Chapter 2: The Secret They Hid
The courthouse steps went silent.
Not the normal kind of silence.
The kind that happens when everyone senses something important is about to happen.
Three black SUVs stood in front of the building.
Their windows were tinted.
Their engines still running.
Daniel stared at them like he had seen a ghost.
I had never seen that expression on his face before.
Not during our arguments.
Not when I discovered his affair.
Not even when I filed for divorce.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Jessica grabbed his arm.
“Daniel… who are they?””
He didn’t answer.
Patricia did.
“Sarah, you need to leave.””
I looked at her.
The woman who had spent years making me feel small was suddenly nervous.
“No,” I said quietly.
“I think I’ll stay.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“This doesn’t concern you.””
I almost laughed.
After nine years of marriage, he was still trying to decide what concerned me.
“You made sure I was involved when you destroyed my life,” I replied.
“So I think I’ll see how this ends.””
The first SUV door opened.
A tall man in a dark suit stepped out.
He looked around fifty.
Calm.
Professional.
Behind him came two more people carrying folders.
Not police.
Not lawyers from the courthouse.
Something else.
The man walked directly toward Daniel.
“Daniel Whitmore?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes?””
The man handed him an envelope.
“Mr. Whitmore, you have been served.””
Daniel looked at the envelope.
Then at Patricia.
“What is this?””
The man didn’t answer.
“You’ll want to read it before making any decisions.””
Daniel opened it.
At first, his expression was confused.
Then it changed.
The color drained from his face.
Jessica leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
Daniel quickly folded the papers.
“Nothing.””
The man looked at him.
“Your attorney will explain everything.””
Patricia stepped between them.
“This is ridiculous. Who are you?””
The man calmly handed her a card.
“My name is Michael Grant. I represent the Whitmore family estate.””
I frowned.
The Whitmore family estate?
Daniel’s father had passed away three years earlier.
But I knew nothing about an estate.
Because Daniel had never allowed me to be part of those conversations.
Patricia’s fingers tightened around the card.
“You have no right to come here.””
Michael looked at her.
“Actually, Mrs. Whitmore, we have every right.””
Daniel suddenly raised his voice.
“Mom, what did you do?””
Everyone looked at him.
Including me.
Because that was the first time I heard Daniel accuse Patricia of anything.
Patricia’s face hardened.
“Watch your mouth.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“You told me everything was handled.””
Handled?
That word caught my attention.
“What was handled?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
For a second, he looked like he wanted to say something.
Then he stopped.
Because Patricia shook her head slightly.
A silent warning.
I saw it.
And so did Michael.
“There are many things Mrs. Whitmore has failed to disclose,” Michael said.
Patricia’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Michael opened another folder.
“I believe Sarah Bennett deserves to know the truth about the money.””
My heart stopped.
Money?
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Michael ignored him.
“During your marriage, Mrs. Bennett contributed financially to Whitmore Enterprises through several personal investments.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked away.
I felt cold.
Because I suddenly remembered every time Daniel asked me to sign documents.
Every time he told me it was “just paperwork.””
Every time he said, “Trust me.””
Michael continued.
“She was told she was supporting her husband’s company. However, those documents were not what she believed them to be.””
Patricia interrupted.
“This is nonsense.””
Michael looked at her.
“Would you like me to continue here?””
Patricia went silent.
That frightened me more than anything.
Because Patricia never went silent.
Not once.
Daniel grabbed the papers from Michael.
“You don’t understand.””
Michael calmly replied.
“I understand perfectly.””
Then he looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, there is something else.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
He reached into the folder.
And pulled out a photograph.
A photograph of Daniel.
Patricia.
And another person I had never seen before.
Michael handed it to me.
“This was taken six months before your wedding.””
I looked at the picture.
Then my entire body went cold.
Because standing beside Daniel and Patricia…
was Jessica.
But Jessica looked younger.
And she wasn’t wearing an employee badge.
She was holding hands with Daniel.
I looked up slowly.
“No…”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sarah, let me explain.””
I looked at him.
“You knew her before we got married?””
His silence was the answer.
Behind him, Jessica whispered:
“Daniel…”
And for the first time, Patricia wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Jessica.
Like she was afraid Jessica might say something.
Michael closed the folder.
“Mrs. Bennett, there’s one more thing you should know.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked directly at Daniel.
“The divorce agreement you signed today may not be valid.””
Daniel’s face turned white.
May you like
And then Michael said the words that changed everything.
“Because someone forged your signature on a document nine years ago.””
