Chapter 10: The Family Vanessa Had Already Chosen

"Rebecca, tell me who they are.""

My sister-in-law was crying now.

I could hear her trying to steady her breathing.

"Daniel, promise me you won't confront them until you speak to your lawyer.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Vanessa wanted Maya to live with the Whitmores.""

I frowned.

"The Whitmores?""

"Greg and Patricia Whitmore.""

I knew the names.

Everyone in our neighborhood did.

Greg owned a chain of private medical clinics. Patricia ran a charitable foundation that supported children's education and family services. They lived in a large house on the other side of town.

I'd met them several times.

Greg had attended a business dinner with me the previous spring. Patricia had visited our house for Vanessa's birthday.

They had even brought Maya a doll.

I remembered Patricia bending down to speak to my daughter.

"You're such a sweet little girl," she'd said.

Maya had smiled politely.

I had thought nothing of it.

"Why would Vanessa send Maya to them?""

Rebecca sighed.

"She told me they couldn't have children of their own. She said they had been looking for a child to raise.""

My stomach tightened.

"Are you saying they wanted to adopt Maya?""

"That's what Vanessa implied.""

"Did they know I hadn't agreed?""

"I don't know.""

I walked toward the window.

Outside, Ethan was helping Maya water the plants.

She was laughing at something he had said.

The sight made my chest ache.

"Rebecca, did you sign anything?""

"No. Absolutely not.""

"Did you speak to the Whitmores?""

"Once. Patricia called me.""

"What did she say?""

Rebecca was quiet for a moment.

"She asked whether Maya had always been difficult.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What?""

"She said Vanessa had described her as emotionally disturbed and difficult to manage. She wanted to know whether that behavior came from your late wife.""

I gripped the windowsill.

"She blamed Maya's mother?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel, I told her that Maya was a normal little girl who had experienced a terrible loss. Patricia said she understood, but that they had the resources to give her a more stable environment.""

I felt sick.

"Did she say anything about me?""

"She said Vanessa had explained that you were overwhelmed and willing to consider a temporary arrangement.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

Vanessa had been using my exhaustion as a weapon.

Every late shift.

Every missed school event.

Every time I'd admitted I needed help.

She had turned them into evidence that I was an unfit father.

"Rebecca, can you send me everything she sent you?""

"Yes.""

"And don't delete anything.""

"I won't.""

Before ending the call, Rebecca said something else.

"There's something I didn't tell you.""

I waited.

"Patricia asked whether Maya had any valuable inheritance.""

I went still.

"What inheritance?""

"Your late wife's parents established a trust for Maya after she was born. I don't know the exact amount, but it was substantial.""

I remembered the trust.

My late wife, Emily, had insisted that her parents create it.

It was meant to provide for Maya's education, medical needs, and future security.

I had never considered it something anyone would try to exploit.

"Who controls it?""

"Your father-in-law is the trustee, isn't he?""

"Yes.""

"Then you should call him.""

I ended the conversation and immediately dialed my father-in-law, Thomas.

He answered after two rings.

"Daniel?""

"Thomas, I need to ask you something about Maya's trust.""

His voice changed.

"What happened?""

I explained the situation.

When I mentioned Vanessa and the Whitmores, he became very quiet.

Finally, he said:

"I was afraid this might happen.""

My heart began pounding.

"What do you mean?""

"Vanessa contacted me six weeks ago.""

I gripped the phone.

"What did she want?""

"She asked whether the trust could be transferred to a different guardian.""

"Why?""

"She said you were struggling financially and emotionally. She suggested that Maya might be better off under someone else's care.""

I stared at the wall.

"Did you agree?""

"Of course not.""

"Did she mention the Whitmores?""

"Yes.""

I felt cold.

Thomas continued.

"She said they were willing to provide Maya with a permanent home.""

I struggled to find my voice.

"Did you tell her no?""

"Immediately.""

"Then what happened?""

"She asked for copies of the trust documents. I refused.""

I sat down.

"Thomas, why didn't you tell me?""

He sighed.

"Because she told me you were aware of the discussions. She said you were considering it but didn't want to upset Maya.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"She told everyone a different version.""

"Daniel, there's something else.""

I waited.

"Two weeks ago, someone requested information about the trust through a legal representative. They claimed to be acting on behalf of Maya's future guardian.""

"Who?""

"I don't know. The request came from a law office.""

He paused.

"But I kept the letter.""

I asked him to send it immediately.

A few minutes later, an email arrived.

The letterhead belonged to a firm called Whitmore, Hayes and Associates.

The letter requested financial information about Maya's trust and asked whether the trustee would consider releasing funds for an alternative care arrangement.

I forwarded it to Laura.

Then I heard a small voice behind me.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

Maya was standing in the doorway.

She held her favorite stuffed rabbit.

"Can I ask something?""

I knelt.

"Of course.""

"Do the Whitmores want me?""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Why do you ask?""

She looked down.

"Vanessa said Patricia had a big bedroom for me.""

I stared at her.

"When did she say that?""

"Yesterday.""

I gently took her hand.

"Did she tell you that you had to go?""

Maya nodded.

"She said it would be better for everyone.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"Listen to me. You are not a problem that needs to be moved somewhere else.""

Maya started crying.

"I don't want a different family.""

I held her tightly.

"You already have a family. And nobody gets to make you feel unwanted.""

From the hallway, Ethan appeared.

He had heard us.

"Can I tell you something, Dad?""

I looked up.

"Yes.""

He held out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in Mom's desk.""

I opened it.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Patricia Whitmore.

The subject line read:

*Final Arrangements for Maya.*

The email contained only three sentences.

We are ready to proceed as soon as the father signs.

The child must be prepared emotionally before the transition.

Please confirm that the financial trust will be accessible after placement.

At the bottom was Vanessa's reply.

*He won't be a problem once he understands he has no choice.*

I read that sentence twice.

Then my phone rang.

Laura.

"Daniel, I've reviewed the material Rebecca sent.""

"What did you find?""

Her voice was serious.

"I think we need to move quickly. I've discovered that a document was submitted to the court this afternoon.""

"What document?""

"A proposed temporary guardianship order.""

I looked at Maya.

"Who is listed as the proposed guardian?""

May you like

Laura paused.

"Patricia Whitmore.""
