Chapter 12: The Man Who Started Everything
Victor Hale looked nothing like the monster I imagined.
That was the most frightening part.
He looked ordinary.
A gray suit.
A calm smile.
A polite expression.
The kind of man strangers trusted.
The kind of man who could destroy lives without raising his voice.
Patricia stood beside him.
And suddenly, I understood something.
She had never been the entire plan.
She had been one piece.
Victor looked at Daniel.
“You disappointed me.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stay away from her.””
Victor smiled.
“Now you want to protect her?””
Daniel said nothing.
Victor looked at me.
“Sarah Bennett.””
I hated how familiar my name sounded in his mouth.
“You look like your mother.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew her.””
“Yes.””
“What did you do to her?””
Patricia interrupted.
“Sarah, don’t be dramatic.””
I turned toward her.
“Dramatic?””
My voice shook.
“You spent nine years lying to me.””
Victor laughed softly.
“She always had her mother’s courage.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You were involved from the beginning.””
Victor nodded.
“Of course.””
That answer stunned me.
No denial.
No excuse.
Just confidence.
Michael stepped forward.
“You realize everything is documented.””
Victor looked at him.
“Do you think documents scare me?””
Michael’s expression remained calm.
“They should.””
Victor smiled.
“No. What scares people is losing control.””
He looked at me.
“And Sarah, you are the one thing I never expected.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Patricia looked annoyed.
“Victor, stop talking.””
He ignored her.
“Your mother was supposed to disappear quietly.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What did you say?””
Victor smiled.
“Your mother discovered too much.””
The room became silent.
I could barely breathe.
“You’re saying…”
Victor nodded.
“She was getting close to the truth.””
Michael’s voice became sharper.
“Be careful what you admit.””
Victor laughed.
“Admit?””
He looked around.
“Do you really think I’m worried?””
Then he pointed at Daniel.
“Your husband spent years cleaning up your mother’s mistakes.””
Daniel looked furious.
“I never helped you.””
Victor smiled.
“You did more than you realize.””
I turned to Daniel.
“What does he mean?””
Daniel looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You knew.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Sarah…”
“You knew something.””
“I knew my mother was hiding things.””
“And you stayed.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
That single word hurt.
Not because I didn’t expect it.
Because I did.
Victor watched us like he was enjoying the pain.
“People always think betrayal is one big moment.””
He smiled.
“It isn’t.””
He stepped closer.
“It is thousands of small choices.””
I looked at him.
“You ruined my family.””
“No.””
Victor shook his head.
“Your family ruined itself.””
He looked at Patricia.
She looked away.
Even she didn’t seem comfortable anymore.
Michael quietly moved toward his phone.
Victor noticed.
“Recording me?””
Michael stopped.
Victor smiled.
“Good.””
He actually smiled.
“Save it.””
Everyone looked confused.
Victor reached into his coat.
And pulled out a document.
“I was hoping this would happen.””
He placed it on the table.
Sarah Bennett.
My name.
Again.
I stared.
“What is that?””
Victor smiled.
“The final agreement your mother signed.””
My body went cold.
“My mother never signed anything with you.””
Victor leaned back.
“That’s what you believe.””
I grabbed the paper.
The signature at the bottom made my heart stop.
Because it looked exactly like my mother’s.
Michael stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Victor smiled.
“Is it?””
I looked at him.
“What did you make her sign?””
His smile disappeared.
And for the first time…
he looked serious.
“Something that gave me control.””
I looked down at the document.
Then at my name.
Because the last line wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about property.
It was about ownership.

And the person listed as the beneficiary…
was Daniel Whitmore.
