Chapter 11: The Person Behind Patricia

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

Because one sentence had changed the entire story.

Patricia did not act alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who else?””

He didn’t answer.

Michael looked through the documents.

“Richard suspected someone else was involved.””

Jessica picked up the notebook.

“There are names.””

She turned pages quickly.

Then stopped.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She handed it to Michael.

He read silently.

Then looked up.

“Robert Carter.””

Jessica froze.

“My father?””

I looked at her.

She looked like she might collapse.

“My father was involved?””

Michael shook his head.

“Not necessarily.””

He pointed to the notes.

“Richard wrote that Robert helped uncover financial irregularities.””

Jessica covered her mouth.

“My father wasn’t stealing.””

“No,” Michael said.

“He was investigating.””

That changed everything.

Jessica sat down.

“My whole life, I thought my father lost everything because of Whitmore Enterprises.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I didn’t know.””

She looked at him.

“You should have.””

Daniel looked away.

The truth was painful because everyone had failed someone.

I looked through the documents.

There were copies of payments.

Names.

Dates.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Victor Hale.

I looked at Michael.

“Who is he?””

Michael’s expression became serious.

“He was a business partner of Richard Whitmore.””

Daniel frowned.

“Victor left years ago.””

Michael shook his head.

“No. He was removed.””

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered he was involved in unauthorized transfers.””

Patricia had been stealing.

Victor had been helping.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note was attached to one document.

If anything happens to me, check the Bennett account.

I stared.

“Bennett account?””

Michael searched through the box.

Then found another file.

My name was written on it.

I felt sick.

“Why does everything involve me?””

Michael opened it carefully.

Inside was a bank statement.

Not mine.

My mother’s.

The account had been created before I was born.

And the balance made me gasp.

“That can’t be real.””

Michael looked at the number.

“It is.””

Jessica leaned closer.

“How much?””

I couldn’t say it.

Michael did.

“Eight million dollars.””

The room went silent.

My mother had never lived like someone with millions.

She drove an old car.

She wore simple clothes.

She worked constantly.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Michael looked at the papers.

“Because this account was not for her.””

He turned the page.

“It was created for you.””

I felt tears fall.

My mother had hidden a fortune from me.

Not because she didn’t trust me.

Because she knew someone might take it.

Daniel looked broken.

“Patricia knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knew your mother had something.””

“How?””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Before we married, my mother asked questions.””

“About me?””

“About your inheritance.””

My stomach turned.

“She chose me because of money.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

And that hurt more than if he had lied.

A sound came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Michael turned off the light.

We listened.

A door opened.

Then footsteps.

Someone entered the house.

Daniel whispered,

“She’s here.””

I looked at him.

“Your mother?””

He nodded.

Michael grabbed the box.

“We need to leave.””

But before we moved, a voice echoed from downstairs.

Patricia.

“You always were easier to manipulate than I expected, Daniel.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because she wasn’t talking to us.

She was talking to him.

We moved toward the hallway.

Patricia stood at the bottom of the stairs.

And beside her was a man I had never seen before.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Daniel whispered his name.

“Victor.””

The man looked up.

And smiled.

“Hello, Sarah.””

I felt a chill.

May you like

Because he knew exactly who I was.

And he said my name like he had been waiting years to meet me.
