Chapter 13: The Night My Wife Tried to Disappear With My Daughter

I called Vanessa immediately.

She didn't answer.

I called again.

Straight to voicemail.

Then I sent a message.

*Where is Maya?*

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Then my phone rang.

It was Ethan.

"Dad?""

His voice was trembling.

"Where are you, buddy?""

"Upstairs.""

"Where's Maya?""

"She's with me.""

I closed my eyes.

"Good. Stay with her. Don't open the door for anyone.""

There was a pause.

Then Ethan whispered, "Dad, Mom is packing.""

My stomach tightened.

"Packing what?""

"Suitcases. There's a man outside.""

I looked at Laura.

She was already collecting her documents.

"Can you see the man?""

"He's standing beside a black car.""

"Do you know him?""

"No.""

Then Ethan said something that made my blood run cold.

"Mom told him to wait until you left.""

I immediately put the call on speaker.

Laura listened.

"Ethan, I need you to do something. Stay with Maya in a room where you can lock the door. Don't confront anyone. Can you do that?""

"Yes.""

"Good. We're coming.""

I drove home with Laura following behind me.

The entire journey, I kept thinking about the photograph.

Maya's clothes packed into suitcases.

Her bed stripped.

Her little pink blanket missing.

I had seen that blanket beside her every night since her mother died.

Vanessa knew that.

She knew Maya couldn't sleep without it.

And she'd packed it anyway.

When I reached the house, a black SUV was parked outside.

A man in a dark jacket stood beside the driver's door.

He was holding a clipboard.

I recognized him immediately.

Robert Cole.

He looked up as I approached.

"Mr. Carter.""

I didn't slow down.

"Move away from my house.""

He stepped forward.

"Let's keep this civil.""

"Why are you here?""

"I'm assisting with a scheduled family transition.""

"There is no scheduled transition.""

He held up a document.

"Your wife has authorized—"

"My wife doesn't have my permission.""

Laura arrived behind me.

"Mr. Cole, I'm Laura Bennett, legal counsel for Daniel Carter. Please provide the legal authority under which you are attempting to collect this child.""

Robert glanced at her.

"That's not necessary.""

"It absolutely is.""

He lowered the document.

"Mrs. Carter has arranged the necessary paperwork.""

"Then you won't mind waiting while its validity is checked.""

Robert looked toward the house.

Vanessa appeared at the front door.

She was wearing a beige coat.

Behind her stood Ethan.

And beside him was Maya.

My little girl was holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy!""

She ran toward me.

I dropped to my knees and caught her.

"Sweetheart!""

She wrapped both arms around my neck.

"Are we going somewhere?""

"No, baby.""

I kissed her hair.

"You're staying with me.""

Vanessa stepped outside.

"Daniel, you're making a scene.""

I stood, keeping Maya close.

"You packed her belongings.""

"She needs to be prepared.""

"For what?""

Vanessa looked at Robert.

Then back at me.

"Don't do this in front of the children.""

"You've spent months making decisions about them without me. We're done pretending everything is normal.""

Robert cleared his throat.

"Mr. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this inside.""

Laura stepped between us.

"No. First, I want to see the document you're relying on.""

He handed it to her.

She examined it.

Then she looked up.

"This appears to be a private authorization form, not a court order.""

Robert's expression tightened.

"It was prepared by our legal department.""

"That doesn't give you authority to remove a child.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Daniel agreed to this.""

I stared at her.

"Show me where.""

She didn't answer.

"Show me my signature.""

She looked away.

Laura handed the document back.

"Mr. Cole, I strongly recommend that you leave the property and direct any further communication through counsel.""

Robert hesitated.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Mrs. Carter, you told me this was finalized.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Just get in the car.""

He shook his head.

"Not until I understand what's happening.""

I watched him carefully.

For the first time, he seemed uncertain.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"Robert, now.""

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

Ethan stepped forward.

"Why are you taking my sister?""

Robert looked at him.

"I'm not taking anyone.""

"Then why did Mom tell you to bring the car?""

Vanessa spun around.

"Ethan, go inside!""

"No!""

His voice echoed across the driveway.

"You said Maya would be gone before Dad got home!""

Maya buried her face against my chest.

I felt her trembling.

Laura immediately called the appropriate authorities to report the attempted removal and request assistance in ensuring the child remained safe.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Then she started crying.

Not quietly.

Not like someone who had been caught making a mistake.

She cried loudly, covering her face with both hands.

"Look what you've done, Daniel!""

I stared at her.

"You packed our daughter's clothes.""

"I was trying to help her!""

"Then why did you tell Robert to wait until I left?""

She looked at the ground.

Robert returned to his vehicle.

Before getting inside, he turned toward Laura.

"I'll cooperate with any inquiry.""

Then he drove away.

Vanessa watched him leave.

When she turned back, her tears had stopped.

Her expression was cold.

"You think you've won?""

I didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you've just done to this family.""

I looked at Ethan.

He was standing beside the door, crying.

Then I looked at Maya.

She was clutching my shirt.

I knew exactly what mattered.

I carried Maya inside.

Laura stayed with us while the incident was documented.

We photographed the suitcases, the packed bedroom, and the documents left on the kitchen counter.

Inside one suitcase, I found Maya's clothes, her shoes, her toothbrush, and a small photograph of her mother.

Vanessa had even packed the framed picture from her bedside table.

I picked it up.

Emily was smiling in the photograph.

Maya had been sitting on her lap.

I held it for a long time.

Then Ethan appeared.

"Can I talk to you?""

I placed the photograph down.

"Of course.""

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Mom told me something else.""

"What?""

"She said if Maya went to the Whitmores, everything would be easier.""

"For whom?""

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know.""

He reached into his pocket and handed me another folded piece of paper.

It was a handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Vanessa.

**Friday. 8:00 a.m. Final transfer.

Bring original documents. No delays.**

I stared at the note.

Then I noticed something written underneath.

A second name.

*MW-16.*

I looked at Ethan.

"Where did you find this?""

"In Mom's handbag.""

I unfolded the paper completely.

At the bottom was an address.

Not the Whitmores' home.

Not Harper's office.

A private residential property nearly two hours away.

And beside the address were three words.

*Previous placement location.*

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Your daughter isn't the first child they've tried this with. Ask what happened to MW-16.*

I looked at Laura.

She read the message.

May you like

Then she said quietly:

"Daniel, I think we need to find that child.""
