he confronted her, she immediately looked frightened.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

Vanessa sat down.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“How long?””

“Before Rachel died.””

Marcus felt betrayed.

“You knew my family?””

“My father worked with yours.””

That surprised him.

“What?””

“Years ago.””

Vanessa looked down.

“My family had financial problems. Your father helped us.””

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“And then?””

“And then he introduced me to you.””

The room went silent.

Marcus remembered meeting Vanessa.

He remembered thinking it was fate.

Now it felt different.

“Are you saying my father arranged our relationship?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“Not like that.””

“Then what?””

“He thought we would be good for each other.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Good for each other.””

He repeated the words.

“Did Rachel know?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She knew about my family.””

“And she trusted you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She tried.””

That hurt.

Because Rachel had tried with everyone.

Even people who failed her.

Marcus walked away.

He needed answers.

Not more secrets.

That evening, Daniel came over.

Marcus confronted him immediately.

“You knew Vanessa before I did.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

“Everything matters now.””

Daniel sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No more.””

The words were sharp.

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””

Daniel looked down.

“You’re right.””

Marcus sat.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel finally did.

The truth came out slowly.

Vanessa’s family had struggled financially.

Marcus’s father had helped them.

But later, there were disagreements.

Money disappeared.

Trust broke.

Rachel discovered pieces of it.

She started asking questions.

And then she got sick.

Marcus listened.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Rachel asked us not to.””

Marcus looked shocked.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s answer was quiet.

“Because she thought you would destroy yourself trying to fix everything.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

That sounded exactly like Rachel.

Always protecting him.

Even from the truth.

But now he had a bigger question.

“What happened to my father?””

Daniel hesitated.

“He left behind something.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

Marcus looked up.

“Where?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I have it.””

The next morning, Marcus read his father’s final words.

And one sentence changed everything.

I made a mistake that affected more people than I realized.

Marcus stared at the page.

Because now he understood.

The story wasn’t about one person hurting Nia.

May you like

It was about generations of people hiding pain.

And Nia had inherited the consequences.
