Chapter 10: The Box Hidden In The Walls

The red metal box haunted me before I ever saw it.

Maybe because I already knew what it represented.

A secret.

A secret Daniel and Patricia had protected for years.

A secret my mother had tried to leave behind.

We drove to the old Whitmore house just before midnight.

Michael drove.

Jessica sat beside me in the back seat, staring out the window.

Nobody spoke much.

There was nothing left to say.

Too many truths had already been uncovered.

When we arrived, the house looked exactly as I remembered.

Large.

Beautiful.

Cold.

I had attended countless family dinners there.

I had decorated those rooms for Christmas.

I had cleaned the kitchen after Patricia’s parties.

And now I was looking at it like a crime scene.

Michael stopped the car.

“Stay behind me.””

I looked at him.

“I’m done staying behind people.””

He gave me a small nod.

“I understand.””

Jessica looked toward the house.

“My father used to work here.””

“You never came here after he died?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“Patricia made sure I couldn’t.””

The front door was slightly open.

That immediately felt wrong.

Michael noticed too.

“Someone left in a hurry.””

We entered slowly.

The house was dark.

Only the moonlight coming through the windows showed the furniture.

Then I heard it.

A sound upstairs.

A drawer closing.

Michael raised his hand.

We stopped.

Footsteps moved across the hallway above us.

Jessica whispered,

“Daniel.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

We walked upstairs.

The old wooden floor creaked beneath our feet.

The sound stopped.

Then a voice came from the bedroom.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Daniel stepped out.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the confident businessman from the courthouse.

Like someone who had spent hours losing a battle.

In his hand was the red metal box.

I stared at it.

“You found it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to fix this.””

I almost laughed.

“By hiding more evidence?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

That sentence made me angry.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend this is about me.””

His expression changed.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to use my name like that anymore.””

Daniel looked down.

For once, he had no argument.

Michael held out his hand.

“Give me the box.””

Daniel tightened his grip.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“Then explain.””

He stared at the box.

“My father kept records.””

“Of what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Everything.””

The room became silent.

“Everything about the company. Every payment. Every agreement.””

Jessica stepped forward.

“Then why hide it?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because my mother destroyed my father.””

Those words shocked everyone.

Even him.

It sounded like something he had been holding inside for years.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

“My father found out Patricia was moving money.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“From the company?””

Daniel nodded.

“She convinced him it was temporary. She said she was protecting the family.””

Jessica whispered,

“That’s what she always says.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I found out after you married me.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared.

“Afraid of your mother?””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

But it didn’t save him.

Because fear explained his silence.

It didn’t excuse his choices.

“What happened next?”” Michael asked.

Daniel opened the box.

Inside were documents.

A small recorder.

And a handwritten notebook.

“My father left this.””

Michael picked up the notebook.

He opened the first page.

Then froze.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Sarah.””

I stepped closer.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s handwriting.

I touched the page.

“She was here.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“My mother knew my father.””

Michael turned the page.

And read the first line.

“Richard, if Patricia discovers what we found, Sarah will be in danger.””

My heart stopped.

Danger.

Not financial danger.

Not emotional danger.

Something worse.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

Michael continued reading.

“The documents proving ownership must remain hidden until Sarah is old enough to protect herself.””

I felt tears forming.

My mother hadn’t just protected my money.

She had protected me.

Jessica pointed to the recorder.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at it.

“My father’s final recording.””

Nobody moved.

Michael pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

Richard Whitmore.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“If you are hearing this, Patricia has probably found out about the documents.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“Daniel, if you are listening, remember this. Protect Sarah. She is not a tool for this family.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

A tear slipped down his face.

May you like

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“Because Patricia did not act alone.””
