Chapter 6: The Woman Vanessa Had Been Paying
Laura arrived at our house shortly after ten the next morning.
She brought an assistant and a document scanner.
I handed her the USB drive.
She didn't open the files immediately.
Instead, she asked Ethan to explain how he'd obtained it.
He told her about the laptop, the folder, and the recordings.
Laura listened carefully.
"Ethan, I need you to understand something. You're not in trouble for telling an adult that you're worried about someone. But we must be careful about how this information is handled.""
He nodded.
"Can I still tell you what I heard?""
"Absolutely.""
He took a breath.
"Mom said a woman was coming to take Maya away.""
Laura glanced at me.
"Did you hear a name?""
Ethan shook his head.
"Mom called her Miss Harper.""
Laura wrote it down.
"Do you know when this happened?""
"Did you see this woman?""
Ethan nodded.
"Once.""
"Where?""
"Outside our house. She was sitting in a silver car.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Did she speak to Maya?""
"No. She talked to Mom.""
Laura looked at me.
"We need to verify who this person is before drawing conclusions.""
She then asked Ethan to describe the conversation as accurately as he could remember.
He closed his eyes.
"Mom said, 'Daniel won't fight it once the papers are accepted.'' Then the woman said something about keeping Maya comfortable until everything was finalized.""
Laura stopped writing.
"Those were her words?""
"Yes.""
"And what did your mother say?""
Ethan looked down.
"She said, 'Just make sure she doesn't contact her father.''"
The room went silent.
I stood up.
"Who is this woman?""
Laura raised one hand.
"Daniel, sit down. We need facts, not assumptions.""
I sat.
She connected the USB to her laptop and examined the folder names.
There were several subfolders.
School.
House.
Dinner.
Placement.
And one called Payments.
Laura opened the last folder.
It contained photographs of bank transfers, scanned receipts, and a spreadsheet.
My name appeared in several entries.
So did Vanessa's.
The first payment was dated four months earlier.
The recipient was listed as:
*Harper Family Support Services.*
Amount: $1,500.
Another payment followed two weeks later.
Then another.
And another.
There were seven payments in total.
The combined amount was over ten thousand dollars.
I stared at the screen.
"What is this?""
Laura examined the entries.
"We need to verify the recipient and purpose. These documents alone don't establish what the payments were for.""
I nodded.
Then I noticed something.
The money had come from our joint savings account.
The account I'd been putting money into for Maya's future education.
I leaned closer.
"That account was supposed to be untouched.""
Laura checked the dates.
"Do you recognize these withdrawals?""
"No.""
She turned to me.
"Did Vanessa have access?""
"Yes. We both did.""
I felt nauseated.
For years, I'd told Vanessa that the savings account was for Maya's college education.
We had agreed not to use it for ordinary household expenses.
Now more than ten thousand dollars had disappeared.
Laura photographed the screen.
"Don't contact the recipient yourself. We'll need proper documentation.""
At that moment, the kitchen door opened.
Vanessa walked in wearing a long gray cardigan.
She stopped when she saw Laura's laptop.
"What are you doing?""
Laura closed the folder.
"I'm reviewing documents relevant to the pending matter.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You gave her the USB?""
"Yes.""
She laughed.
"That's private property.""
Laura spoke calmly.
"Mrs. Carter, I'm not going to argue about the ownership of a storage device. If you have concerns, please raise them through the appropriate legal channels.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Daniel, can we speak alone?""
"No.""
She looked at Laura.
"You're filling his head with nonsense.""
Laura stood.
"Mrs. Carter, I recommend that you direct any communication about the pending proceedings through your legal representative.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
Then she turned toward me.
"You really want to destroy this family over a few misunderstandings?""
I looked at her.
"You took money from Maya's education account.""
Her expression flickered.
"It's not what you think.""
"Then explain it.""
She folded her arms.
"I was paying for professional support.""
"For whom?""
"For Maya.""
"Why?""
"Because she needed help.""
I stared at her.
"What kind of help costs ten thousand dollars?""
Vanessa glanced at the laptop.
Then she said quietly:
"Ask your daughter why she behaves the way she does.""
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.
"Don't you dare put this on her.""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"She isn't innocent, Daniel.""
Laura stepped between us.
"That's enough for today.""
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
She placed it on the table.
"Since everyone wants the truth, perhaps you should read this.""
I unfolded it.
It was a printed assessment.
The heading read:
*Child Behavioral and Emotional Adjustment Report.*
Maya's full name appeared at the top.
There was a date, a professional-looking letterhead, and a signature.
The report described Maya as emotionally disruptive, manipulative, and increasingly resistant to household authority.
At the bottom was a recommendation.
The child may benefit from temporary placement in a structured residential care environment away from current household stressors.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You had her assessed?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes.""
"Without telling me?""
"You were unavailable.""
Laura took the paper from my hand.
"Who conducted this assessment?""
Vanessa gave her a name.
Laura studied it.
Then she looked up.
"Do you have the original?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is a copy.""
Laura examined the letterhead.
"Was Maya interviewed?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"At a private office.""
"Did you attend?""
"Of course.""
Laura looked at the signature again.
"Mrs. Carter, I'm going to need the full contact details of the professional who prepared this report.""
Vanessa gave a dismissive shrug.
"You can have them.""
Then she picked up her handbag and walked out.
Ethan appeared at the staircase.
He had heard everything.
"Can I tell you something?"" he asked.
I turned.
"Of course.""
He came downstairs and looked at the report.
"That's not where Mom took Maya.""
My heart began pounding.
"What do you mean?""
Ethan pointed to the name printed at the top.
"Mom took her to the woman in the silver car.""
Laura slowly put down her pen.
"Are you certain?""
Ethan nodded.
"She said it was just a little meeting. But the woman asked Maya if she wanted to live somewhere else.""
I looked at my stepson.
"What did Maya say?""
Ethan's eyes filled.
"She said she wanted her daddy.""
He swallowed hard.
"Then the woman told her that if she kept saying that, she might not get to see him again.""
Laura's expression hardened.
"Daniel, we need to establish the identity and credentials of this person immediately.""
I looked at the report again.
The name at the top was unfamiliar.
But the signature at the bottom was unmistakable.
It belonged to someone I had met before.
Someone who had attended Vanessa's birthday dinner just six months earlier.
Someone Vanessa had introduced as an old family friend.
I picked up my phone and searched the name.
A professional profile appeared.
And beneath the photograph was a title that made my hands go cold.
*Child Placement Consultant.*
I turned the screen toward Laura.
She stared at it.
Then she said something I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Daniel, I don't think we're dealing with a simple custody dispute anymore.""
I looked at the staircase, where Maya was standing quietly.
And then my phone rang.
It was Maya's school.
The principal spoke before I could even introduce myself.
"Mr. Carter, I'm calling because a woman came to collect your daughter this morning.""
My blood turned cold.
"What woman?""
There was a pause.
"She presented paperwork authorizing her to take Maya.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did you release my daughter?""
The principal hesitated.
"Mr. Carter... she said your wife had already approved it.""
I looked toward Vanessa's empty chair.
Then the principal added:
"But there's something else. The woman showed us a document with your signature on it.""
May you like
And I knew the next three days were going to determine whether I could protect my daughter before Vanessa's plan went any further.
