Chapter 2: The Phone Nobody Was Supposed to Find

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Vanessa stood in the middle of the kitchen, breathing hard.

I held the phone against my chest.

Ethan had backed against the refrigerator. Maya was still in my arms, her small fingers gripping my shirt.

"What exactly has he done?"" I asked.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

"He's been secretly recording people in this house. That's a serious violation of privacy.""

Ethan shook his head.

"I only recorded what happened to Maya.""

"You recorded conversations that weren't yours to record.""

"Because nobody believed me!""

His voice cracked.

Vanessa pointed toward the staircase.

"Upstairs. Both of you.""

Neither child moved.

I placed Maya gently on a kitchen chair.

"Nobody is going upstairs until we understand what's happening.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Oh, wonderful. So now I'm the villain because I tried to teach your daughter some manners?""

I turned on the phone.

The battery showed three percent.

"What's the password?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then he said, "Maya's birthday.""

I entered the date.

The phone unlocked.

There were seventeen video files inside the folder.

Each had a date.

Some were several months old.

My hands began to feel cold.

"Why did you record these?""

Ethan stared at the floor.

"Because the first time I told you, Mom said I was lying.""

I looked up.

"When did you tell me?""

"Last Christmas.""

I remembered that evening.

Vanessa had told me Ethan was upset because he wanted a new gaming console. I had spoken to him briefly, and he'd said everything was fine.

Apparently, it wasn't.

I opened the first recording.

The video showed the kitchen.

The angle was low, almost hidden behind a stack of cereal boxes.

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

"Maya, I told you to sit down.""

A small voice answered.

"But I'm hungry.""

"Then you should have eaten when everyone else did.""

"I was waiting for Daddy.""

"Your father isn't here. He has work.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa said something that made me grip the counter.

"You don't get to make this house revolve around you.""

The video ended.

I looked at Maya.

She was staring at the screen.

"Is that you, sweetheart?""

She nodded.

I opened another recording.

This one showed the dining room.

Lily and Ethan were sitting at the table. Vanessa placed three plates in front of them.

Maya stood near the doorway.

"Can I have some?"" Maya asked.

Vanessa didn't even look at her.

"Not until you finish your chores.""

"But I did them.""

"You did them badly.""

Ethan's younger voice interrupted.

"Mom, I can give her some of mine.""

"No, Ethan. Eat your dinner.""

"But she's hungry.""

Vanessa placed the pizza box farther away.

"Don't start.""

The recording ended.

My jaw tightened.

"How long has this been happening?""

Ethan wiped his eyes.

"Since before summer.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is absurd. Those recordings are taken out of context.""

I turned toward her.

"Which part needs context? The part where my seven-year-old daughter asks for food?""

"Daniel, you don't understand the household dynamic. Maya has been struggling with boundaries since you started traveling.""

"She's seven, Vanessa.""

"And she's spoiled!""

The words exploded out of her.

Maya flinched.

I saw it.

Ethan saw it too.

He stepped between his mother and the little girl.

"Don't shout at her.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Move.""

"No.""

"Move, Ethan.""

He shook his head.

I had seen this woman handle difficult conversations, argue with delivery drivers, and complain about neighbors.

But this was different.

She wasn't trying to explain herself anymore.

She was trying to regain control.

I opened another video.

The recording showed the hallway.

Maya was sitting on the floor, crying.

Vanessa stood over her.

"Do you know why nobody wants to sit with you?""

Maya shook her head.

"Because you make everything difficult.""

"Can I call Daddy?""

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Your daddy is busy earning money. He doesn't need to hear every little problem you create.""

Then she walked away.

The recording continued for another forty seconds.

Maya sat alone.

Eventually, Ethan appeared.

He crouched beside her and handed her half a sandwich.

"Don't tell Mom," he whispered.

Maya nodded.

I paused the video.

My vision blurred.

I had spent years believing that I was building a stable family.

I had worked overtime. Taken extra assignments. Missed school events. Told myself the sacrifices were temporary because Vanessa was at home with the children.

I had trusted her.

And while I was sending money for groceries and school supplies, my daughter had been sitting on the floor begging for food.

"Daniel," Vanessa said, her voice suddenly softer.

I didn't look at her.

"Put the phone down. We can discuss this privately.""

"No.""

"You're upsetting the children.""

I finally turned.

"You did that.""

She pressed her lips together.

Then she changed tactics.

"Fine. I made mistakes. I admit that. But you have no idea how exhausting it is to manage three children while you're constantly away.""

I stared at her.

"You told me Maya was happy.""

"She is happy!""

"Then why is she afraid to look at you?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ethan quietly reached for the folded paper inside the drawer.

"There's something else.""

I took it from him.

It was a small handwritten list.

There were dates, followed by short descriptions.

June 4 — Maya locked out of dining room.

June 11 — Dinner withheld.

June 19 — Mom told Lily not to share.

July 2 — Maya cried after phone call with Dad.

At the bottom was a sentence written in uneven handwriting.

*I have to keep proof because Mom says nobody will believe a kid.*

I felt something break inside me.

"Did you write this?""

Ethan nodded.

"Some of it. I copied the dates from the videos.""

"Why didn't you tell me again?""

He looked at me with exhausted eyes.

"I tried.""

I remembered his strange message in August.

Dad, can I talk to you alone sometime?

I had replied that weekend was busy and promised to call.

I never did.

"Why didn't you tell Grandma?"" I asked.

"Mom said she'd make you divorce her, and then we'd all be separated.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's enough. He doesn't understand what he's saying.""

Ethan's voice became very quiet.

"There's one video you need to watch.""

He pointed at the last file.

It was dated three weeks earlier.

The thumbnail showed Vanessa standing in the living room, holding a large envelope.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only the sound of footsteps.

Then Vanessa's voice.

"Once Daniel signs the papers, everything will be different.""

Another woman answered.

"Are you sure he'll sign?""

Vanessa laughed.

"He trusts me. He won't question anything.""

The other woman asked something I couldn't quite hear.

Vanessa leaned closer to the camera.

And then she said:

"Especially if he thinks Maya is the problem.""

I stopped breathing.

The video continued.

A second voice asked, "And what about the money?""

Vanessa smiled.

"That's already taken care of.""

I looked at her.

"What papers?""

She stared at the phone.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.

Then the front door opened.

A woman's voice called from the entrance.

"Vanessa? I brought the documents you asked for.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Ethan whispered:

"That's Aunt Rachel.""

I turned toward the hallway.

May you like

Rachel was Vanessa's older sister.

And she was holding the exact same envelope I'd just seen on the phone.
