Chapter 8: My Mother’s Second Letter

Michael asked me to meet him at his office that evening.

I almost refused.

I was tired of rooms where men in suits explained pieces of my own life to me.

But Patricia’s words wouldn’t leave my head.

Ask Michael why your mother stopped trusting his firm.

So at seven-thirty, I sat across from Michael in a quiet office overlooking downtown Dallas.

He placed a wooden box on the desk.

It was old.

Scratched.

And immediately familiar.

I touched the corner.

My mother used to keep family photographs in it.

“Where did you find this?””

“It was deposited with our firm.””

“By my mother?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t I receive it when she died?””

Michael’s silence made my stomach tighten.

“Answer me.””

He sat down.

“Because your mother instructed us not to release it unless specific conditions occurred.””

“What conditions?””

“Your divorce.””

I stared at him.

My mother had prepared for my marriage to fail before it even began.

That hurt.

Not because she had doubted me.

Because she had seen something I couldn’t.

Michael pushed the box toward me.

“There is another letter.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs, bank statements, a small silver bracelet from my childhood, and a sealed envelope.

For Sarah. Only if Daniel breaks the promise.

My throat tightened.

“What promise?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“That is what the letter explains.””

I opened it.

Sarah,

If this letter has reached you, then Daniel made a choice I prayed he would never make.

I stopped.

Daniel?

Not Patricia.

Daniel.

I kept reading.

You may believe I distrusted him from the beginning. I did not. There was a time when Daniel came to me alone and told me he loved you.

I looked up.

“That happened?””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother documented the meeting.””

The letter continued.

Daniel knew about my investment. He knew what marrying you could eventually mean. But he promised me he would never touch your inheritance without your informed consent.

My eyes burned.

He had promised her.

Then broken it.

I kept reading.

His mother is the person I fear. Patricia believes the Whitmore name gives her ownership over everyone connected to it.

But Daniel still has a choice.

Never confuse weakness with innocence.

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt.

For years, I blamed Patricia for controlling him.

I told myself Daniel was weak.

Caught between his wife and mother.

But weakness did not explain forged signatures.

Weakness did not explain secret accounts.

Weakness did not explain bringing Jessica into our marriage.

He had chosen.

Again and again.

A knock came at the office door.

Michael frowned.

“We’re not expecting anyone.””

His assistant opened it.

Jessica stood outside.

Her mascara was gone.

Her hair was pulled back.

And the expensive dress had been replaced by jeans and a sweater.

She looked younger.

And terrified.

“I need to speak to Sarah.””

Michael stood.

“How did you find us?””

“Your card was in the folder.””

She looked at me.

“Please.””

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

Jessica entered and placed a flash drive on the desk.

“I copied Daniel’s private files.””

Michael picked it up.

“What’s on this?””

“Payments. Emails. Audio recordings.””

I stared at her.

“Audio?””

Jessica nodded.

“Daniel records meetings sometimes. He says it protects him.””

“From what?””

“Everyone.””

That sounded exactly like him.

She sat across from me.

“I need you to understand something.””

I waited.

“I knew Daniel before your wedding.””

My chest tightened.

“But I wasn’t his girlfriend.””

“What were you?””

“My father worked for Whitmore Enterprises.””

She swallowed.

“He discovered money disappearing from the company.””

Michael became very still.

“What was his name?””

“Robert Carter.””

Michael’s face changed.

I noticed immediately.

“You knew him.””

Michael sat slowly.

“Yes.””

Jessica looked at me.

“My father died believing Daniel’s family destroyed his career.””

I stared at her.

“Then why work for Daniel?””

“Because I wanted proof.””

That answer changed everything.

The affair.

The job.

The photograph.

Maybe Jessica hadn’t entered Daniel’s life because Patricia chose her.

Maybe she entered because she was searching for something.

“Did you sleep with him to get evidence?””

Jessica’s eyes filled.

“No.””

She looked ashamed.

“I got too close. I believed him. That part was real.””

I believed her.

Because manipulation had a familiar face.

I had lived with it.

Michael inserted the flash drive into an offline laptop.

Folders appeared.

Payments.

Contracts.

Audio.

One file was dated three weeks before I filed for divorce.

Jessica pointed to it.

“That’s the one.””

Michael clicked.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

Then Patricia’s.

“If Sarah discovers where the money went, the marriage won’t matter.””

Daniel answered.

“She won’t.””

Patricia laughed softly.

“And if she does?””

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Then we make sure she looks like the thief.””

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because suddenly I understood the divorce wasn’t only designed to take my money.

It was designed to leave me holding the blame.
