Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I couldn’t hear anything after that.
The courthouse steps blurred around me.
People walked past.
Cars moved along the street.
But all I could focus on was one sentence.
Someone forged my signature.
Nine years.
That was how long I had lived inside a marriage built on lies.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me he’s wrong.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
“Daniel.””
He finally looked at me.
“Sarah, it’s complicated.””
I laughed.
A broken, empty laugh.
“Complicated?””
I held up the divorce papers.
“You cheated on me. Your mother humiliated me. You replaced me before our marriage even ended. And now you’re telling me my entire life was built on something fake?””
Jessica looked uncomfortable.
“Sarah, I didn’t know about any of this.””
I turned toward her.
“You didn’t know?””
She looked down.
“I swear.””
I wanted to believe her.
But then I remembered the photograph.
The young Jessica standing beside my husband years before she became his assistant.
Before she became the woman everyone told me not to worry about.
Michael looked at Jessica.
“Ms. Carter, perhaps you should explain your involvement.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
Daniel immediately stepped in.
“Leave her out of this.””
Michael raised an eyebrow.
“That is interesting.””
“What?””
“You’re defending her before defending yourself.””
Daniel said nothing.
Patricia suddenly grabbed Jessica’s arm.
“We’re leaving.””
Jessica pulled away.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Even Patricia.
Jessica’s eyes filled with tears.
“No, I’m tired of pretending.””
My heart started beating faster.
Because I knew that look.
The look of someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Jessica, don’t.””
She looked at him.
“You promised me.””
Those three words changed the atmosphere instantly.
Patricia’s face went pale.
I stepped closer.
“Promised you what?””
Jessica wiped her eyes.
“I thought Daniel loved me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Jessica, stop.””
But she continued.
“He told me you were only staying because of money.””
My chest tightened.
“He said that?””
She nodded slowly.
“He said Patricia hated you because you were trying to take everything.””
I looked at Patricia.
The irony almost made me smile.
They had spent years accusing me of chasing money.
While hiding the truth about my own money.
Michael opened his folder again.
“Ms. Carter, would you like to tell Mrs. Bennett about the account?””
Daniel immediately turned.
“What account?””
Jessica froze.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“What account?”” I repeated.
Jessica looked terrified.
“I shouldn’t say anything.””
Michael spoke calmly.
“You already know enough to understand the consequences.””
Daniel stepped toward him.
“You’re threatening her?””
“No,” Michael replied.
“I’m giving her an opportunity to tell the truth.””
Patricia’s voice became cold.
“Jessica, remember who helped you.””
Jessica looked at her.
And something changed.
Because suddenly, I realized Patricia didn’t see Jessica as family.
She saw her as a tool.
A replacement.
Just like she had seen me.
Jessica took a deep breath.
“Patricia helped pay my apartment.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“What?””
Jessica continued.
“She told me Daniel would leave Sarah eventually.””
The world seemed to tilt.
Nine years.
Nine years of believing I lost my husband because I wasn’t enough.
But maybe I never lost him.
Maybe he was taken away from me before I even knew there was a fight.
Patricia snapped.
“You ungrateful girl.””
Jessica stepped back.
“I kept your secret for years.””
“What secret?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Jessica looked at Daniel.
Then at Patricia.
And whispered:
“The money didn’t come from the company.””
Michael looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, you need to hear this.””
I stared at Jessica.
“What did you find?””
She slowly reached into her purse.
And pulled out a small envelope.
An envelope with my name written on it.
But I had never seen it before.
Jessica handed it to me.
“Daniel told me to destroy this.””
My fingers trembled as I took it.
“What is inside?””
Jessica looked at Daniel.
And Daniel suddenly stopped pretending.
Because for the first time…
he looked like a man who knew he had lost control.
May you like
“Sarah,” he whispered.
“Please don’t open that.””
