Chapter 7: The Woman Who Came for My Daughter
"Don't let her leave.""
Those were the first words out of my mouth.
The principal, Mrs. Collins, sounded frightened.
"Mr. Carter, she's already gone.""
I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.
"What do you mean she's gone?""
"She left about fifteen minutes ago. She said she had authorization to collect Maya for a scheduled appointment.""
"Who authorized it?""
"Your wife.""
"Did you call Vanessa?""
"She presented a signed document. It had your name on it too.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you let her take my daughter?""
There was another silence.
Then Mrs. Collins said, "No. Maya refused to leave with her.""
I almost dropped the phone.
"Where is Maya now?""
"She's in my office with the school counselor. She's safe.""
I exhaled for what felt like the first time in several minutes.
"Please don't let anyone take her until I arrive.""
"Of course.""
I hung up.
Laura was already collecting her documents.
"We're going to the school.""
Ethan stood beside the staircase.
"Is Maya okay?""
"She's safe," I told him.
He nodded, but his eyes remained fixed on the floor.
"Mom said this would happen.""
I turned toward him.
"What did she say?""
"She said one day someone would come and Maya would have to go with them. She told me not to interfere.""
Laura stopped moving.
"When did she say that?""
"Last Friday.""
I looked at the boy.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He shrugged.
"Because Mom said if I got involved, she'd send me to live with my dad.""
That sentence hit me harder than I expected.
Vanessa had been using the same threat against both children.
I turned toward the guest room.
"Where's your mother?""
Ethan pointed upstairs.
"She went into the bathroom.""
Laura stepped closer.
"Daniel, don't confront her. We need to focus on Maya.""
I nodded.
But before leaving, I walked to the bottom of the stairs.
"Vanessa!""
No answer.
"Vanessa, we need to talk.""
The bathroom door opened.
She appeared wearing a white blouse, her hair neatly brushed.
She looked almost amused.
"What's going on?""
"Someone tried to collect Maya from school.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"I know.""
I stared at her.
"You know?""
"Yes. I arranged an appointment.""
"You arranged for a stranger to collect my daughter without telling me?""
"She's not a stranger. She's a professional.""
Laura stepped forward.
"Mrs. Carter, please provide the name and credentials of the individual you authorized.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"I don't have to answer every question you ask.""
"No," Laura replied.
"But I would strongly advise you to preserve all communications and documents relating to this arrangement.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?""
Laura didn't respond.
I took one step toward my wife.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you would have made it difficult.""
"She's my daughter.""
"And she's been miserable!""
Vanessa raised her voice.
"She cries every night. She refuses to follow rules. She makes Lily feel uncomfortable in her own home. And now Ethan is constantly defending her!""
I stared at her.
"So your solution was to send her away?""
"My solution was to get her help.""
"By threatening her?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Children don't understand what's best for them.""
Then she picked up her handbag.
"I'm going out.""
Laura moved toward the hallway.
"Mrs. Carter, I would recommend that you remain available while we clarify the school incident.""
Vanessa looked at her watch.
"I have an appointment.""
"With whom?""
"That isn't your concern.""
She walked past us.
I didn't stop her.
Not because I wanted to let her go.
Because Laura was right.
Everything needed to be documented.
At the school, Maya was sitting in Mrs. Collins's office with a blanket around her shoulders.
The moment she saw me, she ran into my arms.
"Daddy!""
I held her tightly.
"You're okay, sweetheart.""
She buried her face against my chest.
"That lady came again.""
I pulled back slightly.
"What lady?""
"The one with the silver car.""
I looked at Mrs. Collins.
She nodded.
"She introduced herself as Ms. Harper.""
Laura immediately wrote down the name.
I crouched in front of Maya.
"What did she say?""
Maya rubbed her eyes.
"She said we were going somewhere nice.""
"Did she tell you where?""
"She said there would be a big bedroom and a garden.""
My chest tightened.
"Did you want to go?""
Maya shook her head.
"I asked if you were coming.""
"And what did she say?""
Maya's eyes filled.
"She said Daddy was busy and would come later.""
I held her hands.
"Did she say anything else?""
Maya hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"She said if I was a good girl, maybe I could come home for Christmas.""
Laura looked up sharply.
I felt my stomach turn.
Mrs. Collins handed us a printed copy of the collection authorization.
The document contained my name, my supposed signature, and a statement claiming I had approved Maya's temporary placement.
At the bottom was the name of the authorized collector.
*Harper Family Support Services.*
Laura photographed every page.
Then she asked Mrs. Collins whether the school had security footage.
"Yes," the principal replied.
"The entrance cameras recorded the entire incident.""
"Please preserve it.""
"Of course.""
Before leaving, I asked Maya whether she wanted to stay with Grandma for a few days.
She shook her head.
"I want to go home with you.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Then that's what we'll work toward.""
As we walked toward the parking lot, my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph.
Vanessa was standing outside a building with Ms. Harper.
Between them was a young woman holding a clipboard.
Underneath the photograph were seven words:
*Ask your wife who signed the placement contract.*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*Because it wasn't you.*
